Posted July 30, 200816 yr I had a awful experience with Roxy tonight. I have a open plan house so when she is out for free fly time she usually flies all around the house and i try to keep a eye on where she is. She decided to go into the kitchen and when i went to find her it took me a while to find her. She somehow went down the side of the fridge and got herself wedged between the fridge and wall. It was so upsetting. I could not move the fridge because i was worried i would squash her and the gap is too small for my hand to fit. My hubby got the feather duster because it was soft and we had to gentle pull her out hoping we would not hurt her. We got her out and she is fine but it scared me heaps and now i am thinking i should clip her wings to keep her safe.
July 30, 200816 yr Oh my gosh, you know we have the same thing with our frig, Tim was always worried about Pretty falling down there too, we put a piece of wood there to cover the gap. Glad all is okay.

July 30, 200816 yr I have had the same issue but down the back of bookshelves. Lucky that the few times they have gotten stuck it been the good sense to be stuck between the bookshelf and an unused door so some moving of furtinue to get to the door from the other side and open it and get the bird... scarey feeling. Glad it all worked out.
July 30, 200816 yr That's why I keep my birds's wings clipped. Yea, it restricts them but let's face it: a house's designed for humans walking around in it, not a bird flight. It's full of small places and traps where they can get stuck. Glad she's okay.
July 30, 200816 yr That's happened to me with George and he didn't move, and I thought I'd killed him I was scared to death, But I'm glad she's okay
July 30, 200816 yr Ohhhhh Deb i am soooo glad that tshe is okay!!! - Elly that is a great idea with the wood
July 30, 200816 yr Author My other 2 housebirds have their wings clipped but Roxy is only 7 weeks old and still learning the art of flying and i do not like to clip their wings until they have learnt to fly properly.
July 30, 200816 yr So pleased she is okay Deb!! my house is open plan too and i keep mine clipped all the time too. It freaks me out with all the trouble they can get into You could clip Roxy's wings a little, just to stop her getting so much height.

I might do that Liv, my hubby said i cannot put wood onto of the fridge because it would overheat from the hot air from the back of the fridge not being able to escape.
July 31, 200816 yr It is scary when something like that happens, they always seem to find the worst places to get stuck, i have a huge water heater in my laundry and the first evening I got my new girls Amelia escaped and managed to fall down the one corner she couldn't get out of, I had no torch to see her, i had to get a ladder to get over the top of the heater and ended up taping my fish net to a stick and fishing her out, I was scared to death, she was terified but luckly we have recovered and the damn hole has been covered up.
July 31, 200816 yr My budgie wound up down the back of the piano a couple of times so now I just keep it pulled out as far as is practicle.
July 31, 200816 yr Maybe you could try some mesh screen to block the gap, that way the fridge is still ventilated and Roxy can't get stuck.
August 1, 200816 yr glad she is fine. that has happen to me twice with Hobbes and he was clipped at the time, he got behind my old dresser. luckily l seen him fly there and l quickly moved the dresser and got him out. l do not have the dresser anymore, l threw it out.
