Preening Or Comforting

Hi

I have mentioned my boys Charlie & Benny really seem to love each other. I am just curious about some of the behavious they are displaying. They are nearly always sitting side by side - even though they have a huge cage with a variety of perches and branches - and seem to be constantly preening each other. If I take one out without the other - they seem to call out for each other. It is a loud single chirp, then the other replies with a single chirp and the first chirps again etc.

I am trying to give them seperate time out of the cage as I am trying to bond them individually to Danielle & me, but when I seperate them, they are nowhere near as placid or willing to interact with us. When I have them out together, they follow each other around (mainly Benny following Charlie) but are also happy to both sit on our shoulders, so long as they are together. Tonight, just as I was settling down for the night, Benny was beside Charlie with his head bowed and nuzzled into Charlies chest. Charlie wasn't preening, but just had his beak resting on Benny's head. I stood and watched them for several minutes, and neither moved. On the assumption that they are both boys - and at the risk of being politically incorrect - does this seem a little homosexual? Could they just be comforting each other as they are still new in our home.

Thanks

Sounds like best buddies to me :hap:

They enjoy doing things together, being with you guys, sitting together.

I find that my two like sleeping near each other and eat at the same time ;)

I agree. I have two male budgies in one cage, and they always stick together and preen each other and feed each other. It´s really cute! Feel happy that they get along, because some budgies don´t, (Laughing out loud).

That is so very true.

Sherbet (female) didn't like Fizzy (male) at first and kept on attacking him when he was only very young.

I never thought they'd be civil towards one another, but they are and even though Sherbet is the boss, Fizzy doesn't seem to mind being second in charge ;)

sounds like they are really good buddies... I have heard of boy budgies doing that stuff before... I don't think its homosexual behavior just typical males, they love hangin' with the boys. ;)

(Laughing out loud) yeah, just making each other look good for the ladies :hap:

Many of my boys in the aviary prefer each others company...there's a lot of kissing and preening going on and its boy on boy bahaviour ;)

Remember budgies live in flocks of 500 in the wild, preening behavior, feeding others is not "considered sexual" it is considered a social behavior which induces comfort, security etc... My 2 boys loved each other but not in any type of a sexual way. I think we sees this closeness and as humans it may make us feel uncomfortable because we think it is a "gay type of behavior" but it is not it is just like apes preen each other they enjoy being close whether it be 2 females, 2 males or different sexes.

There is nothing wrong with your birds ... they are giving comfort & love & attention to each other. There is absolutely nothing wrong with their behaviour.

About them calling out that loud chirp to each other when you remove one from the cage while the other is inside .... that is so normal too ! It is just calling the other bird & telling him to come back to the cage where its safe & home.

If you had just one bird & you & that one bird were very close & bonded & you left the room that bird would also call that same single loud chirp to you.

It is telling you to come back. It's wanting you near ! It's their way of keeping the flock together to assure safety.

If you are trying to hand train each bird individually ... you will need to take each bird separately into a room where they can't call & hear each others calls to distract themselves. Its always a little harder to hand train two birds. Not impossible. But a bit more of a challenge.

Your birds are perfectly normal ... don't worry !

I'd love to hear how it goes with you in the long run ... let us know !
