Posted February 3, 200718 yr I am just mortified I havent stopped crying. This all just happened in the last 30 minutes quickly popped round to my friends house who has some budgies. Anyway she mentioned that the aviary next door had been quiet lately and wondered if next door had gotten rid of their birds. I popped my head over the fence and noticed some birds appeared to be lying on the ground. So I went round to knock at their front door not knowing what I was going to say. Shouldnt of worried no one was home. Went into their backyard I know tresspassing and nearly fell over seeing the whole avairy floor covered with dead budgies must of been 50 of them I found 3 barely alive grabbed them and took them to my local vet who has an avian vet she knows. I have talked just then on the phone to her it doesnt look good. My friend has since said that she found out that next door just left for holidays a couple of days ago whether they had got someone to look after the birds or not I dont know but all water trays are dry and was no fresh seed. My friends going to talk to th RSPCA but I just don't know how this could happen. The avairy was in immaculate condition it appeared they had been cared for. If they did get someone what are they gonna think when they get back. I'm just devastated I feel like being sick I really do I nearly did vomit when I got home so many poor little things died of thirst and hunger and you know how hot it has been in Perth
February 3, 200718 yr Author I just found out one died and the others on the way, why did I have to find them its breaking my heart. And I might be in trouble for trespassing I dont care if one of them survives it will be worth it I cant believe it
February 3, 200718 yr Oh no Kerrie. Sorry to hear this. Those poor little souls. I hope there's a logical explanation (!) or else that the ****** owners get prosecuted. What's the status on the 3 remaining budgies? Do they have some sort of illness or is it just the case of starvation/no water? Go and have a glass of wine for lunch to calm your nerves. Take care. Turbs.
February 3, 200718 yr Author Thankyou Turbs. Yeah ones dead too far gone. At the present time its dehydration they will do a cant remember what they called it but going to do some further tests on the other birds to see if anything else is to blame. Yeah the RSPCA is involved now and I may be in trouble for taking the birds and trespassing they trying to avoid that but it might happen I dont care this ***** unbelievable.
February 3, 200718 yr This brings tears to my eyes. It's so horrible. How awful for you, and the people when they get back! This hurts me personally too, because it happened to me once. I was very little. My parents and I went for a trip to Asia and I'd forgotten to tell my brother to look after the birds in my aviary. My mum said not to worry because the budgies lived inside and when he went to feed them he'd remember the birds outside too. Well, he didn't My budgies were perfectly healthy, overweight even, but when I went outside they were all dead. My four canaries, twenty or so finches, and four quails. I was absolutely horrified and devastated. What made it worse was my brother's attitude - "Oh. Whoops. No one told me. What are you bawling for, they're only birds." I was a small child and it really shook me. I learnt fast about responsibility. With no help from the adults. I can only imagine the suffering. Kerrie, I hope it was a terrible accident and not ignorant carelessness. Thanks for sharing, please keep us updated. Take care of yourself. Edited February 3, 200718 yr by Chrysocome
February 3, 200718 yr Don't worry Kerrie. You did the right thing - some things are right no matter what the damn law says - if it goes awry, then get one of the current affair programs involved. I'd do exactly the same thing and wouldn't hestitate one millisecond. Those owners should be ashamed of themselves. I hope they feel sick to their stomach for a year thinking about what they've done. Even if it was an "accident", I would personally take a lot of convincing re this. What were they thinking. People like this shouldn't be allowed to keep any animals. Thankyou Turbs.Yeah ones dead too far gone. February 3, 200718 yr Author Well on the phone to my vet (whos my friend) whose with the avian vet. She says that he reckons that the last two are strong and fighting hard. But to be prepared for the worst as they are in very bad shape. I just hope they make it. The RSPCA are doing what they do and I am sitting here talking to you guys cause I dont know wot else to do. It has just ruined my day its only 10.30 in the morning here. Why cant peole look after their pets I just dont get it. I mean why would you get a pet if you dont want it. I spent $1000 in vet expenses for Guess (that was her name)a budgie I bought the other half for his birthday. She was only 7 when she died she had heart problems and atendencey to overeat. I also had a birdy autopsy done and the vet reckoned look like she died of a heart attack poor thing. That cost me alot of $ but I needed to know if I had missed something and it was my fault or not. I still feel guilty I miss her alot. She was grumpy but funny. But just leaving birds in an avairy to die, Why?
February 3, 200718 yr OMG how horrible. I would have done the same exact thing Kerrie. Please keep us updated.
February 3, 200718 yr At least there's a glimmer of hope for the other two. Great news Kerrie. You may have saved their lives - even lessening their suffering for an hour would be worth it. Did the vet say what they were giving the little birdies? Subcutaneous fluids and crop needling food etc. Or were they not up to the food in their condition?? I hope their little kidneys won't fail. I wonder if the RSPCA will do a title or council search to see who owns the home. That would be their best bet I guess. How long have the owners been away? It's amazing how flippant some people become with animals. Thinking they can just put in food and water and "it'll be right". People seem to think that budgies and birds generally are commodity items - ie. if it dies, I'll get another. I often wonder if people should have a licence as is required for cats and dogs. It won't fix things but at least may give govt a revenue stream to enforce better husbandry.
February 3, 200718 yr Kerrie, I am so sorry to read about this. Sorry for the birds, sorry for you, sorry for your friend (who's probably kicking herself for not having realized the severity of the situation sooner & done what you were brave enough to do). I'm also very sorry for the owners, assuming they'd made the appropriate arrangements, and left town confident their birds would be well taken care of in their absence. Sending prayers, ~~~ Kali
February 3, 200718 yr Author Yeah Turbs thats what the vet is worried about with them he said the complications from the effects of dehydration is the biggest threat he said their kidneys could fail and then their finished. I know they are on fluids but I cant imagine they would be up to food but I havent asked either. Oh god you should of felt how light they were I wouldnt of knowing I was holding them if I wasnt looking at them. One of them looked at me I swear with such misery and pain. I will never get it out of my head. Yeah the RSPCA is looking them up, I then may be in trouble if the owners want to gt nasty which I imagine they will and decide to press charges of trespassing and stealing against me. The RSPCA are allowed to enter peoples property to rescue animals I however am not. We think they have only been gone since thursday but not sure. Its the condition of the avairy thats got me baffled it was so clean and well set up obviously cost a bit, surely the wouldnt of just left their birds to die if theyd made an effort to look after it.
February 3, 200718 yr :ausb: Let us keep our fingers and tails crossed for the other two that they pull through, you just never know. Am unable to say what I would like to do to the owners, unless they were laying near death themselves elsewhere but sounds like they just took off and abandoned them, why couldn't they have hired a neighbourhood kid to feed and water them. May your proper authorities charge them with multiple counts of animal cruelty. Sorry this happened to you and bless you for trying to help them Kerrie. :angel1: Edited February 3, 200718 yr by Phoebe
February 3, 200718 yr How terrible!! :ausb: I hope that the owners did think they had someone lined up for feeding/watering the budgies and that this isn't just a case of neglect on the owners part. All those poor budgies, keep us posted on how it all turns out.
February 3, 200718 yr Its devastating..............!! I think you may find if a bird sitter was asked to feed and water....they have asked someone who knows nothing about birds. And with the heat we have had it has become tragic. I was told...birds can go up to a week without water as long as they have seed for they get moisture from the seed. Not that you would want them to of course ! So, something is terribly wrong here....the hot weather hasnt helped. The bird sitters need stringing up !! Maybe the owners are unaware of what has happened. Time will tell. Kerrie, you are a brave girl to have done what you have to rescue these birds. I would have done the same thing you did so noone can say breaking in or trespassing was wrong in this case..........Wonderful job on your part and I hope at least the last two left make it. They have all of us on their side. Keep us up to date :angel1:
February 3, 200718 yr Author Well nobody knows when the owners left now there was talk that it was thursday but another neighbour believes it was earlier then this said the car in driveway was not the neighbours car on the thursday. I know the seed tray looked empty just husks the water trays were dry. If there was a bird sitter they didnt replace the seed the trays are large. Judging by the avairy I just cant believe that they would not have a bird sitter so someone has heaps of explaining to do. I was alos under the impression they could survive a week without water. The vet reckons that it would be touch and go for a while but they seem to be responding well to treatment. the vet is such an angel :angel1: no wonder my vet refers her bird patients to him. And I have been advised to keep my mouth shut about where when who and others involved due to legal things, this I will do I imagine I'm going to be in enough trouble. My friend is beating herself up about it, I told her im just nosey thats why I checked thank goodness I did. The body count is 53 budgies in avairy plus 1 at the vets, may they all go to heaven. Thats all for now but I will be keping you all updated on the two survivors keep praying for them please Thanks everyone Kerrie Edited February 3, 200718 yr by kerrie
February 3, 200718 yr Kerrie, I don't think you will get into any trouble as the RSPCA will take your side. Also, are you sure the people have gone away and that they are not inside, too ill to do anything. (it does happen a lot) If anyone knows their name try phoning and if no answere, ask the police to check that are are not home and in distress. I have had to do just that, once, the police were very nice to me and when they checked the poor owner was on his bed too ill to move. So please check that out before throwing blame. If they okay, well then blame them all you want and with my blessing Cindy

But its been confirmed that the house is vacant. I'm not willing to blame anyone I dont know the full story yet so I will leave my judgement of the owners till then. Its whoever is responsible that I am mad at. I'm also a little more calm now, I was still a bit emotional when I got on here
February 3, 200718 yr ?Vacant? You did most magnificently Kerrie, let the authorities take care of it, just you relax with your pets and hubby to be. :ausb:
February 3, 200718 yr Author ?Vacant? You did most magnificently Kerrie, let the authorities take care of it, just you relax with your pets and hubby to be. :ausb: Yeah I meant no-one is in the house at the moment so they are somewhere and someone has been collecting their mail every few days. Also I have been told that the birds are rehydrated to an acceptable level and that if they survive overnight and take food they should survive. Fingers crossed. February 3, 200718 yr Wow. Kerrie. You poor thing. I'm glad you did check the avairy for those budgies' sakes. I would have done exactly as you have done and I commend you. I don't think you'll get into trouble or anything. It is worth it for those two little budgies and the third one that had its suffering relieved before it died.
February 3, 200718 yr Kerrie, how awful If a car was there Thursday and they had left earlier, then maybe the car belonged to whoever they have asked to look after their place. We have been having a LOT of very hot days here. If they checked the food, maybe, being inexperienced, they thought the birds had plenty of seed, when there was only husks left. As has been said, they can survive for a week without water, but start to die after 8 hours without seed. They need food in their crops. If this is a case of negligence I hope they get charged with all 54 counts of animal cruelty I can't imagine facing the horror of losing all of my budgies like that . Feathers.
February 4, 200718 yr Author Well thank goodness for the avian vet. The two survivors have pulled up well. After crop needling food at first I have been told that they are now starting to feed themselves. Although the vet is going to keep them for a while until they are in good condition again ( at a decent weight, and eating well). Basically they were suffering malnutrition and dehydrated, and hopefully there will be no related health problems. He has even mentioned that he may keep them depending on what goes on with the previous owners. Lucky birdies if they go home with him, best medical benefits ever. Still no word on the owners and what happened. I am thinking as you said Feathers that perhaps the person looking after the house believed the bird tray had plenty of seed left. If so I do feel sorry for them as they will be mortified to know they are responsible for the death of those birds. Anyway I am now much happier at least out of all that horror two budgies survived and are in the best hands ever
