I wonder why they don't just sell them all to a pet shop then, since he's convinced that it would make more money?

 

Trish it's a really tough one. I'm not sure what you should do. How long do the chicks need before they can leave the nest? If it's only a few more weeks you could just wait and hope that nobody else offers it in the meantime so that they have nowhere to move it to until after the chicks leave the nest. If someone else does buy it hopefully they will do their research and know how to look after them it is hard sometimes being caring! You can't rescue everything obviously, but in cases like these it's really hard to know where to draw the line.

 

 

These birds are just breeding and laying constantly so chances are they will have started again! I am thinking I will buy them tomorrow and get them healthy and stop them inbreeding anymore and then sell them off as pets myself to make the $200 back that I spend on them? As I am really only interested in show birds and their breeding but I'll rescue anything with a heartbeat! Also I'll do my darndest to keep the bubs alive.

 

*~UPDATE~* 10.43 P.M 10TH JAN Called about budgies and have decided to buy them and do as I suggested above. I'll keep everyone posted on here as to the progress. Of course I'll do it over the course of the next two weeks to give the babies the best chance possible.

So I was wondering would it be o.k. to collect and move the non~mating budgies this week? I was thinking of just leaving the chicks and parents and their logs and letting them go as long as possible? I have a seperate smaller aviary I can put these in but the parents aviary is still being built as I want to try and make it identical. Your comments and opinions are always very valuable to me and a great help so thanks in advance if I dont have a chanc to reply tomorrow!

Yes, that would be a very good idea, assuming you can work out exactly which are the non breedings ones. You wouldnt want to fully believe the previous owners as they may not realise the importance of keep mother/father/babies together as a unit and in fact may not know who is paired with who.

Well I really have myself deep in it this time, by far the biggest rescue that I have undertaken.

 

I drove down to see the man with the budgies. He insisted I pay today and either take them today or A.S.A.P.

I told him I would take the ones that I knew weren't the chicks mums and dads but he said, either take them all today or all next time but regardless to pay today. I was thinking what would guarantee me that they would still be there in a week or so? I have a temporary aviary that I have my daughters chickens in so I thought it best to put them all in there.

 

I caught all 25 budgies, plugged the holes in the hollow logs the babies are i with newspaper and drove home, an hours drive. I have just finished putting logs up and trying to make it as similar as I can to their previous aviary. Two hens have severe scaly face and even one appears to have it on her eyes??!! I hope so much that I dont have any casualties, wish me luck.

I am glad you have them and I hope all works out well for you with the parents and babies. In answer to the scalyface...Yes it can affect the eyes. Spot on ivermectin is needed in those cases but also beak trimming as it has gone a little too far. Worming them later would be a very good idea. Notice the hen with the humped back ??? she is about to lay an egg looks like. Hope she knows the way to her nest.

I know for sure that one lot are getting fed. The others were chirping very loudly and they are attracting attention of one particular budgie I noticed, but where they are situated I can't tell if they are being fed? I have only been home just about an hour. I will have to do something quick about this scaly face on the pictured hen I also noticed that she can't fly so have put her in a Hospital cage. There is another like her but not so bad. How do I treat a whole flock of 25 birds? Is it Ivermectin I have to get? I could look it up but am keeping one eye on the budgies too.

I hope it all turns out for the best. That scaley face doesn't look good at all and the beak looks very overgrown... I hope that the babies all survive, there are a lot of curious budgies around those logs though... You have a massive job on your hands and I hope it turns out well. if it doesn't at least you tried your best..

Ivermectin YES....and spot on every single bird in the flock or get the one for water. Our club sells it on the trade table.

In regard to beak trimming, I will have to try to find an Avian vet in either Adelaide or Melbourne 6-7 hours drive either way. I might ask my budgie club if they know of anyone and also about the Ivermectin.

Good luck Trish! You're doing an amazing job of keeping it all together, I don't know how you managed to talk to the man without wrapping your hands around his neck! It wont take long for the birds to realise they've won Budgie Lotto with you! :rofl:

I would of said to the bloke,heres $25,take it or leave it, The RSPCA will be around by tomorrow,if you are not happy.

I told a person last week at the market, to take the 3 he brought in to sell home & treat them,as I was organiseing for the RSPCA,to pay him a visit.You have to call there bluff.

Ah well, I just did what I could I'm sure there's a few ways I could have dealt with it but I just wanted to get in there and get them and start looking after them. The man was very arrogant, rude and unreasonable and he could easily have told me to nick off and that would get me no where and I HATE conflict! (I also had my kids with me!). Make love not war! He's the one that has to look in the mirror everyday and live with hiself for being a dingbat after all (putting it mildly)!

 

On a positive note, I can't wait to give them veggies and see what they do, as they have only ever had a seed diet! I have now removed the worst two hens to treat A.S.A.P. for what its worth, as they need their beaks trimmed and then I will treat them and the whole flock with Ivermectin, a forum member has kindly helped me out in getting some.

 

There are some beautiful grey and blue budgies in the mix, a little scrawny at present but I'll soon feed them up! Maybe I wont sell them off after all!

Good on you Trish. Urrrgh that man is so arrogant. He doesn't care at all. Even if you were buying something that wasn't alive, you think he would still give you the curtesy to pick it up when you liked!

I just gave them silverbeet and fresh corn on the cob, I don't think that they know what to do with them! I am also pleased to report that both sets of babies are being fed!!!!!!

I am worried about the chicks as their logs are so high off the ground, will they fall out? I need to discourage the breeding in there how do I do this? Should I be removing some of the non mating birds now?

If you can identify over the next few days, the non breeding ones or youngsters, and remove them as you can, to take the pressure off, it would be a good idea.

I agree with Kaz, if you can figure out who the parents are, and you have the room I would start removing the non breeding birds...
