Posted December 11, 200816 yr Maybe a silly question, but do you vaccuum in the same room as a bird cage, or do you move the cage to a different room before vaccuuming? I've been moving it so far, didn't want them to freak out and end up traumatised... but the cage isn't very mobile and there are 5 cats in the house which I can't keep an eye on while vaccuuming in a different room...
December 11, 200816 yr Author Excellent, I'll just let them get used to it then. That makes things easier:)
December 11, 200816 yr I vacuum around the cage (mine is up on a table) right next to them and they don't flinch. As Kaz said, they get used to it and actually enjoy the noise. Mine even try and compete with the noise!!! :hap:
December 11, 200816 yr I agree, Merlin talks to the vaacum he is not scared of it, it is interesting to find that the louder it is the better for a budgie because that is how it is in the wild, but with dogs or cats most take off for the hills lol .
December 11, 200816 yr The sound of the vacuum cleaner entices a lot of birds to take a bath in their water dishes....they will also compete 'volume-wise' with the vacuum. I've never had a problem with them being afraid of the vacuum cleaner, however a broom is another matter entirely!
December 12, 200816 yr Author The cats usually disappear as soon as they hear me getting the vaccuum cleaner ready, so I thought most animals would be scared of it, but good to know the budgies shouldn't be:)
December 22, 200816 yr wow, I'm glad you asked that question because I would have assumed that the noise would be scarey to a budgie...nice to know I won't have to tip toe around the budgie as much as I have to with my dog!
December 22, 200816 yr I vacuum in the avairy without a problem. Though I am always scared I will one day hear a thump and then the tube will be blocked.
December 22, 200816 yr I vacuum in the avairy without a problem. Though I am always scared I will one day hear a thump and then the tube will be blocked. Me too I have come close a couple of times
December 22, 200816 yr hehe... i imagine the same thing too... I use the vacuum cleaner to get the feathers and husks out of the corners of Smokey's cage... he just sits there and tweets at it at the top of his voice!
December 22, 200816 yr Ernie doesn't mind the noise at all. I was using the drill and angle grinder in the chook cage the other day while the chooks were in the yard and they all gathered around and watched me.
December 22, 200816 yr I have a piece of aviary mesh which I have folded to fit over the end of the vac nozzle because I'm paranoid
December 22, 200816 yr mb thats a great idea now they cant get umm sucked up i will use that idea one day
December 23, 200816 yr did that to one of my special gold fish once, suck him up in one of those suction cleaners, he didn't survive the horror . Poor little thing and I felt awful. BUT as for my birds I vaccum around them they get use to it.
December 30, 200816 yr My budgies are free flying in a bedroom..I use the vacuum cleaner in there to get rid of feathers. Usually they'll just start tweeting as loud as they can when it's on. They like noise
December 30, 200816 yr Cosmo absolutely LOVES the vacuum cleaner!!! Most noises he will start chortling along to, but the vacuum cleaner is clearly one of his favourites. He also likes running water and rustling plastic bags, but I think the vacuum beats both of those.
