Hi :hi:

I'm Phylicia and I'm new to this site

I must say that this forum is one of the best on the internet.. This is where I did most of my research regarding budgies before I purchased one.

My family just got a little budgie about 5 days ago and he seems to be fitting in well :fear

He's a handreared one so is very tame and loves sunggling and cuddles.

This post is just to say hi and introduce ourselves :) Our budgie's name is Budgie (very original I know :) Haha..) and I think he's a cobalt blue and a yellow face type II?? That is why he's green? Am I right? :)

If you could please confirm his colouration for me that would be fantastic :)

And I'm also pretty sure he's a boy because he doesn't have white rings around his nostrils on his cere..:) He's currently 7 weeks old :)

Budgie nibbles quite abit. And there are times when it's quite hard. I was just wondering if this is normal... I read somewhere (might not have been on this site) that budgies nibble to tell you that they want something. Is this true? I was also wondering if there was a way for me to stop him from nibbling quite so hard as I'm just concerned that he might accidentally nibble my 6 month old son's fingers. My son has never been allowed to touch the budgie and vice versa but I'd just like to be careful :) I don't want either to get hurt :)

Here's a couple of photos of Budgie:

Hi and welcome! I certainly agree with you in the great website department. Everyone here is really helpful and friendly...

I am not particularly knowlegdeable when it comes to colours and mutations, but I can offer a tip for the nibbling. I had a budgie when I was a kid who was a biter. He was happy to be handled, but would just get a bit rough. We used to just say a firm "no", blow a little puff or air at him them (just enough that it made him blink... not blow him off our fingers!) put him straight back into his cage with the door shut for a fw minutes (like using time out for naughty kids!). Within a few weeks we just needed to say "no" with a little puff, then after that he responded to a sharp "no" quite well. There are probably many things which use the same principle of training the bird to respond to certian verbal cues to control behaviour. You might find something that works better for your family, and I am sure there are plenty of people here who have also managed to curb a biting budgie!

:hi: Phylly .....your budgie looks just great and seems to have some show budgie genes....he's a decent size.

Hope you enjoy it here

Hi CaspersRose:)

Thank you for the tip about nibbling.

I was wondering, do I just do it for every nibble even if it's not that hard or just when it hurts? As I quite like him nibbling... just not when it hurts :hi:

Yes, Kaz! That was the other question I forgot to ask... I was told that he is an English budgie rather than a pet sized one. I'm wondering, do you think he a cross between a pet budgie and an English budgie rather than a full English budgie? As I noticed that his head isn't as poofy as pictures of English budgies that I've seen. Or could this just be that he is young? Also, should I expect him to grow much more if he is an English budgie? What is their full grown lenght?

Thank you!:fear

He looks to be from show type parents....what you are calling "english" :hi:

We just did it for the savage ones... the ones hard enough that you pretty involuntarily pull your hand back! I think our budgie who had biting problems had two different bites... the affectionate/curious nibble and the savage "I want to hurt you" bite. We just responded to these nasty ones. He quickly learnt what degree of nibbling was acceptable. As long as you're pretty consistent with which bites get punished and which don't he will hopefully learn soon enough. If the blowing is awkward, a little shake of the hand he's sitting on can also work... just enough for him to lose his balance a little, not fall off completely! The idea is to create an unpleasant experience immediately following the unwanted behaviour.

So it is a two-part thing 1) unpleasant experience immediately after the bite (blow or shake) so he doesn't want to do it again, followed by 2) removal from the fun activity (interaction with you) to teach him that you don't want to play with him when he's like that. Once he associates these with his biting you should start to notice a reduction. Good luck!

Hi Welcome. :)

Your boy "budgie" is a lovely size.

I had to laugh about your name choice. I had a cat when I was a kid called "puss". :D

Welcome to BBC glad you are finding it the best we think so too :)

Merlin I believe is a 1/2 show or "English" Budgie too, I don't think he is full show but as your budgie grows you will be able too see more and decide. He is a doll, take some cute pictures and take on of those pictures and enter it in Budgie of the Month Contest (this is held monthly), if you like.

I think you asked his mutation I would say he is a Golden Face his face is very deep yellow per the picture and the green is coming in very olive like which he may be a mauve instead of a cobalt. More pictures in the Mutation Section would help too :D.

Again welcome.

Welcome to the forum! Budgie is gorgeous :)

:) and WELCOME yes you are right this is a great forum. I love your budgie :D

Hello and welcome.

Budgie is a very handsome boy :)

I am so pleased you like it here too. :D

Hi all =D

Thank you very much for the warm welcome :D

It's great getting such a warm reception :)

It's nice to know that Budgie is a goldenface.... however, after doing some research about the difference between yellowfaces (type I and II) and goldenface, I have thoroughly confused myself! :) Haha.... I think I'll just leave the genetics to the experts :)

I must say though that I'm not sure if Budgie is a mauve as I can't seem to make out the olive tinge that Elly can see.... Sorry.... could it be that maybe he was sitting in some shadows that he looks darker than normal? Especially after seeing some pictures of olive budgies... ( :) So pretty....)

I'll post a couple more photos and maybe that can clear up Budgie's colour :)

It'll be great to know if everyone else agrees with Elly on Budgie's mutation :) As I'm very keen to know the "right" name for his colouration ^^

Once again, thank you for the fabulous welcome! :)
