In addition to my budgie children, I also have three feline children, and I know they all love me very much because they often leave lovely little gifts at my front door near their food bowl. Usually it will be a parcel of half eaten mouse, a gecko, or occasionally a large bush rat, or maybe even an unfortunate mynah bird. But tonight they decided to leave a particularly delightful and special gift for me at the front door - very slithery and still alive gift...

 

I'm seriously not into reptiles, much less large, legless, and potentially poisonous ones!

But I'm glad my cats caught it before it ate my budgies.

WOW, I have had dogs only all my life and they have saved my kids twice from Red belly's I've never heard of a cat

getting a snake? and still being alive... WOW ....Oh & sorry they left it on your front door step, that would have been scary

Was it a python or venomous kind? I have heard of cases where cats brought small Black snakes into the house that were still alive.

I didn't like it when the mice were still alive! Last cat we had knew we wouldn't let her in if she had a "gift" for us. She got smart and would put it on the ground with her paw holding it down. We'd open the door for her (yes boss cat, anything you want boss cat) she'd quickly bend down grab the gift and tear into the lounge room and drop her gift at our feet to the quick shreiks of panic from some family members (especially if the gifts were live cockroaches) . . .

Hehe... it is funny in a way, isn't it... Our cats were the same... they are always so proud of their handiwork... If they were human children they would present it to you with the burning anticipation of you sticking it on the fridge! Unfortunately, live snakes aren't particularly appealing kitchen fridge displays!

The best one I have had was an almighty racket at about 3am which consisted of lots of squealing accompanied by the cat growling and stampeding through the hose at high speed. Thinkig it was a possum or something I raced out of bed switching lights on in a mad panic until I found my cat sitting calmly in the family room looking very casual! On closer inspection I discovered a half grown rat clinging desperately at thetop of my back wire door loking like it definately regretted the decision to investigate my accidentally left ajar laundry door. I somehow managed to slide the backdoor open without it jumping onto me and shooed it outside using the broom!

 

All the while with the cat looking at me as if to say "What, it wasn't me, I didn't do anything, your going crazy mum"

Well, the snake was still alive last night but it was a bit mangled with quite a few cat tooth sized puncture wounds up and down it's body so I wasn't sure it was going to make it. So with the help of my housemate (also, not into reptiles), and the broom and pitchfork with very, very long handles, we carefully contained the still alive but somewhat stunned snake and placed it in a bucket in a warm place overnight. It was still alive this morning so I called my local snake catcher/registered wildlife carer who picked it up. He just took one look at it in the bucket and then stuck his hand in and picked it up... Scared the life out of me because I was standing within range of it when he took it out of the bucket and it squirmed around. Yikes! I'm seriously not into reptiles. (It's kind of like an Indiana Jones issue that I have with snakes.) He said it was a water snake of some kind and was not venomous and took it to nurse it back to health so it can go on eating more canetoads and rodents. Yay, snakes have good points too, just not on my front doorstep thanks kitty. The cat responsible for catching it was a stray kitten that adopted me several years ago, and I am quite sure he is somewhat feral, but a lovely cat nonetheless. I sleep better knowing he is on budgie protection patrol, but I think I would prefer if he limited his gifts to rodents.
