Posted January 24, 200619 yr Hi there, Cheeky has recently started to do really runny poops. They still have the greenish bit and the white solid bit but loads of watery stuff too. He seems happy enough - doesn't appear ill but he is drinking a lot more water i think. Does anyone know if this is normal or not? Thanks ali
January 24, 200619 yr I only an avian vet can determine if he is sick or not. Has he had a diet change? Did you introduce a new veggie or fruit recently? I am sure that someone with more expertise will come along, but you may want to take him in for a vet check to ensure he is okay.
January 24, 200619 yr Changes in the droppings are often one of the first signs of illness. Stress or bathing can cause runny poops as well as foods that are high in water content (such as iceberg lettuce or celery). Unless you can attribute the runny poops to one of those causes, you should have the budgie checked out by an avian vet. How long has this been been happening?
January 24, 200619 yr Author We have been trying to give him more fruit and vegetables because before I joined this site I was just giving him seed. He has had quite a few baths too - seems to be loving water just now!
January 24, 200619 yr Fruits and vegetables don't normally cause this, just the ones that are high in water content. You would only notice it soon after the budgie has eaten them. Same with the baths. The droppings will only be watery for a brief period of time immediately after the budgie has had a bath. It quickly clears up and goes back to normal. How long have his droppings been runny?
January 24, 200619 yr Author a few days now. he doesn't seem sick though - he's still running about and being as cheeky as ever. I'll stop the baths and the fruit and see how he gets on. thanks
January 24, 200619 yr Actually, you really should have him seen by the avian vet. Baths and fruit aren't likely to cause this for such a long time. Definitely not the baths at least. And unless he's eating a LOT of fruit it shouldn't cause this for such a long time. It would be a little more likely if he were eating celery or lettuce but still, three days is a long time for any symptom to go on for a budgie. The best thing to do is to have him seen as soon as possible. This is why we watch the droppings so closely, they can be the first sign. By the time he DOES begin to act sick, he might be too far gone to help. You'd be surprised how fast these little birds crash. I've seen it myself and it's a horrible thing to witness. Playing one miniute and struggling for life the next. I wish I were exaggerating.
January 24, 200619 yr I know Cheeky is a good age isnt he about 7 if I remember? Maybe the sudden change in diet after all that time had made his poops a bit off and maybe the if he is drinking the bathing water is causing the extra water. I know this is a bit gross but is there any chance of getting a picture of the poops. I had trouble with one of mine and poops and just wondered if it was anything similar.
January 24, 200619 yr Author okay i'll definately take him to the vet then-don't want anything to happen to him. Yeah he's about 7 and a half we think boomberry. I'll try and get a photo - shouldn't be too hard - he likes to do it on me all the time!! what was wrong with your birds?? thanks for the help guys
January 24, 200619 yr I would take him to be on the safe side. It came out that nothing was wrong with my bird and his poops still arent completely normal but I keep a close eye on them at all times like you should with Cheeky. Is the colour of them normal and do they form the normal shape with added water around thats what mine was like - my birds not mine obviously hehe!

Yeah i guessed you meant the birds!!!! Yeah they look normal only they are a bit wetter. They were really wet yesterday but they seem to have dried up a wee bit. leave a nice wet patch on your jumper I tried to get a picture but my camera isn't good enough - it just looked fuzzy. I'll take him to the vet and see what he says. Thanks again!!
January 25, 200619 yr Author Hiya, Cheeky is great thanks. His poops are looking a lot better today. I'm going to keep a close eye on him today and if they start going runny again then i'm going to take him to the vet on fri. Do you think that should be okay or do you think I should take him anyway? feel a bit of a fraud though when he's running about and chattering away!! Thanks for the help and concern - we really appreciate it :budgiedance:
January 25, 200619 yr Well as long as you keep a really close eye on his poops as its the first sign of illness and especially with Cheekys age too, any slight change and please take him. Glad they seem better though.
January 25, 200619 yr Cheeky should be okay. Our Star is almost 7 and sometimes heshe has running droppings if eating veg/fruit or taking baths. Just monitor it and if it continues for several days then check with an Avian vet.
January 26, 200619 yr Author Hiya just a quick update on Cheeky. He is back to normal today Hooray!!! Don't know what was wrong with him but he's fine now-will keep a very close eye on him though. Just wanted to thank everyone for their help. thanks again Cheeky
