Posted September 9, 200816 yr Yes, you read it right. It was Saturday and I noticed he was very quiet all day. By evening he had white sloppy poos and no black in them which indicated he had stopped eating. I though OH here we go again what have I done wrong. I only lost Pretty about a year and 1/2 ago. I warmed up the room and kept him quiet. I didn't know if he would pull through the night and my husband checked up on him and said he was okay but very quiet. He showed no signs of illness other then listness and white sloppy poos. In the morning, I pm'd a couple of members on the forum, Kaz and Libby to see what I could do. It was Sunday and there are no avian vet's open and the ER vets are only good for dogs and cats. I did some deduction and realized that I needed to get him to eat so I took him out and I gave him millet he started to eat it and then his poo's turned black and sloppy so then I changed the water often and enticed him to drink with splashing my fingers it worked but took awhile. When he feels good he is always up for a good splash with me. By afternoon we had wet poos but white/black and he did take a bath in the afternoon by himself but he was still very quiet. I kept feeding him millet and getting him to drink. I looked for the raspberry cordial but there was nothing and we decided to try I believe the apple juice that I say Neat suggested but by evening he seems 80% better. He sang a bit, he was perching on his swing now and his poo's were normal. By Monday morning he was 95% better and I decided along with talking with Kaz that he probably didn't need an avian vet. SO the deduction what happened? I gota different BIRD SEED, it looked the same, but it was a different brand and for some reason he didn't touch it at all. I noticed that on Sunday but I didn't think it could have been the food. Thank goodness I saw the symptoms and realized what was going on he would have starved to death. Today he has his regular bird seed but for some reason he has gone on strike because I spoiled him? He refused to eat anything but millet now so for now I am going with it, offering his seed in the same bowl putting some millet in it and I hope it catches on for now I just want to make sure he is okay. I wanted to share this important story with you. BIRDS will Starve themselves!!
September 9, 200816 yr That's hum... Wow. They're spoiled little picky brats, aren't they. Hope he'll be better now! That was close.
September 9, 200816 yr I was ready to start crying when i read the tittle ... I am sooo glad that you seen the signs and KNOW YOUR POO! Thank God that it is all okay now, I hope he starts eating his seed again and not just the millet
September 9, 200816 yr I am so glad that Merlin is doing better and i have also found that budgies will starve themselves.
September 9, 200816 yr Author Neat, I was shaking, remember the time when I lost Pretty and thought how can this happen to me. He hasn't touched anything but millet but he is full of energy tsk tsk....I think he will come around. Everything thank you for your kind words. Edited September 9, 200816 yr by Elly

September 9, 200816 yr Oh my! My heart skipped a beat when I saw the subject of your post...not the handsome Merlin! Glad to hear he has picked up and is looking himself again!
September 9, 200816 yr I am so very glad the outcome was so positive. We were all scared there for awhile. But keen observations by Elly and working through the "diagnosis" helped. I am just so grateful it turned around as it could so very easily been a lot worse.
September 9, 200816 yr OH WOW, I know that alot of people have said about changing seed over but sometimes you think your covered but your not. The feed store near me rang me to tell me that they are changing their mix of Budgie seed so I got a bag and am mixing 50/50 so they guys get use to it. I am so glad you saw what was going on and worked out what to do. big hugs to you both!
September 9, 200816 yr Author thank you AV, this also forced a molt on him too he has feathers everywhere!
September 10, 200816 yr thank you AV, this also forced a molt on him too he has feathers everywhere! I thought that would happen
September 10, 200816 yr Author You were right Kaz, it is everywhere the little down feathers not the ones on his head so that is why I am not forcing an issue with the millet, I just want to keep him eating period at this point, I am also still keeping the room very warm as tonight is a cold night but the days are still warm but I want to keep him like he is in a hospital cage for a few more days so he is less stressed.

September 10, 200816 yr thank you AV, this also forced a molt on him too he has feathers everywhere! I thought that would happen I just came back to post that you should watch out for this and you beat me to it. Some of my guys are starting to go into molt and they are in the breeding cages due to the food change grrrrr I am just glad that Merlin has such a great mum!
September 10, 200816 yr At the time Merlin was sick and the change of food was mentioned I said to Elly about the change of food would force a moult. Didnt take long. He will be at a low ebb right now, so tender loving care......time to spoil him more than usual :budgiedance:
September 10, 200816 yr Author AV thank you :budgiedance: Kaz, I think right after I mentioned the food change I said he shook off all these feathers and now am surprised he is not bald that is why I am just going to do alot of tender loving care, eat what he wants and warmth.
September 10, 200816 yr Glad to hear you worked out the problem and he is on the road to recovery :budgiedance: *hugs*
September 10, 200816 yr Thank you Elly for your post. I put my little ones out into their aviary last week but yesterday noticed some runny bums and lo and behold white poos. I didn't know what that meant till I read your post. Happily I've caught them up and put them back inside and to my delight their tucking into their food now. I guess they just weren't quite ready for outside yet, I'll give it a few days and try it again soon.
September 10, 200816 yr Thanks for posting this Elly, and I'm so pleased he is doing much better. I hope he continues to improve and is back to his usual seed and veggie eating self in no time! :budgiedance:
