Posted February 18, 200718 yr Recently purchased a baby budgie, have had him for a few days, he is quite used to us now and dosnt get bothered by us being around him etc. He is tamed.. Problem is, we have let him out of the cage nearly everyday, he loves sitting on top of his cage to get a better view of the kitchen window which is where he sits. Everytime we put him back in his cage he loses the plot and starts climbing around inside his cage jumping all over his food and water, he literaly looks insane. But he does this for hours until i have to get to the point of covering up his cage to relax him. He reminds me of a puppy who wants to watch the traffic at the door or windows.. Any ideas ?? Is this normal behaviour ?? One more thing... Im thinking of buying an Alexandrine, probably a good idea to seperate the two ? Edited February 18, 200718 yr by beemaa
February 18, 200718 yr I know that some of my budgies get restless in their cage when they want out. Perhaps he is just not happy in there. Sounds like he likes his freedom. And being out with you guys - his flock.
February 19, 200718 yr Maybe he hates being in the cage? Can you move it to a better location so he can look out the window? :greenb:
February 19, 200718 yr Sometimes new budgies, have what is called the houdini stage. Where they continuosly try to escape from the cage. This will pass, don't worry. Just ignore him when he does it. Re the Alexandrine. DO NOT house them in the same cage. The Alexandrine has a huge beak, that it can use to easily attack and decapitate a budgie. You can however let them have free flying time together, but only under supervision.
February 22, 200718 yr I have tried to relocate the cage so he can see out the window, now he is obssesed with the windows, you let him out of the cage and he tries to peck the window and escape. When he gets sick of doing that he'l fly to the sliding door and just sit infront of the door staring out. Lastly he will fly to the front door and cling himself to the security door mesh and sit there before getting tired and flying back to his cage where he spends most of his time sitting on top of his cage staring out the window chirping to the other birds outside. I have noticed over time now since having him for over a week, he is VERY moody, at times he will move away from your finger when you try to put your hand in the cage. Then the next day he will be all hypo again, and you guessed it, the next day he will be running away from your hand and climbing on the inside of his cage cause he dosnt want to get out. I have put him in the laudry now to see if maybe he is getting alittle too obssesed with the window (??? possibility ??) .. Im a little lost as to what to do, i think maybe he has bipolar... hehe dont know whats going through that little head of his. We let him out of the cage for at least a few hours a night, he is totaly obssesed with windows, you put him on your shoulder and he will sit on your shoulder but he will be looking at the sliding door. As soon as he gets a chance he flies right into it (sometimes misscalculates and hits the wall).... Any help would be REALLY appreciated!!

February 22, 200718 yr No i havnt, if you have the link that would be awsome, ill have a look at it and see if i can get some advise/tips
February 22, 200718 yr oh old is your budgie again? Is he going through a moult? They do have hormonal stages where your budgie you knew once is not the same one you knew but give it a couple weeks the hormones calm down and they are back. Also make sure you are providing at least 10-12 hours of dark time for your budgie that helps with hormonal stages. Merlin used to cling to the window then he learned he wasn't able to get out and likes to sit at the window. Give it time he will eventually the window will not be an issue.
February 22, 200718 yr Its perfectly normal in baby budgies - I really miss the running up and down the cage floor and turning themselves inside out. Enjoy it while it lasts I would it will be over soon.
February 22, 200718 yr It is probably good to check that your cage is a good size for an active budgie and that you have stimulating toys for him.
