Posted December 30, 200816 yr i decorate my house like crazy for xmas. lots of people come for a sticky. a family with two young boys arrived with two cockietels on there shoulders. it was 10pm. one bird was a youngster and the other was about two. both had there wings clipped. the mother said they clipped the wings so they wont fly far. is it usual to keep on clipping birds? snowy
December 30, 200816 yr I clip my birds wngs as required if I need them done. When my lori was a permanently indoor bird I kept her wings clipped as I was worried about one of my kids leaving a door open. It's personal preference really, you need to be very aware of how well they can get around though as somecan still fly quite well with their wings clipped.
December 30, 200816 yr Same as MB. I have my house bird clipped, obviously my avairy birds are not. I take Levi with me to work, in the car, sometimes shopping - I could never do that if he wasnt clipped. And yes it is very common for pet birds to be clipped.
December 30, 200816 yr I am the same - i have 2 inside cockatiels and an inside budgie - all three have clipped wings. If i didnt clip them they would be out the back door in an instant as my two young kids can never keep it closed. There is no harm to the bird having them constantly clipped. Often birds will bond closer to thier owner if they are clipped as they are reliant on you to get around :bliss:
December 30, 200816 yr Just a side note, my vet told me it was illegal for anyone outside of a vet to clip a birds wings, not that I think it will stop anyone. Clipping is a personal thing, i thought I would keep my King Parrots wings clipped now I am going to let them grow out
December 30, 200816 yr I also have my budgie's wings clipped, and maintain them myself... my reason was for his safety when flying around the house. He can still fly, but cannot get enough height or speed to fly into anything and do himself too much damage. I learnt the hard way with my previous budgie that budgies at full speed and loungeroom walls don't mix
December 30, 200816 yr Actually it's not that it is illegal for someone other than a vet to do it but it must be done under the advice of a vet, the vet himself doen't have to be the one that does it as long as he is 'guiding your actions' As someone that works in a pet shop you need to be careful with the legalities of this, as long as your vet is happy to endorse your actions in clipping wings then it is fine but if the vet doesn't agree with them then you could get into serious trouble. Here is the exact wording in the Code of Practice for the Housing of Caged Birds (Department of Primary Industries) Cage birds should not be wing clipped except for the health of the individual bird and on the advice of a veterinarian experienced in working with birds.

December 31, 200816 yr I haven't got any birds with clpped wings now, but none of them live in the house. I swear I've told my boys to keep the doors shut 1000 times but they still leave it open

January 1, 200916 yr I don't tend to clip my birds wings, even my inside ones. I like to let them fly around, but then I don't have kids. I do clip a bird on the occasion that I think it is being too flighty, cocky or scared of my hand as the bird can be hard to get back in its cage sometimes. I taught my self how to clip wings from reading books and looking at pictures. When I read your statement AV I was like "Oh no, I don't want to have to go to a vet to get it done all the time (or advised)," specially when I know how and have been doing it for years, then I went "wait a moment..." as I had obviously forgot what I've just been studying for the last few years  I've never seen that rule mentioned in all the books I've read on it. Maybe it doesn't apply to NZ.
January 1, 200916 yr I've never seen that rule mentioned in all the books I've read on it. Maybe it doesn't apply to NZ. well i know that it is highly alegle for pet shops to clip wings they can be fined up to 1000 dollors per bird although it still happens and they get away with it but if someone was to complain to the humain sosioty about a perticular place they do go out and first a warning is given then a fine then if it is reported again the petshops licine to keep birds can be taken from them ... true Edited January 2, 200916 yr by birdluv fixed quote
