Hi

This may be a silly question but why do all my girls have full black eyes and the boys have a tan/white ring in it.

Is it something to with the colours as all the girls are Pied Mutations and boys arent or is it to do with there sexes or age???

Madeline

Apart from baby budgies having full black eyes, recessive pieds do as well...their whole life. Most other budgies have iris rings. :P

Bubbles is right it depends on the mutation and age.

Albinos/Lutino and Dark Eyed Clears also have no iris rings :P

Some spangles also dont get iris rings. My Tobi Girl was Yellowface Opaline Spangle and had no iris rings.

It's funny reading that , only 10 minutes ago I was reading the opposite .

According to the Budgerigar Society Colour Standard:

The mask, general bodycolour, frontal, crown and wings should be a rich buttercup yellow throughout, and all areas to be clear and free from all markings.

Primary wing flights and primary tail feathers - to be yellowish white.

Cheek patches - silvery white

Cere a fleshy pink in cocks and brown in hens.

Feet and legs to be fleshy pink.

Eye to be red with white iris.

Particular attention to the bottom line :D

Dark-eyed clears should also have iris rings.

If your hens don't have visible iris rings, Tolula, I would say unless they are recessive pieds it is an age issue moreso than anything else. Pieds tend to develop a visible iris ring later than normal mutations do.

Anne according to this site DEC do not have iris rings http://www.budgieplace.com/c_dec.html they stay plum like the recessives :D

As for the ino I believe I remember reading that yes they can have iris rings but their iris have to be red.

Do you have a picture of your birds that you can post here :D

**scratches head with puzzled look on face** :P

That is interesting. I can see where the recessive pied gene may come into play here then. I thought the other gene would overrule that, being it is a recessive gene and you need two for visual traits. Does anyone have a DEC they could check for us?

I always thought that if they had the iris ring and the blue cere of the male (tan female) that would make them a double factor spangle and if they didn't then that would make them the DEC. That would how I was taught to tell the different :P

My albino and the lacewing i used to have both had white iris rings. So have any other ino's i've seen in pet shops or at breeders.

The recessive pied affects the eyes, buty I would say that the clearflight pied wouldnot haver any effect on the eyes. So in a DEC they have no iris rings.

However I have a feeling that Dom pied gene affects the eyes, due to DF dom pieds having mismatching eyes.

wow this thread seems to have gotten confusing for the new people :P

If any one is lost please speak up, we are not trying to confuse people but simply learn from each other.

My knowledge was that DEC (as well as rec pied and young) had no iris rings. Ino's DO have iris rings.

 yep that is why I started that one in the show standards I figured that would clear it up but I see it is clear as mud there too :D
