November 23, 200519 yr I use Trill and also another brand called Harmony....I also mix a of handful of my Galah's seed in each box of budgie seed( for the sunflower seeds) they really like them :ausb:
November 23, 200519 yr I alternate between Trill and Lovitt's budgie mix. I think it stops them getting bored, and the mixes seem to supply different vitamins. They get the budgie mix, wheatgrass, maybe some carrot or other vegie and cuttlefish bone.
November 24, 200519 yr Yeah, i've heard of Harmony...i don't change the seed i use as it stress' my budgies out!
November 24, 200519 yr I use Trill and Ive had no problems, I add a pinch of jungle munchies to each bowl and they then have Cede budgie egg mix with some other brand egg molting mix. Tonight however Im going to give them all a boost for the winter and give all my birds a weeks course of ACE High in their food also. I want to see for myself this wonder vitamin! Oh not to forget to add, that they each get 5 different kinds of fruit and veggies given twice a day too!
November 24, 200519 yr Which fruits and veggies do they get, boomberry? It sounds like they're doing okay without the vitamins. ACE includes significant doses of vitamins A, C, and E. I wouldn't worry about vitamin A being "overdosed" but C (a vitamin they don't even really need) and E I'm not sure about. There is such a thing as too many vitamins so if they're getting these from their regular diet I wouldn't worry about adding more. Edited November 24, 200519 yr by eterri
November 24, 200519 yr The vitamins are really for Barnslee Terri who doesnt eat any fruit or veggies at all. The budgies all eat, spinach, carrots with the tops on, sugar snap peas, apple, melon and brocoli - thats is in fact 6! I was only going too add a really small amount in the budgies egg mix. The tiels were really getting it. Im worried because Ive smelt the ACE and it smells and Im worried Barnslee now wont eat the food I put it in.
November 24, 200519 yr The smell might put him off, yeah. I can't remember, have you ever tried mixing baby food with seeds for him? If the vitamins don't work, you might have luck with that. Mine love it.
November 24, 200519 yr Its stodgy he wont eat anything stodgy, he wont eat anything other than seed or millet, I put vitamin drops in his seed yesterday and he just ate millet and out of another seed pot he didn''t know that contained drops too. It worries me he is eating Charlies poop thats why I think its a vitamin thing.
November 24, 200519 yr Booms if your desperate to get vitamins into him, you could put the liquid on his feathers, remove his bath water, and he will swallow it when he preens himself. Just a thought, as that's how I get worm paste into my cats
November 24, 200519 yr Hmmm I never thought of that I could dissolve them in their bath spray and give him a little spray, thats a good idea, he doesnt preen to often he just plucks but he eats the feathers so he wil eat the vitamin - good idea.
November 24, 200519 yr I'd be careful about that. If he thinks something is "wrong" with his feathers, he may pluck more of them. He EATS the feathers?? Birds are so hard to understand sometimes. He will eat his own feathers but won't touch veggies.
November 24, 200519 yr I will try it once and do Charlie at the same time so its not just him. Yep thats why I never find any feathers he eats them. Like I said its only teen ones he plucks not big ones, thats why I never find the evidence. I was watching him do it last night.
November 24, 200519 yr So he just plucks the down feathers? Where does he pluck them from? I think you said under the wings?
November 24, 200519 yr Yes never big feathers, the under side of both his wings where he would rest his head when he is asleep. Also sometimes his tummy - he isnt at all bald there though and very rarely the tops of his legs, mainly the wings though.
November 24, 200519 yr Plucking is such a weird thing. It does sound like you're right about him having deficiencies and it could be that but it might be something else completely. Or a combination of things. I think it might be a good idea to at least have him tested for giardia. Cockatiels commonly have itchy skin and pick only under their wings when they have an infection of the parasite Giardia. You or your veterinarian won't know this without lab tests. http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-2149.html He may have to be tested for giardia a few times, it doesn't always show up the first time around. But it would definitely be easier to treat than guessing at other causes. I just worry that adding things to his food or feathers might make it worse or that by the time you rule out other things, it will be more advanced and harder to take care of. You could save a lot of money by holding off on bloodwork until he's had tests for giardia though bloodwork would show you exactly what deficiencies he has and what vitamins you need to supplement until he's on a better diet. November 24, 200519 yr Thanks a bunch Terri he is booked in for a week today I guess I will try the ACE today but hold off on spraying him with the stuff. This does help, does it say whether its contagious because Charlie or any of the budgies have never plucked or itched more than usual.
November 24, 200519 yr just thought id add this in, booms do you remember when i posted about casper biting his feathers? he wasnt plucking them just biting them. i took him to the vets and he got a clean bill of health, so it is still a mystery why he did that. he doesnt do it anymore - it lasted a few weeks and that was it.
November 24, 200519 yr Giardia is highly contagious, and yes, can be passed to humans. I think it's a little parasite. Anyway, the only symptoms in humans is the initial infection, when you get extremely bad gastro like symptoms, and the worst case of vomiting you've ever had. (I know this because my youngest got it at 6 months and ended up in hospital with dehydration!) After that, you may, or may not, have extremely smelly poops! and after a lengthy period of infection, your poops may or may not turn white! I know here that it is a notifiable disease. It can be passed from any animal to any animal, infection is from actually getting faeces in your stomach! So, hygiene is extremely imoortant! Day care centres (which is how my middle one passed it on to my baby) are rife with it! Also, water can be contaminated with it.
November 24, 200519 yr gross lin! you and your parasites!! euuuugh!!!!!! : doesnt the chlorine in our water get rid of them?
November 24, 200519 yr I think so. Water supplies in places like Bali and Africa can be contaminated, but not generally where water is treated. Aren't parasites fascinating
