Posted September 26, 200519 yr I have had Joey for about 2 1/2 months. He is a male and about twenty four weeks old. When he first comes out of the cage he flies straight down to the ground. Sometimes he then goes on to fly around the room although he seems to get tired after a short while. Yesterday when he came out he flew straight down to the ground and he tried a couple of times to fly but just gave up and stepped onto my finger to be put back on his cage. He is normal in every other way he plays and kisses and preens Charlie and seems very happy in every way. Any ideas of why he can fly around some days and not others. September 26, 200519 yr Do you know how much he weight? He could be overweight. Also, if he's not used to flying it can take a while for him to build strength in those muscles. What type of diet is he on? It's sometimes hard to know that a budgie is obese by looking at them so monitoring their weight using a gram scale is a good idea. :glare: If he hasn't had a check up at the avian vet that would be a good idea as well. They can tell you if he's overweight or if there is some underlying problem. If he gets a clean bill of health, you can work on continuing to let him exercise and build the muscles he needs in order to gain stamina to fly.
September 26, 200519 yr as far as you know, has Joey had his wings clipped whilst very young? If his wings have been clipped at too young an age, he will not have been able to develop the neccessary chest muscle needed for flight. Do his wings look even, could there possibly be a wing injury? As alreadt sated, an avian check up would not go amiss here.
September 26, 200519 yr my friends budie has a similar problem. Its a tiny budgie - so she isn't too fat to fly. my friend has taken her to the vvets and all sorts and they find nothing wrong. i don't know the answer but i atrip to the vets for a check up might be worht a try.
September 26, 200519 yr We had a budgie who didn't fly much, I think he was scared. Perhaps some birds just don't like flying or weren't taught by their parents.
September 27, 200519 yr My Candy was the same and although better he still isnt a strong flyer, his was down to being overweight and refusing to come out of the cage. Mianly because he is scared of a couple of the other birds. We have come to a compromise where comes out just with Bobby his roomy hehe and he does at least a coupl of full flights of the room which is a first for him. So if he is getting fed lots of honey treats as Candy was this could be once of the reasons.
October 3, 200519 yr http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y295/lion...2/Picture22.jpg The blue budgie is Joey. He is fatter than Charlie. They will both only eat seed at the moment although I do put veg in their cage. They only have millet once a week. Charlie was checked and he is healthy part from his flying problem. Joey is also a lot quited than Charlie, Charlie is the verbal one and also the boss even though he is smaller. Edited October 3, 200519 yr by JJ2571
