Posted November 9, 200519 yr I swear my birds think I am bonkers. I made a batch of "Cream of Tweet", in my latest battle to get these budgies to eat something other than seed and the occasional nibble on wheat grass. The container says to put a layer of it over their normal food in their normal dish. So I did. Sunshine hopped over to the food dish as usual when I change it. He thinks seeds are the best if they are fresh out of the seed bucket, (Laughing out loud)! He perched on the edge of the dish, looked down (you know how they turn their heads so one eye is looking down at something they are trying to figure out) then hopped back to the perch and looked at me, also one-eyed. I swear he was asking me if I was daft. They have been back and forth to the dish several times and had some nibbles, so I guess it is incouraging. But I just know all that twittering coming from their cage goes something like this: Sunshine: Good grief, now what is she trying to feed us? Mae: Food? there's food, let me see! Sunshine: Well, not exactly.... Mae: Oh. What *IS* it??? Sunshine (after having a nibble): it isn't seed. Mae (after hopping back to the perch): Oh, maybe she will put some seed in if we ignore it. Sunshine: Yeah *nibble* Mae: Hey, I wanna try some *flys back to the dish* Sunshine: Knock yourself out, if you die, I'll know not to eat anymore *flys to the perch* Mae, sits and looks puzzled, eyes the food, eyes Sunshine, eyes the food, flys back to the perch. Birds, gotta love them. Edited November 9, 200519 yr by RishaMoonshadow
November 9, 200519 yr That was hysterical. "...if you die, I'll know not to eat anymore..." - that is so funny! I can just see the expression on Sunshine's face, LOL. Hopefully your birds will start to like it. Mine love the stuff. I used to put it on a plate and sprinkle millet on the top instead, I made a big production out of it and made sure they watched since they all know what millet is... At first they would just eat the millet off, but then somebudgie got brave and tried the Beak Appetit. They get it every morning for breakfast now, sans seeds. :fear
November 9, 200519 yr The funniest part is when Mae looks around and makes the feathers on top of her head stand up (I thought only 'teils did that).... I call it her "what the?" look.
November 9, 200519 yr Ive got the budgie versions now and they have been given it for the first time today I cant wait to get home to see if they have touched it. Although I arent holding out much hope!
November 9, 200519 yr (Laughing out loud) at least there nibbling it. I have a new plan... Taken there treat dish out at weekend. Now when the new batch of beak appitite cools - put in treat dish and put dish in cage. Hopefully they'll think "yummies" and start eating before they realise it's differant.
November 9, 200519 yr Day 2... Took the seed dish out last night when I went to bed. Frick and Frack (my latest nicknames for Sunshine and Mae) usually pig out in the morning so I thought I would be clever and serve them some of the Cream of Tweet when I got up. So again, a layer of seeds and then a layer of the new stuff... popped in the dish.... Nothing. Not even going to go look at it today it appears. Well, okay, I can play this game. (I have new treat sticks for them and it is killing me not to give them one, but I will be strong.... budgies must eat their grains and veggies..... budgies must eat their grains and veggies..... *crinkling sound of treats being unwrapped* budgies must....) okay, I might need an intervention here. Frick and Frack meanwhile are eyeing some seeds that spilled in the cage and fell through the grate and are out of reach to them.... nutty birds. :rip:
November 9, 200519 yr OMG does that sound so familar here (Laughing out loud). Keep me updated, we need seed intervention here too... I added seeds and veggies cut up really small together, and he looked at me like you expect me to eat that :rip:: He is like my kids, I don't want salad, I don't want my veggies..candy all the time
November 9, 200519 yr Well, after letting the birdies out for a fly and watching them search the carpet for stray seeds, I felt guilty... so I put a hole in the layer of new stuff to show them there were seeds under it. (Laughing out loud). They of course went to town, on the seeds :/ But it was fun watching them get the other stuff stuck to their beaks and heads while trying to poke their heads into the hole and get just seeds. Mae is much pickier about being clean, every time she would get something on her she would go back to the perch and wipe her face on it... Sunshine just kept eating. Hopefully they will start to associate the new stuff with food and eventually accept it as food. I'm going to stick to it for a while. Maybe I will get pics later today!
November 9, 200519 yr Risha, that is a good start. I think if you keep giving it to them they will eventually eat it. MIne were really picky about getting it on their beaks at first too, now they could care less LOL.
November 9, 200519 yr (Laughing out loud) - made me chuckle too! Well, my lot got 'le grass cafe' for the first time today, and first they ignored it, then Tommy decided to try it and liked it and so Phil joined him. Realising it was something nice, Lil immediately flew down and chased them away and has been monopolising it ever since....... She does exactly the same with the curly kale. The boys and Angelica have to get in quick, or they don't get a chance! Bossy birdy!
November 14, 200519 yr Oh Yeah!!! The birdies are eating the Beak Appetite... This morning I put some in their dish with NO seeds... and they chowed down. *happy dance* This is the first thing I've gotten them to eat besides seeds. Now if I could just convince them that fresh veggies are not evil.. Oh, and both of them need a bath, they have food all over them... (Laughing out loud)! Risha
November 14, 200519 yr mmm must make up a new batch tonight. apple carrot harvest. yum yum. the budgie versions smell so much nicer than the large bird versions. i hate cinnamon :
November 15, 200519 yr I also have good news on the budgie version, both Patty and Max love both the apple harvest and the veggie delight, the others have yet to be converted but even if one of them eats it its good enough for me.

Risha Hooray! mmm must make up a new batch tonight. apple carrot harvest. yum yum. the budgie versions smell so much nicer than the large bird versions. i hate cinnamon : That's what mine had this morning. I like that it doesn't take nearly as long to cook as the bigger bird versions. I also have good news on the budgie version, both Patty and Max love both the apple harvest and the veggie delight, the others have yet to be converted but even if one of them eats it its good enough for me. Hooray for Boomberry too!
