Posted January 5, 200619 yr Ive a problem with my girl and I dont know what it is. On Saturday she came out as usual and crash landed to the floor, unable to do any more than a little flutter and was quite out of breath. She is usually a strong flyer. Anyway she has been fairly quiet since although still eating, drinking and pooping fine. One day since she flew okay but last night she was crash landing again. She hasnt lost a single flight and isnt molting. I first thought a respiratory problem so Ive kept her warm and half covered since the weekend. But she is now scratting at her bottom, a problem she had a while back. I picked her up to check her over and she felt quite hard on her tummy, not a lump just more solid than usual. Can anyone help me as to what might be the matter.
January 5, 200619 yr I would say a quick trip to the vet is in order. Still learning about bird health, I know just normally a hard stomach is not good. Egg bound, built of gas in the stomach, an infection? I am sure the experts will step in here, I hope she is okay. Keep us updated.
January 5, 200619 yr Oh Booms, sounds a little strange. Are you able to contact an Avian Vet, there's a few listed in the topic started by etteri.
January 6, 200619 yr Author Well Im sure she still isnt right but last night she was able to fly somewhat better and even jumped on Charlies (tiel) back which is her favourite thing to do and this morning she was ack ack acking at the top of her voice as usual. Her poops are still fine, and her appetite but I still think her breathing seems a little fast. Ive found a new avian vet that I can take her to beginning of next week if nothing improves further.
January 6, 200619 yr Booms does she seem fine on her perch, is she a bit wobberly on her feet. Have her checked for a tummor or a small stroke. Hope every thing is okay.
January 6, 200619 yr Author She is fine on her perch Daz Ive been watching closely not at att wobbly. Her tum feels a bit solid but there is definitely no lump and her co-ordination seems fine. Its a total mystery.
January 6, 200619 yr Hi - I hope Tobi is okay. Why would a lump effect her flying, is it a balance thing?
January 6, 200619 yr If nothing has improved over all this time, I would take her immediately. I know first-hand how a budgie can go from "not too bad" to dying on the cage floor.
January 6, 200619 yr Author Yeah I know Terri, but its weird one minute she is fine and the next day she is not flying again. I intend to take her to the vets next week, he only works Tuesdays and Wednesdays and isnt my usual vet. I arent putting off taking her. Like with anything I try first hand to distinguish the problem without having to stress her out more than I have to, but she has stumped me good and proper this time.
January 6, 200619 yr Trying to figure it out yourself never really helps since we can't do the necessary testing and such on our own and their symptoms are never clear-cut. And I'm saying this as someone who has done that very same thing and lost a bird partly because of it. I would treat it as an emergency and just have her seen by your regular vet (who is avian too or am I not remembering right? I have a horrible memory). I wouldn't wait to see a new vet, it may be too late by then. The faster your vet figures this out, the faster she'll be treated. Remember, they try to hide illness. My Pixie tried to hide her's right up until the point where she died. One moment she seemed to be perfectly fine, the next she was flapping around the cage bottom. It was the night before her vet appointment and it was the most horrible feeling in the world. I'd just hate for you to have to go through something like that.
January 6, 200619 yr Author Yeah I fully understand that and the thing is the normal/avian vet left the practice the day after Barnslee got the all clear and Ive only just found me a new vet which is quite far out and he only works 2 days a week. She will be see but I can get her there until Tuesday. I could ring and say its an emergency but at the moment its not and I think the vet would be pretty pee'd off being called out on a weekend. Believe me if it gets to this stage I will ring but Im taking her Tuesday. She hasnt deteriorated any so far today. Ive just rang home and apart from someone kids setting fire to my electric box on part of my house she is doing fine.
January 6, 200619 yr Why dont you give your vet a ring - if you can get in touch with the avian one - and see what they think? At least you might have more peace of mind over the weekend.
January 6, 200619 yr Author Thats what Im saying my old vet left the practice and the city and none of the other vets no anything about birds. Ive had Boomhubby ring me though and a friend of his is coming over tonight who breeds champion show budgies and has done for 30 years. He might if anything be able to have a little look at her.
January 6, 200619 yr Author Oh sorry mixed up what you meant hehe. Thanks very much I will keep you posted on any changes. She is a tough little cookie my Tobi girl. I will know when she is better she will lunge at the cage bars when I walk past to try attack me hehe.
January 6, 200619 yr good luck booms, i know you will do all you can for tobi. isnt it just sods law though that your vet went out of town. i would keep her warm incase it is an infection in her crop or something. Edited January 6, 200619 yr by pixie25
January 7, 200619 yr Hope Tobi's okay Booms, could see be eggbound or something if she's got a slightly hard tummy?
