Poor Feather Growth

Featured Replies

Thanks Boomberry! I've just put him into the travel cage and there is such a stunned silence from them all it's quite comical. It's as if they're saying to each other,"Did you see what just happened? That large hand just came in and scooped Budgy2 out and plonked him in that tiny little cage HELP someone"!Birdy and Sherbet are sat there in shock with their little heads peeping round at Budgy who is sat beside them happily tucking into his seed!

Setting off in ten minutes so will report back in then.

Oh how sweet! Birds shocked into silence! (Laughing out loud) They'll all want to go for a Sunday drive now!

Sounds like good news - so all he needs is a beauty treatment twice a week (feather-dresser Julie) and a cooked meal (steak and eggs will do him a treat! (Laughing out loud))

I'm pleased it was good news. He needs a kiss from me Julie, for being such a good boy!

Julie Im so glad to hear its nothing potentially serious. Do you remeber when Teapot was in a constant moult? Nearly drained him of his life a couple of times. However, his vet prtescribed ACEhigh vitamin and mineral suppliment, a cslcium suppliment, and also a probiotic. It took weeks, many weeks, but with the huge boost to his system, Teapot stopped Moulting. He still losed feathers now and again, thats good and natural, but its been about 6 months or so since he had a huge feather loss.

Id deffinately recommend that you ask your vet about the ACEhigh suppliment. Its about 20 pounds unfortunately for a tub, but a tub has a year long shelf life, more sometimes, and you only use the tiniest pinch once a day. So 20 pounds isnt at all expensive when you think it will ghive your bird/birds a fabulous boost for at least a year.

Its also wonderful to have in for when your birds have 'off days', boosts them right back up again.

Hugs to you and little Budgie2

Anne

glad to hear he is okay julie.

when peanut was alive he was prescribed a protein supplement to help with his feather growth. it was a powder that you add to the water or over food. i also used to feed him a hard boiled organic egg every couple of days to get his strength up.

hope all the changes make the world of difference to him and he is on the mend soon.

Aw thank you to everyone for your concern and also all the great advice and input. I've been to the pet store and bought ?16 worth of protein!

You've given me some great ideas and I'll try anything to get him right.

He did NOT enjoy his 'head massage' this afternoon!

Thanks for that! I've ordered some Avimix (with ACEhigh) and some wheatgrass (from a different store).

LOL I can imagine how that went! How are your poor fingers, Julie? Is there anything left? :P

As far as protein sources, there are quite a few, but the trick will be getting him to eat them. :P Egg food is a great protein source - I just sprinkle it over their food but I think you can feed it moistened too. Pellets have protein, so do cooked grains if he will eat them. What protein did you buy? Good luck - hopefully you will see improvement soon by changing his daylight hours.

I bought CeDe eggfood which so far Sherbet and Birdy have eaten and Budgy2 hasn't touched!I bought some egg food and honey seed bars which they have all tried.I also bought a seed supplement which has added protein in but I'm saving that for if nothing else works! I got some vitamin and mineral drops. I've also ordered some Avimix(ACEhigh) and some wheatgrass.

I know he won't eat chopped boiled egg.

I offered the egg food moistened and dry.

I'm hoping that as the others seemed to like it it will tempt him to eat some as well.

My fingers are o.k.thanks Rainbow! He's not a biter and didn't even try to bite but the noise and wriggling-my goodness you'd think I was torturing him,and I thought he might quite enjoy it if he's itchy!

:P:P

I'm glad you still have fingers. I can just hear that noise - poor Budgy. Even if he were to enjoy it he wouldn't let on.

:P

Thats okay it's a good site, I use to use it before buying trade via wholesalers.

The Avimix is a strange powder and they say to sprinkle it on the seeds. Star didn't like it at first as it had a strongish odour so only try a little to start with. :P

Thanks-I'll remember that.

oooh wheatgrass julie! budgy2 wouldnt dare turn his nose up at that!

what a spoilt little boy he is - all for his own benefit though. sounds silly but dont over-do the vitamins, it can sometimes do as much harm as good. feeding or supplementing too much protein can actually put a strain on the kidneys. when peanut was ill he only had one vitmain supplement per day (one pinch) and i changed his diet slightly. obviously it depends on what your vet has advised especially for budgy2 - all cases are different, but i thought i would mention it anyway.

Again thanks pixie,I appreciate that. I know what you mean about overdoing it,so at the moment I am only giving them drops which have vitamins in and also the CeDe eggfood. I won't give tham all at once to him!

thats okay julie, hope budgy2 is feeling a bit better today. :(

has your wheatgrass arrived yet or did you buy it from a health shop? i havent found anywhere that sells it yet so i just buy it online. come to think of it i need to get some more soon!

Time for a quick update!

I have to say that Budgy2 does seem to be looking an awful lot sleeker and flatter feathered. I can't say what it is that seems to be working as I haven't seen him eating even a morsel of any form of protein I've offered him! He won't touch egg, chicken, mince etc. or eggfood.I can only think that it might be the 10 hours of daylight and no more and maybe the vitamin intake.

When I'm using the Avimix does anyone know how regularly I sprinkle it on the seed? Is it every day or will that be too much,it doesn't say on the instructions.

My wheatgrass has arrived pixie and only needs to grow another inch and then I can feed it to them! Can't wait! I bought it from Northern Parrots

glad to hear he is feelingbetter julie :) i have no idea about that particular supplement though.

have you tried lentils and some beans for a source of potein? if he wont eat egg he might not touch them but then again he might. also beak appetite has a fair amount of protein in it. you can buy it from northern parrots.

northern parrots is a really cool site. i get their magazine sent too me too :) when you introduce the wheatgrass be sure to have your camera julie! i hope they like it.

I will pixie! I really can't wait to see them with it!

Thanks for the tip about lentils and beans etc. certainly worth a try.

It is frustrating because both the others seem to enjoy the eggfood!

gah, typical! budgies can be so stubborn! ive never fed lentils as of yet but you could possibly mix them with seed and see how they go down? or just a simple cooked beans and lentils mix. just a thought. im having lentil soup for dinner so thats what made me think of it :)

Ooh save me some then!

too late ive scoffed it :)

I use to add it every few days to new seeds, if done everyday I think it gets overpowering for them.

I use Northern Parrots as one of my main suppliers so if anyone wants any bits then let me know, I can normally discount the larger items, also I have bits n bobs in my eBay shop.

:)

Oh thank you Featherdpets-both for the info and the kind offer!
