October 17, 200519 yr What I dont get is why are the claiming it could kill 10's of thousands of people here, yet in a 3rd world country it only claimed 60 lives. Surely we have more resources than them. This question hasnt been answered by anymore I dont think yet.
October 17, 200519 yr If the predicted Bird Flu Pandemic is anything like the Foot and mouth epidemic in the uk, where animals are concerned the government will probably have every bird culled like it did with the cows etc. Edited October 17, 200519 yr by lisa
October 17, 200519 yr What I dont get is why are the claiming it could kill 10's of thousands of people here, yet in a 3rd world country it only claimed 60 lives. Surely we have more resources than them. This question hasnt been answered by anymore I dont think yet. booms, we probably do have more resources. it has only killed 60 people there because it is hard for humans to contract in the current state and form of the virus. if it mutates (which it seems like it is only a matter of time) then that is when it will kill thousands as the virus would be very contagious just like the common cold. also, countries in the far east are far more sparsely populated than britain. the british isles are so small and the population is so much more dense. as you would only catch a new strain of bird flu by close contact with someone else who has it, it would most likely spread much more quickly in the UK than it would in say rural China.
October 17, 200519 yr And with our social and transport systems it will spread faster, mutate quicker and kill a lot more. It's now in Greece http://www.guardian.co.uk/birdflu/story/0,...1594142,00.html
October 18, 200519 yr If the predicted Bird Flu Pandemic is anything like the Foot and mouth epidemic in the uk, where animals are concerned the government will probably have every bird culled like it did with the cows etc. Hi Defra have a good website http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/n...aninfluenza.htm I know that in Scotland if a case of avian flu is suspected, there will be an exclusion zone set up, if confirmed the poultry will be culled in a similar way to foot and mouth herds. It sounds awful - I hope it doesn't hit here too hard. A lot of migrating birds stop at the esturies on the scottish east coast. They did say that domestic birds are exempt from any exclusion zones/culls etc, but if you are worried your bird is ill contact the vet immediately as it is a notifiable disease and the vet will know what to do. Tracey PS as for it going into the human chain - not very likely to happen in europe, it usually happens when humans and poultry sleep in the same room and the hygiene conditions are non existent. Its also impossible to make a vaccine incase it does jump as you need the specific DNA for that strain.
October 18, 200519 yr Confirmed in the EU http://www.guardian.co.uk/birdflu/story/0,...1595015,00.html
October 19, 200519 yr What a horrible situation we are all in, and they did say we are a good few years over due for a pandemic...
October 21, 200519 yr bird flu has been found in a parrot in the UK! luckily it was in quarantine and is being destroyed.
October 21, 200519 yr http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4365956.stm bird flu found in UK it was culled along with all the other birds in the unit but it just makes it hit home its gettin here ATD
October 21, 200519 yr yup not long now. i just found this on the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention website: In rare instances, limited human-to-human spread of H5N1 virus has occurred, and transmission has not been observed to continue beyond one person. Most of these cases have occurred from contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces; however, it is thought that a few cases of human-to-human spread of H5N1 have occurred. quite concerning. oh well, what will be - will be, i guess. October 22, 200519 yr having read up on the post here i am going to keep my budgies in from now on. It's just that they love to be outside. I have 1cm sized mesh on my aviery and it is covered so they do not come into contact with wild bird poop so i think they have a low risk. If anybody knows different then please let me know. I do not sell or move my birds either they are only for me and i donot buy birds now as i breed my own it's more fun. This is scary and i hope it does not get too bad. But mother nature has a way of trying to right herself and this is just another way of culling the human race natures way as we don't kill each other by having wars anymore. It has nothing to do with mother nature trying to prevent wars. There is alot of famine and disasters. This bird flu just seems to be helping to drive all of the things happening to biblical proportions; especially if 200 million people do in fact contract this and die. I do wish there was a way if knowing how to keep our pets safe. My birds and cat do not go outside, but the dogs have to. Is this bird flu something that dogs can contract with contact to bird feces outside? they are always sniffin around the yard.
October 22, 200519 yr Just heard on the news that the first case of Avian Flu has been detected in the UK in a parrot.
October 22, 200519 yr Author just heard on the radio they are considering banning all imports of birds (any birds) and are now asking people who keep any birds to report anything strange straight away
October 22, 200519 yr just heard on the radio they are considering banning all imports of birds (any birds) and are now asking people who keep any birds to report anything strange straight away I have to say Good. I hope the ban is enforced with regard to the import of wild birds which is what the government is trying to do. Then keep it permanently, there are enough breeders in each country to satisfy demand. The horrible trade in wild birds must be stopped. Please everyone never buy a wild caught bird, horrible that over 500 parrots/sofbills where culled because of a stupid company importing wild birds. They should start culling those companys and the people involved. http://www.guardian.co.uk/birdflu/story/0,...1598102,00.html
October 23, 200519 yr I'm happy there banning importing of wild birds but also very upset as there also banning imports of Captive bred birds. This means I'll never beable to get Merlin a mate from a breeder in Belgium next year when I have the money
October 23, 200519 yr I think the government are trying to ban the import of wild birds only at the moment across the whole of the EU, that's what it said on the TV last night, a few of the web news sites say differently though. Providing responsible people import captive bred birds correctly then this should be okay but only if the welfare of the birds is put above all else. There are a lot of cowboys out there that should be stopped/closed down and hopefully a ban on the wild birds will help end this horrible trade (wild birds etc).
