Posted November 14, 200519 yr does anyone know if i can put a tame baby budgie in a cage with a tame cockatieal? will the budgie be there in the morning?
November 14, 200519 yr From what I have read and understand, no they have their own cages, if they have time out you can watch them and many here on this forum have tiels and budges that get along great. I am sure there will be some that will say we keep ours together so, it could be debated. The size of the cage would also make the difference if you planned on it. I know you will here even more advice...
November 14, 200519 yr Yes Lovey is one of our clever clogs. On rare occassions tiels and budgies will get along in the same cage. Believe it or not, the budgie is more likely to attack and torment the tiel. I really wouldn't recommend it, but certainly supervised flying time together is great, and you will find they will become great friends
November 14, 200519 yr Yes Lovey is one of our clever clogs. Well now thank you Lin, but you have to give yourself credit for sure, I learn most of this from you and the other members here . I know more about budgies then I do my kids now
November 14, 200519 yr One of my budgies Tobi is totally smitten with 2 of my tiels, the other one is only into humans. The tiels arent so fond of her they make growling noises and try to bite her I NEVER leave them all out unsupervised although I dont think they would eat her she could get hurt. Please never house them together although playtime supervised can be great fun for them. Ask my Tobi she sits on their cage waiting for them to come out even when her boyfriend Max is out, he gets dumped when its tiel time hehe!
November 17, 200519 yr huh well i know a case of a cockatiel and a budgie getting along a bit too well but they didn't share the same cage of course...
November 18, 200519 yr I know somebody who had a finch and cockatiel together for years and when the finch died, the cockatiel was lonely so she put in a budgie. Also know that some budgies can be housed with cockatiels as have been @ the avian rescue where I adopted a couple of my birds. I guess it depends on the the birds but they should be closely supervised. One thing I do know for sure, NEVER put a lovebird in with any other species, the other species will come out second, sometimes they don't even like to share a cage with their own kind, kinda wonder why they call them lovebirds .
November 18, 200519 yr I have an avairy, so it may be different, but I started off with a couple of budgies and a pair of cockatiels. The budgies are much bossier that it true, but I always found that the budgies would fight amongst themselves and not with the cockatiels. Cockatiels are much more gentle natured birds and I have never experienced fighting either between my teils or with them fighting with budgies in almost 16 yrs of having them together. I now have 4 cockatiels and about 36+ budgies. There is one story of my first tiels, they were bought as a breeding pair, but never seemed to get on that well, they couldn't be separated, but neither would they pair off together. But I did have one disabled budgie that had damaged it's wing as a hatchling and was never able to fly. (I adapted the avairy with mesh ladders everywhere so it could get everywhere even to the outside flight). These 2 tiels seemed besotted with it had would both try to win it's favour so they could sit next to it and look after it. They spent the next 11yrs like this until the budgie died. There was never any fighting and the budgie really seemed to enjoy the attention. The cockatiels would even try to swoop on me when I went in the avairy in a bid to protect the budgie from me! So, in conclusion, I would be careful of such a mix, but it can work
