Yes I read that the other day, just imagine the consequences if that got out, then mutated with what's already out there.

yea but if you think what else these boffins have very scary

Scary stuff. :/

Edited by eterri

Also read an article about how they have found out that bats may have spread Sars and the ebola viruses mainly due to the oriential and african societies drinking their blood. Also bird flu may have been spread from Asia again due to the drinking of duck blood. Why do humans do such stupid and sick things.

the main reasons are that the farmers in the far east are very poor and they were not willing to mass cull their livestock to prevent an outbreak. now we are looking at a global disaster and 200 million people may be affected.

still dont know if its the h5n1 virus we find out on wednesday after the test are done

test results are in - it is h5n1. it is thought that it could be a matter of weeks before the virus could possibly hit the UK.

"The H5N1 bird flu strain does not easily infect humans"

So unless you work with infected chickens there's no need to worry.

Also can only be spread by infected chickens so far and there's a ban on moving them out of affected countries so risk is even more minimum.

All this news stuff is the Antis scaremongering to ban birdkeeping and it's working.

The scare is that the virus will mutate into a strain that can be spread from human to human. In that scenario, it would be a hard thing to stop. Apparently all it would take is for someone to have a normal case of the flu and bird flu at the same time. It could create a hybrid that could spread as easily as the normal flu does.

well as it is the goverments own scientist that are stating this where do the antis come in in my opinion this is not scaremongering but could be a real real problem ask the families of the 60 people who have died from it

"The H5N1 bird flu strain does not easily infect humans" YET!

eterri is right. vunerable people such as the elderly, farm workers, children are being advised by the government to get flu jabs. the less people that are infected with the human flu virus - the less likely the virus will be to mutate.

it could go one of two ways. the bird flu could mix with a strain of human flu that is easily treated which would make the immunisations more affective in combating it or it could go the other way and turn out to be deadly and more resistant to the anti flu medication.

it really isnt scaremongering at all, it is the governments advice. it is a very serious concern - but one that can be managed and measures are already in place in the uk to try to stop this from getting out of hand.

It could be a big problem i wish they could suggest ways in which we can keep our pet birds safe? Maybe we need to put our avairy into another avairy so that the wild birds don`t come into contact with them make sure that everything is sterilised etc. I here its contracted bird from bird by direct contact and faeces. There is a vacincine for humans for one of the strain so why isn`t there one to give to the birds?

I think they did have a vaccine for birds, but during there recent tests it failed and they now have to go back to try and find another one.

having read up on the post here i am going to keep my budgies in from now on. It's just that they love to be outside.

I have 1cm sized mesh on my aviery and it is covered so they do not come into contact with wild bird poop so i think they have a low risk.

If anybody knows different then please let me know.

I do not sell or move my birds either they are only for me and i donot buy birds now as i breed my own it's more fun.

This is scary and i hope it does not get too bad. But mother nature has a way of trying to right herself and this is just another way of culling the human race natures way as we don't kill each other by having wars anymore.

got the radio on in the background and a goverment boffin has just said that they are going to put special watchs on wet lands and if anybody finds large quantity of dead birds report to defra and there could be a possibility that the virus could be in the duck population but they don't have the symptoms just carriers

But Hath, surely if they're carriers then it doesn't affect them? It shouldn't kill them if they just carry it, only if it is a disease to them? Does that make sense?

  • Author

lin it makes perfect sense because i thought that as well but he did say a possibility it had not been proven yet but there was some evidence that was being look at

scary stuff !!!!

But encouraging news came from China, where state media said a new, improved vaccine for birds has been developed, a low-cost spray that could protect them from the H5N1 strain of avian flu.

There's at least a little bit of good news!

That would be good news, lets hope it works and they vaccinate enough birds in time before it mutates again.
