My 2 boys in primary school have their school concert in a couple of weeks. Forms came home last night for the allocation of tickets. All tickets are $12 each regardless of age (my youngest is 3) and I have to pay for the boys that are in the concert as well as they need to be seated after their performance - this means it is going to cost us $84 to attend the concert.

Do you think this is a fair price or do you think it is excessive?

It does sound horrendous doesnt it ? They should have thought ahead to family passes and better deals for those participating.

I have heard so many people complain about the price of school concert tickets!!!

Many parents who have put their own money, blood, sweat and tears into costumes and set creation etc have still be expected to pay admission. Grrrrr So frustrating!!

Paying $12 for a under school age child, and the children who are participating in the concert sounds unfair to me.

I hope you can work something out.

That does not seem right to me, why do they feel they need to charge at all. My kids attend a private school and there school concert is on this month and the entry fee is a donation.

That sounds very unfair, especially to pay for your children who are in the play. That is like the school going "Well we have 105 children in the concert, that's 12 dollars each, so that's $1260 ensured!!" That's not fair. They are sorta charging you and your kids for putting all that hard work in. With out the children and parents helping they wouldn't have a concert. That made me grumpy.

Rally around and see what the other parents think. If lots of you are upset then the school should get the idea.

Tell them That your youngest is 3 and will sit on your lap ...

THIS IS A JOKE MATE !!! WHY CHARGE THAT MUCH TO SEE YOUR KIDS PERFORM ..

I am peeved .. Sorry okay , I have calmed down now ... okay ask the organiser if you can have a Family ticket

and that you find the price too expensive also that fact that your 2 boys are in the concert you should have to pay for them ? Where is being held at the opera house :)

Why too much to pay

The more I have thought about it today the angrier I have gotten and decided I am going to the school office when I pick the boys up tonight :)

Wow, that's just bizarre. I can't believe that when the school concert or whatever committe got together to to discuss ticketing etc not one of them thought that the system that they had come up with was flawed... hmm. How odd! It seems so obviously stupid and no-one on the organising committee noticed! Iam sure there are plenty of other non-committee parents at the school who noticed!!!!!!!

that does sound abit harsh, the last one I went to for my little brother and sister was $5 each and I have never heard of them charging for the kids that are in the concert.

okay !!!!

So what did the school say ... I am sooo eager to find out ! I hope that they change their minds about the pricing

WOW we don't pay for school concerts here :) I think that is outragous and I would be upset too.

Yeah... what did they say?

That is so NOT cool... A primary school concert, paying for the kids in the concert, and for your 3 year old???????? That is BULL!!! I'd be kicking up a very BIG fuss and I'd imagine many other would feel the same!!! Good luck with that...

P.S.... I'm very crafty and good with a paint brush and posters. I don't live far from you and can form a picket line in under an hour... and clothes are optional... :hap:  :) :hap:

I used to help out with plays put on by the scouts, they were done at a theatre which had to be hired, lighting equipment had to be hired and some people had to be paid for things that couldn't be done 'in house' and yet that is still more expensive than what we used to charge. Sounds like the school is just out fo a buck to me :P

I worked in schools for 20 years and never once have i known the school to charge for the students that where performing it seem to me to be a very greedy tactic on the schools part

This is a clean and cut case that the P & C haven't done their job right!!!

I really hope that they see your ( OUR LOL ) side of things and change their mind

So I went into the office last night to complain and apparently there have only been 3 other mothers to do so as well (out of 420 students) :D

The school council set the prices and they have been increased this year because so many parents haven't been paying the voluntary fees (the concert is held every 2 years and the last time it was $8 a ticket). They do hire a hall (don't know why when they have a stadium at school that would be big enough) Parents do the lighting etc.

Performers ticket prices have been changed to $6 instead of $12 and due to the high interest in tickets they have had to limit families to 4 tickets - which is not enough for us as there is 7 of us.

So I started on the fact that my 3 year old would sit on my knee and didn't need a seat and my oldest is in a wheelchair therefore he wouldn't need a seat as he had his own :P - then they didn't think that there would be enough room in the isle for his chair :D

Turns out my grade 6 boy isn't in the concert he is helping back stage and my grade 3 boy doesn't even want to be in the concert because his grade is being super heroes and he doesn't want to wear the tights (he bought a note home last night saying that all super hero costumes have to be hired as they want them all the same no home made ones. A list of costumes shops was on the note and they cost approximately $30 to hire :D ).

That was the last straw WE ARE NOT GOING!!! :D Kids don't care either way so the school can go and jump.

It sounds like the school is being unreasonable, i would pull out too if i had to spend lots of money on a school concert. The school my kids attend do whatever they can to keep cost down for parents.

Good on you Denise, organise a boycott :D

Don't know if that would do any good, there would only be me and 3 other mothers that complained there. I spoke with several other mothers this morning and they didn't seem to think it was expensive or anything wrong with the costs etc.

Maybe I'm just a tight ar*e :D

No I think that is a large amount to have to pay. Also I did not think that they could say no to a wheelchair? My Dad has a seeing eye dog and theatres have to accommodate her so they should have to accommodate a wheelchair. Also limiting the tickets to X per family is a joke. One of the kids that I look after has a school play and they did say direct family only (ie mum dad brothers and sisters) but ran into an issue with one family who is a family of 13 kids! (mum came to the marriage with 7 and dad came to the marriage with 6) But they still mananaged to fit them all in and give them a dicount to make sure they all got to come and see.

I do think they are asking alot and if the kids do not want to be in it then don't make them is my theory.

Also I would hate to have twins in that group.

2 x performace tickets = $12

2 x parents tickets = $24

2 x superhero costumes = $60

Grand total of $96 and what is you have other kids? Most hire shops charge you to clean the costumes which would be another $40 on top of that. It really does add up. I would balk at that as well so don't think it is only you.

I think there is something to be said for a bunch of kids dressed in red trackies with blue undies over the top :D When I was with the scouts our performances always looked fantastic (we even got asked to perform at the Arts Centre one year!) but all the costumes were home made and all the work was shared around.

OMG!!!! Are you saving that your son in the wheel chair was DENIED!!!!!!!!!!

okay NOW THAT HAS GONE TOO FAR! THAT IS DISCRIMINATION!!!!

They are lucky that I am not a mother at that school -

I would be calling the education department! - Speaking to the P & C committee ..

See the hard thing is your Boys are apart of it - and not going will cause them to be upset and etc ..

Are you able to speak to the principal? And see if something can be worked out ....
