Posted October 13, 200717 yr I got home this morning to find 3 baby budgies in my kitchen under a warming lamp! My 14 year old had been down the road at his friends house and they had these budgies (about 6 weeks old possibly). The boys mother was just going to open the cage and let them go, it turns out the hen died on the bottom of the cage with an egg hanging half out of her and the cock sat on the eggs that had already been laid until the hatched and he fed them but one of her other children left the cage open a couple of days ago and the cock flew away so the chicks have been fending for themselves since. They are in the middle of moving house and they couldn't be bothered taking the babies with them so they were just going to let them fly away so my son said he'd take them. He bought them home and gave them water and some millet as he didn't know if they could eat seed. I checked them over and 2 seem okay but one of the white's keelbone is quite prominent. They can eat seed and were quite frightened and skittish at first but they have been eating all afternoon and are now cherping and appear quite happy. The woman came to my front door this afternoon and had the cheek to ask me for some money for the birds and I told her I was quite happy to pay her for them because she would need the extra money to pay for the fine she gets when I report her to the RSPCA on Monday, while I went to get my purse she was gone when I got back??? Below are some pictures of them.
October 13, 200717 yr What a stroke of luck your son being there at the right time and knowing enough to bring them home. Well done to him, and well done to you for taking it on. At that age they should be eating well enough on their own, but you may need to give them some treat food to tempt them a little. Honey seed treat sticks, and soft food and vegies in a flat tray...anything they will eat. They look okay. The blue one seems to be a boy and the other two, one is definitely a female...cant see the other one properly. Good job :budgiedance:

Good job :budgiedance: Yes I was very proud of my son for what he had done with them, he'd even put newspaper on the wire bottom tray so they could walk on it properly. What sort of soft food would I offer them?
October 13, 200717 yr Some budgie starter would be good, but if you havent any...some wholemeal or multigrain bread with some seed through it so the seed softens and grate some carrot and finesliced some greens like silver beet etc, maybe some boiled mashed up egg too. :budgiedance:
October 13, 200717 yr Great job both you and your son. I agree with what Kaz has stated they look old enough to be away from parents and eating try with the extra things to start them now on a great diet.
October 13, 200717 yr :budgiedance: Give your son a pat on the back, good job! Great that you are taking care of them, terrible woman!!! Just like the 2 budgies I am picking up today that were left behind when the tenants moved out...........People can be so disgusting, I agree!
October 13, 200717 yr Your son should be proud - he did a good turn yesterday. What nerve of the lady though! They are beautiful birds :budgiedance:
October 14, 200717 yr I have read your post Denise.I think there may be a little mix up in your statement. I doubt a cock bird, would sit on the eggs & hatch them.Iam not haveing a go at you. But other newbee might get the wrong impresion, that a cock bird will sit on eggs & hatch them & feed the chicks.

But other newbee might get the wrong impresion, that a cock bird will sit on eggs & hatch them & feed the chicks. This was the story my son was told, they only started off with 1 pair and if the hen died with the egg half delivered it only left the cock so I don't know??
October 14, 200717 yr That a good point Denise,Seeing as 2 of the chicks are albinos, thereis a fair chance, they may of been confused as 1 of the parents would be albino.
October 14, 200717 yr Wow, it's a good thing your son thought to bring them home! They're very cute, i'm so glad they're safe and not being left to die in the wild.
October 14, 200717 yr Author That a good point Denise,Seeing as 2 of the chicks are albinos, thereis a fairchance, they may of been confused as 1 of the parents would be albino. The hen was albino and the cock was an aqua/blue color
October 14, 200717 yr Cock bird would have been split albion. As macka pointed out, the cock bird wouldn't have sat on the eggs. But it was good that your son was there and acted in the right way. Well done. I posted in another topic about the need to check the boxes twice a day and this is one reason. The hen prolapsing might have been able to be saved if detected early. A good diet with access to calcium and Vit D would have helped stop this occuring.
October 15, 200717 yr Well done to both you and your son. Be proud of him for his actions and proud of yourself that you have raised such a compassionate child The birds look lovely :hap:
October 15, 200717 yr Wow, that's good your son brought them home. I can't believe the woman asked for money :hap: . I think what you've told her was perfect !!! I have one hen from a woman who didn't want her anymore. My friend told her, I have budgies and she asked me if I'd take her. They've had the budgie for like 2 years and now they just decide they don't want her anymore . She lived in a small cage, in the kitchen on the fridge !!! So I was happy to take her. October 16, 200717 yr Author Found out some news today regarding the death of the hen from the neighbour of my son's friend where he got these birds. It seems that the hen died trying to lay and egg from a second round, so these birds were already hatched when she died. Apparently the boy got a bit confused when tellling my son what had happened. Sorry for any misleading information in my first post but I was just going by what was told to my son at the time. I hope this clears everything up.
October 17, 200717 yr People can be so cruel, it would be a different story if it was them How are the georgous little ones doing, have you named them yet?
October 17, 200717 yr Author Hows the "new arrivals" doing, Denise How are the georgous little ones doing, have you named them yet? They are coming along great thanks for asking. They never stop eating and they are so cute they all have to be around the dish to eat together. I haven't named them as yet, my sister in law wants one of the albinos if one is a male, but very hard to sex albinos at this age.
October 18, 200717 yr :hap: They are lovely birds, and it shows you have raised your son well, Congratulations and good luck to you both.
