September 13, 200519 yr I buy these from www.featheredpets.com. You get a huge strip in a roll, just cut off a strip and clip it to the side of the cage, mine go through a whole roll a month. I didn't think they would use it but they absolutely LOVE shredding it. Try some!
September 13, 200519 yr well it would be a plus as i have found out if you dont provide something they will find something (Laughing out loud) ATD
September 13, 200519 yr I find that if you provide something its not good enough anyway and they still prefer to find their own.
September 13, 200519 yr True but all my birds have been taken with these shredder things, and for ?5 they are good value.
September 13, 200519 yr True but all my birds have been taken with these shredder things, and for ?5 they are good value. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've wondered about those and what they are like....might get some! I put small pieces of cuttlefish in her cage and she destroys a piece a day! She loves the fruit flavoured bits of wood....I got my bloke to saw them in to little squares and I hang them in the cage on a bit of chain with a bell on the end. Oh, and she loves a good chew on the daily newspaper too but when she comes out I must say she is as good as gold! Not sure what Kylie might get up to though....
September 13, 200519 yr Sarah I would definitely recommend investing in some if you dont like them so be it but mine go down a treat they choose to chew those instead of millet!!
September 13, 200519 yr they choose to chew those instead of millet!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Blimey charlie...they must be something special!!!!
September 13, 200519 yr Love to read thos thread. Somehow budgies the destroyers amuses me. Cha Pou will destroy everything I make or buy her. She is after my partner's pants right now trying to decorate it with holes she chew.
September 13, 200519 yr I give my bird shredders made by planet pleasures from natural woven palm leaves. Also cuttlebone, sand covered perches, tril treats (which are destroyed and not eaten) and several fingers :feedbirds:
September 14, 200519 yr Blinkie is super talented at chewing up my school work. It annoys me but deep down i know he only trying to decorate the edges of my paper so i get higher grades. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Mine like to decorate my papers (and expensive textbooks ). They also enjoy lampshades, picture frames, and blinds They love raffia, I hang a bundle in their cage and they both share it ( quite unusual) they also enjoy those shredders and soft balsa wood.
September 14, 200519 yr Boomberry thanks for mentioning me, I should learn to read the full post before posting :glare:
September 15, 200519 yr My budgies aren't that destructive... well they do constantly try and get the white coating off the bars on their cage, which I must admit they're doing quite well at... ~1/3 of the cage is now metal coloured... I'm beginning to think that it's not a very high quality cage... other than that I struggle to get them to chew up anything... they ignore cardboard rolls (from Kitchen paper) even with food inside it... and I treated them to a Pinata after seeing the posts on this forum.... I'm still waiting for them to overcome their 'fear' of it... as the smallest pinata available was quite a bit bigger than them... but I'm looking forward to when they do start attacking it! Well I paid for it, and I'd like them to use it... other than that they aren't very destructive in my room... Storm does enjoy attacking the bits of plastic that hold the blinds up but thats about it...
September 27, 200519 yr It's normal for them to be scared of the pinata, mine were too. It's been a few weeks since this thread was active - Allycat, did your budgies try it yet?
September 27, 200519 yr My birdies love to destroy things - or at the very least attempt to! I plaited some natural string for them and made it into a 'preening toy' and they spend hours playing with it. I do keep an eye on it to make sure it's safe, but as it basically 9 pieces of string plaited together it's quite thick and strong. They love it. They also love stripping the bark off their wooden perch, pecking at the wooden ladders and, well, they just love to destroy whatever they can get their beaks on really. I want to get some shredders at some point - they sound brilliant!! I think my budgie-birds would highly approve of them. Tommy seemed very sedate (2 years old) when we first got him, but now he's moved into the Brio, he's as daft as the 'lil 'uns when it comes to playing and destroying everything. I definitely think budgies need to have something they can really get their beak into, though preferably not our wallpaper which does bear a few birdy scars.......
September 29, 200519 yr They haven't tried it yet... but I ended up taking it out of the cage because they were only 'using' half the cage while it was there... but I hung it on the side of the cage so they could get used to it... I'm going to try and put it ontop of the cage where they sometimes perch and see what their reaction to it is... to be honest, the cage is getting a bit full! I will let you all know if they ever do decide it looks worth playing with!
September 29, 200519 yr Once they get use to seeing the pinata around then try it back in the cage. Also do they like millet, if so next time it's put back in the cage place some millet near it so that they associate it with something good. I must confess that I personally find a piece of Shredders better as the pinatas normally dwarf budgies.
