Budgie On Heat. Help Please

Hey Everyone,

I have a Male. He's about 8 months old.

At the moment, he is trying to mate with everything and has become a little aggressive.

What should I do? I don't enjoy this behaviour

Should i borrow him a girlfriend??

I don’t think there is much you can do, even when they are in aviaries with hundreds of other Budgie they will mate with other things, they are just little mating [breeding] machines, it’s basically just their nature.

A mate will at least give him an interest & occupy his time, but then they may wish to breed.

Perhaps if he has some toys that he is overly aggressive of, remove those. Rearrange his cage and see if the aggressiveness disperses. A male budgie will constantly flirt with anything, animate or not. It is one of my favourite qualities about them and I find it quite endearing.

Budgies don't have heat cycles. By the sound of his age (8months) he is going through puberty. He will stay pretty flirty for his whole life, but will settle down when he reaches adult hood. Getting a female won't fix it, he'll still flirt with anything. My boys have numerous females and they will even flirt with my nose!!! there is no stopping them lol

Thanks for the replies.

He does have a favorite toy in his cage but he only goes in his cage to eat or at night to sleep. There aren't any mirrors either. It's when he's out that he does it. The rest of the time he flys around the house. Hopefully it is just puberty. He actually tried to mate with my hand. Had the whole wing thing going on!!!

Guess i'll just let him be who he is, a randy teenager lol

Thanks

Hello and welcome

I would also reduce the amount of light he has during the day - use a dark cloth to cover his cage and give him at around 12-13 hours of darkness each night - it will feel more like winter and might reduce his hormones a bit.

I guess he probably doesn't sleep as much as he could. Sometimes he doesn't go in his cage at night so he's awake at first light. I dont much like keeping him looked up for long. I'll give it a try and see how he goes.

Thanks heaps.

Birds can get very cranky if they don't get enough sleep :)

For his own safety, he should always be caged over night and when you are out

Hi and welcome to the forum. I agree with comments above. He should have a set bedtime, when he is put back in his cage and covered up for the night... and also a time in the morning where he is uncovered and let out. Like children... they need their sleep (even if they don't want to go to bed :P ). I also think when he matures a little, he will calm down.

Thankyou again everybody!

You've been a great help. I'll give him a proper bedtime and about 12 hours of dark.

When I got him, he was very sick. Thanks to this forum, i was able to get the advice on how to nurse him back to help. Some thought he wouldn't make it.

Have a great week all, and thanks for all your help

You have been very good advice, the best advice I do agree with is ensuring he is getting 10-12 hours of covered cage sleep time this is very important when birds get hormonal, you can even increase the cover for 14 hours for the next week to calm down the behavior, it is really more frustrating for him then anything and there are things you can do about it to change the behavior the one above is the best start, getting a mate is not a solution as there are many unwanted birds out there like there are cats and dogs and simply giving them a mate to blow of a sexual frustration is not right in my eyes (this is my personal opinion), breeding any type of pet (or animal that we own) should not be taken light because there can be complications and then there are babies.

I like keeping a tight schedule with all my pets. It's bed time at 10 and up at 7 (Dog included) And it's not rare that when bed time comes my birds are already in their respective cages starting to nap (Though they can also be around playing.)

I think all animals need a steady lights out schedule.

My male budgie does this, too. I've been told by others this is quite common (after strenuous teasing about my nail polish, etc.) At first it bothered me but now, to be quite honest, it doesn't.

Sorry couldn't help but laugh that the bird was on heat hehe ..... I too have a new male TCB (texas Clearbody) that is Breeding condition and having his fun on all the perches pitty he isn't having fun with the Albino hen in there cage
