I am having a problem with miner birds flying around the aviary and upsetting the budgies. I have a full tin roof but they have taken to sitting on the roof and flying across the wire at the front.Does anyone have any ideas of how you can deter other birds from hanging around or it is something you just have to put up with?

I dont have any problems with wild birds. Just the odd sparrow and pigeon that visit the back yard - which is a shame, i miss my wild birds

 

Can you hang old CD's around the aviary?? I see a lot of people using CD's to keep birds off their fruit trees.

You can buy stretchy black plastic bird netting from the hardware store. You can stretch some out front of your aviary to keep wild birds further away.

Bunnings carry it Deb. You can attach it to a wooden post with a smaller wooden strip along the post to hold the mesh down. Place the wooden post on the ground about 2-3 feet out from your aviary and attach the rest at the top of the aviary...if it works out that way for you. BUT the bird netting stretches easily and you wont need a lot of it.

The bigger birds that land on top of my husbands aviary are after baby birds in nests in the hibiscus bushes around our fishpond and his aviary. Quite often they succeed in taking these baby birds from the nests

Nah my dogs keep the nasties away- they hate crows with a passion if a hawk so much as flies within 100m they wont stop staring at the sky til its gone. They were acting like idiots a while back and after looking really well I noticed a spot in the sky miles up- it was a pelican. Muddies / Magpie larks get a good bollocking if I'm out there and doves are permissable but parrots and stuff are fine ..I cant work them out but it seems to work. IT just llooks odd seeing my dog staring at the sky or in a tree

Your left over seeds - sprinkle them or throw them away fromyour avairy

Wild birds are in their nest breeding I am looking forward to the Cocky's and etc in the next month or so

my birds are used to the cat watching them, sleeping on top of their aviaries or on the shelf thats next to an aviary. she doesnt worry about the birds and there are no wild birds around my aviaries.

mice on the otherhand only come out at night when the cat's inside

We have the exact same problem. The noisy miners have been really aggressive, swooping the aviary and harassing the budgies. A few weeks ago we had a budgie who was very healthy and happy one minute and we went outside half an hour later to find him dead on the floor of the cage with one eye poked out. We didn't see what happened but I totally blame the miners.

 

We've started putting the cat bowl near the aviary so that the cat scares away the miners. I also do what AV does and squirt them every time I see them. And I'm also thinking of buying some wire mesh to hand as a curtain around the aviary to provide an additional barrier. I hate those miners!

With the CD's, would that not also affect the budgies?

Yes, I had a problem with miners, cockatoos and parrots and the shade cloth really did the trick.

My cats always got a hard time from the miner birds. One was white all over and couldn't hide anywhere... she'd be curled up asleep in the long grass and the wretched miners would screech adn swoop at her... they're so aggressive, not even our cats were safe from their attacks!

One method I found was that you can chase them by training your dog to get rid of large birds. Or you can use a spray repellent, but don't know if it is harmful to birds and there should be no scientific evidence to prove that they are effective. I would recommend building a physical barrier bird net or barbed wire, etc., which may work. These methods are all found online, and I don't know if we can build a bird house and provide food, then they will not bother us.
