Posted March 25, 200817 yr Opal really enjoys sitting on the window sill and looking outside but the problem is that she also really enjoys chewing the wood moulding on the window. So i drew up plans to make a window perch like they make for large birds but budgie sized so she can't get at the wood any more. Here is my finished product: She can see her reflection on the bottom too It also sticks to the mirror so she can talk to the other budgie without pooping all over the counter It really came out better than i expected! March 25, 200817 yr That is really awesome... now to mass produce and make lots of $$$$$$$ on your brilliant idea
March 25, 200817 yr That is so brilliant !! Great job !! You could market those and make your fortune
March 26, 200817 yr Looks good! i agree you should make a job out of it all different sixed bird versions and maybe waterproof ones for the shower
March 26, 200817 yr Author Thanks everyone... Looks like my idea has taken off already and I have to open a factory. (Laughing out loud) I guess when your desprate for a solution and you find one yourself, it pays off. Now if I could only create a self cleaning cage... Edited March 26, 200817 yr by Pika
March 26, 200817 yr Thanks everyone... Looks like my idea has taken off already and I have to open a factory. (Laughing out loud) I guess when your desprate for a solution and you find one yourself, it pays off. Now if I could only create a self cleaning cage... Brilliant and crafty!!! It looks like it's a hit too! If you get your self cleaning cage up and running, I'll put my hand up to try the first one....
March 26, 200817 yr I read this post before, but did not comment due to time. I agree with what many people have said - great idea, well done. I have always wondered about those indoor budgies and their droppings. At least this catches them. I am assuming that everyone who has indoor budgies is just content on cleaning up accident all around the house?
March 26, 200817 yr I love it, it looks very professional. How did you make it? Dave: The little poops are easily vacuumed up once they've dried and I usually have paper under the areas that they tend to sit over the most. Dave, did you just change your username or did something happen to your old account? March 26, 200817 yr Author How did you make it? I cut two pieces of lexan which is a plexiglass alternative that doesn't get cloudy like plexiglass and is less likely to scratch (but plexiglass could be used too). The pieces were cut to 6 inches by 9 inches. I found two large suction cups with little nubs (a technical term ) on the end so the end of the cup could be pushed through a hole in the plastic. I drilled holes into the lexan slightly smaller than the ends on the nubs so the plastic doesn't slide off. Then i used two hinges and drilled holes in the lexan for those and attached with screws and nuts. I just used a 3/8 inch dowel and cut it down for the perch. I drilled holes in the bottom of the plastic and screwed in the perch from the bottom. To hold up the bottom half i used a clear plastic thread attached from the suction cup nubs to the screws holding in the perch. Yes.. i know the plastic thread won't last long because she will chew through it but it is just a temporary hold until i find a small bracket to hold it up. Make sure any materials you use are bird safe! The project is actually quite easy and cheap since i had most of the supplies and all the tools. But even if you have to buy all the supplies, i don't think it would be all that expensive. Here a small sheet of plexiglass is about 3 US dollars, the dowel was about 1 US dollar, hingers could probably be found 2 in a pack for around 3 US dollars, and suction cups are only a few dollars. Whether you use a small braket or thread or even fishing line to hold it up that will be another few dollars. It could be made for any sized bird too and without the heafty price that manufactures put on them. I am assuming that everyone who has indoor budgies is just content on cleaning up accident all around the house? That is one of the reasons i made this. The poop just can get everywhere and on every thing. But it is not too difficult to clean up, this is just more of a convenience. Edited March 26, 200817 yr by Pika
