Itchy Bottom

I was a bit concerned about Tobi she had been itching her botty with her feet for a day or so, I caught her yesterday and took a look.

She has normal poops, but she was a bit dirty round her vent and also I noticed the feathers that she has been itching had gone all dry and hard and even come out leaving her a bald area around her vent. I cleaned her up and she isnt doing it as much now and is pooping and doing everything else fine.

Can anyone shed any light on what this might be.

How strange! :D How does she manage to scratch her butt with her foot?? Would be kinda hard.

We're talking about Boomberry's birds Bea :D:P:P

I dunno Bea but she manages quite well and made herself sore, she also made my finger damn sore when I was cleaning her up. She has a worse bite than Charlie.

So youve no idea what would case her to have an itchy botty?

Do budgies get worms?

Yes, they do get worms, but I think they just lose weight and get ill with it, don't know if they get itchy bots. What does she sit on Booms? Anything new? Or have you cleaned the perches or cage with something new? I'm thinking some kind of allergy?

She hasnt got anything at all new in her cage, and this has only just started. She seems better now Ive cleaned her up, she isnt off or anything just itchy. Hope she stops or she will be Miss Bald Botty forever hehe!!

Might be something out of the cage that she lands on? Or even a new food? Though I think that's unlikely. Bet she's got the cutest bald bottom though :D:P:P

Someone told me she might be pregnant which I think is highly unlikely since she is only 5 months old and her room mate Max is only just over 6 months and although they are smoochy now and again they are more than often squabbling and have never seen them mate. Max likes to mate with objects anyways hehe!

Max likes to mate with objects anyways hehe!

Maybe she stood still long enough for Max to think she was an object? :D:P:P

I can't see her having mated causing this. Anyone else? Where's Eterri when you need her?

I just dont have a clue, I will see how she goes on if it doesnt heal up, Ive got Barnslee booked in at the vets on Thursday for his wings clipped (seen as though it was successful with Charlie) so could take her along if needed. She does seem better now Ive cleaned the hard matted feathers up but wonder why she started in the first place.

Boomberry when was the last time you did worm them?

To be honest daz I dont think Tobi has ever been wormed, are there any other symptons than itching. I can get worming stuff on Thursday - do you think that might be it?

I don't know if it is worms Boomberry. I can't find anything in my stuff on itch bottoms. Tape Worm the Symptoms are simple: diarrhea, death

The Cestodes (tapeworm) parasite can be found in the intestine of birds. Not all tapeworms are pathogenic. A significant number can exist in a bird's intestine and not cause any ill effects.

Treatment: For small passerines and psittacines, niclosamide at 500 mg/kg body weight. For parrots, praziquantel administered orally or dichlorophen at 600 mg/kg body weight.

I worm my birds two weeks in to Quarantine and them every 3 months. You just put the medication in the Water for a 24 hour period. Best to do it the night before as they like to drink in the morning. I just wormed Razzle and will do Ash next tuesday.

Thanks Daz she hasnt got diarrhoea, perfect poops but I will get some worming medication on Thursday when I go to the vets, it cant hurt doing them all anyway can it.

I will check her bottom tonight to see if she has been itching. It looked pretty clean this morning so hopefully the clean up cleared things up I hope.

You mentioned having to clean her up and hard matted feathers. What is causing them to harden? You said her poops are fine but are they sticking to her vent?

It sounds like the itchiness is just a result of having a messy vent, not necessarily a symtpom of a problem. The real symptom would be the messy feathers at the vent unless I'm misunderstanding?

I think maybe she has had 1 poop stick to her and she has tried to scrat it off and thats whats spread and gone harder each time she is scratting at them. She seemed tonnes better when I washed her, I will see if it gets any better, but like her said her poops are fine. Maybe it was just the irritation of the dried poop and everyime she kept on scratting and the hard feather came out it was making even itchier?

It probably was the dried poop that was irritating her, yeah.

Oh good I was worried for a while, it was really getting her down, but I only noticed it Friday night. I have a super nasty sore finger from my little girl for the thanks of cleaning her!

Leave it to them to either thank us with bites or poops.

Yeah, she should be okay but of course, if it doesn't improve soon it might be good to have her checked out just in case.

Little cowbag I call her hehe.

Like I said Ive got an appointment at the vets for Barnslee on Thursday so if its no better or she is still itching, I'll take her along with me, lucky vet eh hehe!

i agree with eterri, there are usually other symtoms with worms - but i have my budgies wormed when i first bring them home, even if they show no signs. i havent wormed them since because they are inside birds there is nothing they can come into contact with that would cause a problem. its always good to have them done at first though and it certainly wont do them any harm.

i hate talking about parasites. euuugh, it freaks me out.

i hope everything goes okay at the vets :)

Star sometimes suffers from this, especially after greens, several good baths and a cotton bud normally does the trick. :) I think it gets worse as they get older.

I was going to say know the feeling, blinking alien probes. :)

I've known Budgy2 to fiddle with his feet around his vent area and when I've looked there has been a normal poop which I think has just got caught on a feather on the way out and dried and just irritated him.

Thanks Guys.

I noticed this morning that when I woke her up she had another couple of poops dried to her feathers. Completely normal poops that just havent dropped so again she is fiddling with her butt grrrrrr.

Why arent these poops dropping and it only seems to happen overnight.
