Very Sad Story

It took me about a week after I found out to share this with you because I am so digusted and it was a family relative that did this unknowningly because they chose (as many do) not to inform themselves or take good advice.

I found out from my MIL that a family member had bought 2 budgies for the 2 little girls. Of course my first instinct was OH BROTHER, they can't really control the kids like they need 2 birds. I just knew it was doomed from day 1 (gut feeling). You know that feeling or know those people in your lives right?

Anyways, I had not heard anything about the 2 budgies over the last 6 months so when I took Merlin there MIL so happened to tell me that this family had put the 2 budgies in a cage, hung it from the ceiling in the kitchen and within 2 weeks of each other both birds dropped over dead.

The family member concluded that it must have gotten too hot in the kitchen and she roasted them. I turned around and informed MIL that was not the case since budgies come from AU that there was more to why these 2 budgies suffered this fate.

Fumes in the kitchen are fatal to budgies, the tephlon (that was used for a fact), the fumes from cooking, she in fact used air fresheners, strong cleaning products etc...

They died of toxic fumes. When you purchase a budgies please do take it seriously that fumes can and are very harmful to budgies and don't keep them anywhere in or near the kitchen when you are cooking. I used to have Pretty in the kitchen but ONLY when we were done eating and all the fumes were gone.

A very sad story indeed and I wanted to share so others can be aware.

That's a really sad story :D

It's a great warning for those who keep birds inside :(

That's so sad. Thanks for sharing and I hope people take notice of this 'unknown' killer.

B):D

How can people be so...GAH they're is no words to describe the horrible way those poor things died!

At least they are away from the torture!

RIP little buddies

That is so sad :budgiedance: I wish they'd make people take a simple test about animal care before they're allowed to buy a pet.

Don't forget that the laundry is also a bad place for a bird, there are lots of toxic fumes and powders that are extremely harmful.

I agree. The crazy thing is this site is pretty much the first site that pops up no matter what you search for in regards to budgies on the net... It is so simple for people to do a little research before buying their budgies yet no one does. I just wish that people would be smarter when they went shopping... Those forms that we have on the site (can't remember what they were called now or which thread) are great. You have to sit there and really question yourself... why am I getting budgies, will I pay the vet bills, can I afford the upkeep of the budgies... etc. etc. I was tempted to take it to the petshop and say hand this to every person that comes into your store to buy a budgie...

It really applies to all pets though, not just budgies. How many animals are in shelters because they were a christmas or birthday present...

Indz, I agree I think they would have been more in torture alive in that situation (I know that is horrible to say out loud).

Jimmy, I agree but these type of people impulse buy because their kids want it and don't go futher then that. Saddly they are members of my family and they think I am NUTS with Merlin.

:D Thats a sad story.. I just don't get why people would even RISK it if they were unsure to begin with.. I'm unsure on a lot of things so Ive simply just eliminated them from the scene.. We don't cook with Teflon anymore, We don't use cleaning chemicals except for vinegar but mostly just water, Candles are banned from the ENTIRE house, ALL Sprays and perfumes are banned (Laughing out loud) .. Oh only allowed to put deodorant on in the bathroom with the exhaust fan ON.. almost everything i use to do involved something stinky (candles, incense, mosquito coils, fly spray, Cleaning products even Makeup especially Kohl eyeliners that contain traces of lead) Its ALL GONE all ornaments even that i was unsure about, If i thought it may contain pewter basically anything that may have lead or zinc.. Its all gone.. :D and I know I'm doing everything possible to keep my babies safe.. I wish more people would take a little more thought and follow, Its really not Rocket Science **Sigh

Thank you for posting the story, its an invaluable lesson RIP lil budgies, I'm upset you suffered so much for someones stupidity :)

Jimmy, I'm with you, but the petshops would never agree to something that may dissuade people from a sale :) Their job is to get the animal out of the store, and everything after that is not their responsibility.

I hate the impulse-buy nature of society, and pet stores making it worse by putting cute little animals in places whre it's easy to just get rid of them and not care what happens after that. Sure the shop employees may be there because they like animals, but in the end it is a business and the management pays them to sell. So many of those gift animals end up in shelters. The worst thing is that people seem to think that birds, since they cost less, are somehow worth less, feel less pain etc. :D

Una, I tried explaining all that to my friend who looked after Milly for a month. His mum looked at me like I was nuts! An overprotective crazy bird nut. Luckily since we are friends he took me seriously and did everything I told him. But I wish people would just do a bit of research first before they buy an animal on impulse. With the internet these days, there is just no excuse. Myself, I'm terrified of doing something wrong. I've forced mself to sit on my hands for six months now and not buy myself a tiel - I'm just not ready, I know that, no matter how much I want one. (I really want one!!)

Elly, it's awful when it's your own family - I have a similiar story, but it goes a little off topic.

Family member of mine, my mum told me that they got birds for the kids to look after, simply because the kids wanted one, and my heart just sank and sank. These are the same kids who poke sticks at my budgies and pick fruit from our garden to throw at my chickens. I am so FURIOUS and stressed out every time they come over and their parents say "Kids will be kids!". I have lost my temper and yelled at them before but of course it isn't right to try and discpline someone else's kids. I know it isn't really their fault, that children don't understand these things but I wish their parents would try to teach them some values about animal life. Of course.. that's impossible when you don't have any. My mum and I both wish that their parents would actually try to do something to at least control their children and respect someone else's wishes. I just take my budgies up to my room and lock the chickens in their coop now. It doesn't stop the children throwing rocks at the coop, but at least they can't be injured physically.

In any case - they fed the canaries seed of course and were so ignorant about it that they just assumed that the birds hadn't eaten all the seed, but it was all husks! :sob: It was doomed from the start, they just had no idea about anything to do with animals - just give it food and water. And they couldn't even do that right. I bet the parents just shrugged and thought, "I'm glad that's over." I hear they wany a puppy next :D

that is exactly this situation sounds like the same people, and my mil thinks I am nuts too but she has listened to a point. She tried to grab Merlin so they could clean out the bottom of the cage well I wish she would have called me she said he is mad at her and won't talk or perch on her finger now. He is not mad he is now scared and she lost his trust, he will be home soon, but I want to ensure he will be safe here from the paint fumes. PEOPLE.

Chryso, i know it feels yuck to discipline other people's kids, but if they are doing this sort of stuff, you have every right to discipline them. The kids will then learn to respect you (hopefully). If they are on your property you have every right to discipline them. You would tell off an adult who was doing the same wouldn't you? Those kids have to learn from somewhere and they certainly aren't going to learn from their parents.

Sailor, I know, I do tell them off when I see them do it.. I even try reasoning. These kids are terrible... or maybe their parents are... they just run amok doing what they want, especially when our backs are turned. I know this because I confiscated bits of pipe off them once (they were sword fighting dangerously). They were straight back at it with planks of wood as soon as I went inside, and put them down if I went out there. Worse yet they swear at me when I turn around! I am in no position to be constantly at it with them. You should have seen them at my brother's wedding  So I just take away their ability (and the privelege) of interacting with my pets. When they are older and a little more understanding I will be educating them (there is also a language barrier at the moment). Unfortunately I am the odd one out in my family for caring about animals.

As for adults.. in my family it is an 'elders know best' system. My parents are a little more sensitive to my protestations but they are still pretty rooted in a society where even feeding yourself was difficult, your own wellbeing is much more important than an animal's.

It's so frustrating. I don't know what else I can do.

Poor thing. They sound like absolute terrors. I don't know much more to say. Anyone else have advice?

this is what I do with Merlin, I put him away in a different room period. Other ways was I turned the cage around so they can't open it too. Covering doesn't help because they just peek under the cover. So to protect my baby I put him aways he doesn't need to socialize with terrors that are going to break his trust for humans.

:) Im afraid to say it but id be setting strictly down with the parents "MY House.. MY RULES! and if you are unhappy about that, Leave and come back when your children have manners" hahaaa. I dont think id hesitate in telling them off when it comes to the welfare of other living things, and yeah if the parents didnt stand beside me, id be telling them all to get nicked :D

Maybe im just a tough old boot :D

You would think that the parents would care if they knew that the birds health was at risk... I'm sure you've probably already tried explaining that to them though... :) Sorry I don't really have any advice when talking to family on these issues... It's never nice to have family disputes.

l totally understand what you guys go through.

when l have small visitors l always have my pets locked in my room. l only let them see my pets when l'm around to supervise them. you would think that the parents would be doing the supervising and not me
