How Many Of You Have Bought A Bird Without A Vet Check?

Featured Replies

I saw this on another forum I thought it was interesting most of our budgies are probably not vet checked right? Let's find out.

(I hope I did this right)

Hi Lovey. Were you trying to do a poll? It doesn't appear to be that.

My budgies were purchased at Pisces Pet Emporium here in Calgary and they make you sign a contract that ensures that you will take them for a vet exam within a week or so (I forget the exact time limit). Which, of course, I did. I wouldn't buy birds from anywhere else in Calgary.

Yes I was (Laughing out loud) but it didn't work as I see. So I guess this is okay :-)

Do you have to pay for the vet check or do they cover it for you? Just interested since they require it.

Oh no, I have to pay for it. They are just making darn sure I'm going to go do it, which is fine by me! I'd rather a pet store be concerned than just hand over the bird. I think it's more of a contract stating the bird left there in good health and they are not responsible if I didn't take the bird to the vet within the required time period. I think it's just a liability issue.

None of mine were Vet checked!

You got me thinking because whenever any of my other pets, cat or dog, came home I had them at the vet - checked, wormed, flead and vacinations done within that first week. My budgies only got that lonely month of quarantine! :)

none of mine were vet checked before purchase, only my conures were.

None of my four were vet checked.

I agree with having all birds vet checked, no matter what breed they are. When I got Rainbow he was sick, so he went to the vet (ER actually). Skittles went to the vet shortly after I got her for a wellness visit in addition to her quarantine, and I took all the babies to the vet myself after they fledged. They also get regular checkups whether they need them or not.

I think the question is a little off worded....

Did I buy my budgies from the store without a vet check... YES

Did I then take them to the vet after I bought them... YES

Most pet stores dont sell budgies with any vet checkup, just a "warranty", its then the owners responsibility to vet check

My conures were sold with the vet documents

:hap: Guilty as charged, none of my "purchased" birds went for a vet check unless I was concerned about them. (I didn't know any better years ago). All my rescues have been quarantined and run through a vet. Guess I can redeem myself in that I took them in for the itty, bittiest thing. :hap:

I haven't found a Store that can prove it vet checks its birds before sale.

Many will tell you they have a vet check them but they can't prove it.

When i get a new bird i don't take it to get vet checked unless i see something that worries me. e.g. when Ozzie's poops were runny the week after we got him.

Didn't vet check mine but Flavious is off to the vet on Saturday to get the spot on his eye checked. I have a feeling its scaly face. He has been quarnanteed from the others for now.

How about the health certificate Daz? Does that help prove anything or can they just make it up? Not being snotty (Laughing out loud) just asking because I don't breed. Example: I know many budgies most are not vet checked before the leave for sale most bigger birds usually have a certificate of health.

The purpose of this topic was not to make anyone feel guilty that they didn't vet check I think it was just interesting.

Personally I didn't add my answer neither Pretty or Merlin were not vet checked and have never been to the vets yet (fingers crossed).

Yar. I don't vet check generally. I think they go through enough stress just settling down in the new home, and then to be taken away to another weird smelling and bright place would be very scary. I only take them if they need it. Like Isis, whom I took to the vet 2 weeks after getting her cause I suspected scaly face (I was right and managed to nip it in the bud too) and I took Arkady along with me for a check up at the same time , because I thought I might as well do two of them at the same time (no extra charge) and he also had runny poos.

really? is that an oz thing? or maybe im lucky? my store uses the same vet i take my conures too, but i go to a different vet for my budgies. (may sound weird, but the conure vet specializes in the bigger birds, & i've been going to him for about 15 years)

I asked a salesperson in the store where I bought Bluey about their vet and got some vague answer. I still don't know who they use.

I had to do the 'ring-around' to find a vet with an interest in avian health for Bluey not long after she settled in because she was constantly scratching.

  • 3 weeks later...

none of mine were vet checked ether or quarnanteed for that matter :P-micah

None of my budgies were vet checked but they were taken to the vets more recently more often than they should.

2 of my tiels and my CAG came with hatch certificates/ vets reports and DNA certificate (CAG only).

I'v taken one budgie to the vet with an injury, they seemed to think i was kind of stupid for taking a bird in and in result did the surgery to late so she died while under. :)

I'm sorry to hear that. ;) Why did they think you were stupid? Maybe you should try another vet.

Albe just to clarify was it friends for the vet that felt that way because by no means it is stupid to help an injured pet.

If it was the vets - I would make sure that I checked around now in case you ever need a vet and find an avian vet which is one that specializes in just that birds.

If it was your friends well you can deal with them would tell them to... ;) have a nice day ;).
