Posted October 15, 200519 yr I found some great carrots at the supermarket-they had about two feet of green ferny growth at the top. They were a bit more expensive and why and earth you would buy them if you didn't have budgies I don't know but I hung a big bunch of the green in the cage and they love it-it looks good too because it makes the cage look like a tree!

October 15, 200519 yr i get them too sometimes when the local farmers market is on. the bunches are huge and he even gives us extra tops that he has leftover but the trouble is they go bad much quicker than regular carrots and i end up wasting half of it because casper cant eat it all quick enough! so i only buy them once a month and get ordinary ones the rest of the time.
October 15, 200519 yr i wonder why the carrots are so much smaller when they come with the tops on too! (Laughing out loud). i think its quite funny. last time i got some i came home with a whole carrier bag full of the tops - we only have a small fridge so we had to leave them on the vegetable rack. i just found out that casper hates kale. he wont touch the stuff. odd because he isnt fussy with new foods now.
October 15, 200519 yr Great idea, remember to wash them. If you cut the top off a carrot which has greens still attached and then place this on a saucer (dish) with water they sometimes grow more.
October 17, 200519 yr I buy carrots and tops all the time. I got them from Sainsburys, but they do go off super quick. Im growing my own next year dead easy to grow and they are my bird fave food. Even the tiels love them.
November 2, 200519 yr My Mum always gets Dutch (i think that's what they are called) carrots, which are small carrots with the green stuff on top. I make sure i save some of the foliage for my budgies; they love it!

November 2, 200519 yr I don't think i've ever really noticed carrots with the greens still attatched. My breeding birds are on a carrot eating frenzy whenever i put carrot in the cages. I give them a third of a carrot and it's gone soooo fast and the only evidence that it was ever there is the bright orange faces all the birds have! Me and Blinkie are much more tidy when we eat carrot.

If you want some with the tops still on go out to the farmer's markets at EPIC on saturday morn my guineapigs love the tops of them.
November 4, 200519 yr We've often grown carrot tops, almost any carrot top will grow in a saucer of water, if left long enough. Mine love curly kale! They got so excited when I took their 'ball' out to put the kale in yesterday. Then they fairly leapt on it when I put it in the cage. okay, so it ends up on the floor, but they do eat it and enjoy it. They don't seem that bothered about carrot, but they do have a peck at it. My lot are too nosey to totally ignore their fruit and veg!!
