Posted August 5, 200816 yr Mango our little yellow budgie we think was bitten by a female red back spider. We're not sure what to do as it's 6pm and all the vets will be closed. Is there anything anyone can suggest?
August 5, 200816 yr Keep phoning all the vets you can think of. They often have an emergency number and there are some vet hospitals that work all hours.
August 5, 200816 yr Where are you located? Most larger cities have atleast one after hours emergency clinic
August 5, 200816 yr UPDATES??????? Redback venom is nasty, especially to a little bird..... Hope you find a vet fast Edited August 5, 200816 yr by **Liv**
August 5, 200816 yr Author Just got off the phone to a vet, they said not to bring him in and to keep him warm and in a dark place. The vet said all that they could do was give an anti inflammatory and that it often stresses the bird.. so for now just let him sleep because most of the time they're fine. I really hope he's okay.
August 5, 200816 yr Have you got any Camomile Tea???Make a 20mls solution up and give to it warm! it is a natural aniti inflamatory!!!!Min there are Animal hospitals you can go tooMy thoughts and prayers are with you right now!
August 5, 200816 yr Author Mango seems okay. He's not fluffed up or shaking or anything just yawns. I will have a look at the tea. I'm just not sure If I should be giving him anything. Mango is the more flighty of the two birds and still won't let us near him. I'm afraid i'll stress him more. I could try putting it in their drinking water though.
August 5, 200816 yr I am glad he is doing better, just a question how did you know it was a spider that bite him?
August 5, 200816 yr Author Did you see the spider!!!! yes. Biggest red back we had ever seen. About the size of a pea.
August 6, 200816 yr Author Fine! ..Maybe he didn't get bitten.. just crawled on. He was scratching the place the spider was on him like crazy afterwards though.. so here's hoping.
August 6, 200816 yr If he is still alive ( I AM HOPING) then I am sure that he was scratching cause he got the hebbe geppes. He would have died rather quickly as there isnt alot of blood in a budgie ( so i have been told) and the poision would take next to n o time to travel thru him
August 6, 200816 yr Red backs can kill small lizards and critters (even humans ), so i think your boy is going to be just fine now. He couldn't have been bitten - the nurotoxin would have hit him very quickly if it had. Edited August 6, 200816 yr by **Liv**
August 6, 200816 yr I know there is one type of common poisonous spider that is only poisonous to humans and other primates, but not to other animals. Not sure what though.
August 6, 200816 yr Author I am so glad. I thought the same as well. So I checked up on him at 3 am :X. He seems to be fine. Chasing the other bird around the cage and squabbling over millet.
August 6, 200816 yr Wow, that's scares like that that makes me happy I live somewhere where there isn't bad spiders. I mean, spiders are terrible and I hate them and I want them all dead but at least they don't bite you around here! They just make me screech.
