Posted June 6, 200817 yr Hi All, Smokey has been with us for around 6 weeks now, and is growing up very quickly (his cere is now a purply shade of blue, and his forehead lines are receding...). Over the weeks, we have been popping different veggies and greens in his cage, to work out which ones tickle his fancy. But he doesn't seem to like any of them. He's had bunches of different sprouts (alphalpha and snow pea sproouts) which my last budgie used to go nuts over, but has shown no interest. We've also been putting veggie kebabs into his cage, with carrot, broccoli, celery tops etc... he doesn't even nibble on the leafy bits! I have just this week discovered he is enjoying a sprig of gum leaves. Is shredding and nibbling on leaves enough green stuff for my budgie's diet, or should we continue testing out different veggies to try to find something he will eat? June 6, 200817 yr Just keep putting them in there, he'll get the idea eventually. I put sprigs of celery leaves in my nestboxes when the chicks start to pick so they get used to it from early on but if they haven't had it before they often take a while to warm up to the idea.
June 6, 200817 yr Just keep at it. You'll find he will eat them eventually. Some budgies take longer than others, but their curiosity usually gets the better of them. Try varying the way you serve them, sprinkle seed on top of them, cut them up, grate them, on a cabab (as you've already done). Mine also love fresh corn on the cob. You'll have to be willing to go through a far amount of food, so maybe don't offer to much at a time. Good luck and keep us posted.
June 10, 200817 yr I now have some more ideas on how to get Fergie to eat his greens! I like the kebab idea as he likes his 'hanging' toys...he sits on one and head butts another!
June 10, 200817 yr I like to hang leafy greens from the cage bars and roof. Fruits and carrot I poke through the bars and pegs to the bars
