Posted June 7, 200915 yr Yesterday afternoon I decided to put a branch of Wattle in my avairy......yes... without reading the FAQ's on poisonious plants.....I removed it in the early hours of this morning when I read you couldn't put them with your budgies, the plant was in there for about 6 hours.......when I removed the plant my baby J.T's beak was bleeding....what have I done? are they all going to die? I have cleaned up J.T with just warm water and put him inside for the day, I have to go to work as there are only 2 of us there today, it's a Public holiday in QLD......i will call the vet as soon as i get home....maybe J.T has hurt his beak somehow else? June 7, 200915 yr What type of plant was it that you removed. Can you put up a picture of his beak for us to see, he may have just scraped it up on the branch.
June 7, 200915 yr Posioning shouldn't cause external bleeding. Can you see if it is internal. He may have just hurt himself.

If the branch was a new experience for them, it could take some time for them to start to chew. Taking it out is the best thing You'll have to monitor them. I don't thing any vets will be open today. June 8, 200915 yr Can you work out where he is bleeding, is it coming from his beak edges, his tongue or from further inside his mouth? As Daz said he may have just hurt himself somehow. I assume he has stopped bleeding for now. Is he showing any other signs of illness? What is his alertness like? Are any others affected? As Daz said the others may not have tried chewing on it yet. Are there signs of the bark or leaves being chewed? Can you post bigger pictures please? Let him rest, make sure he has access to plenty of water, ring an avian vet and take him there as soon as you can. Edit: I'm trying to find my list of dangerous plants and what they do. All I can find at the moment between cramming for exams is the "false acacia" is documented to cause vomiting and muscle tremors. Edited June 8, 200915 yr by Chrysocome
June 10, 200915 yr Author Thanks guys for helping.... I took J.T to the Vet's on the Tues...took an extra long lunch break.... he said that J.T had cut his tongue....I didn't even know they had a tongue?????? it's heaps better now and he is still by himself but eating and drinking fine, I didn't take a sample of the bush to the vet's with me...I was in too much of a stress attack and forgot....all the birds are fine thank goodness....I will NEVER be so silly again. Thanks again.. :offtopic: This is a picture of the bush I out in if anyone can tell me what it is......... The bit I put in did not have the red floewers.......just the branches.. Thanks Anne
June 10, 200915 yr That's a Grevilla. They are native and perfectly fine for budgies to eat. My guys love our Grevilla species we have in the garden. They especially love the flowers. I'm glad your guy is okay, whether or not he cut himself on one of the branches is something you will probably never know, but I do no the above plant is not posionous.
June 10, 200915 yr Author Maesie, thank you soooo much...I still feel like a idiot tho.... :offtopic: I'm just glad I didn't do any damage ( in the way of poison) and my J.T is okay.... Edited June 10, 200915 yr by anne101
June 10, 200915 yr Maesie, thank you soooo much...I still feel like a idiot tho.... :offtopic: I'm just glad I didn't do any damage and my J.T is okay.... I hear you! We all do things we regret, even if they don't turn out to be bad... Your birds will enjoy this plant, if you want to try it again. I cut off a nice big branch (you may want to start with a smaller one if your guys aren't used to them), I rince with some water and put it in... leaves, bark and flowers...
June 10, 200915 yr glad to hear everything is okay, if he yawns you will see the tongue, I even think I have a picture of Pretty on here some where yawning and you can see the tongue.
June 11, 200915 yr .... he said that J.T had cut his tongue....I didn't even know they had a tongue?????? Edited June 11, 200915 yr by KAZ
June 11, 200915 yr .... he said that J.T had cut his tongue....I didn't even know they had a tongue?????? I believe the picture above pretty much gives you the answer to really may have happened. Budgies often do a bit of "beak fencing" and I'd have a guess that J.T. has, in a moment of perfect timing, copped a nip on the tongue! As mentioned Grevillea is fine for budgies and I seriously doubt the bush had anything to do with the blood. In short, you've done nothing wrong and in fact it sounds like you're doing a great job with your birds!
June 11, 200915 yr Also, I noticed the grevillea is one of the extremely spiny ones.....maybe he got a bit enthusiastic with the chewing and got pricked by it.....
June 11, 200915 yr Author Thanks everyone.... LOL Kaz that photo is amazing!! WOW it's a tongue!!! Geeze do I have a lot to learn !! I guess I'll never really know how he did it...but he's okay that's the main thing.
June 12, 200915 yr Grevillea has always gone down really well with the budgies I've had over the years. I have generally found that the light coloured softer, newer shoots at the end of the branches and the flowers are the most popular bits for eating... they generally just shred and play with the tougher, darker leaves. They also love bottle brush branches (soft bits and flowers for eating, tougher bits for playing with).
