  1. See ya there Wayno. Bringing any birds? I should have a few. Come on Splatmeister, bring those dark greens on an adventure, there's a bag of cuttlefish in it for you.
  2. Can vouch for all that Splat. It's a big long bird that has a nice line and releases the feather up and forward with a roll and ends up very wide from the front. A really super bird.
  3. http://www.bcv.asn.au/Geelong.htm Be great to see a big turnout. Should be a great day. I will shout anyone who comesand mentions this thread a can of drink maybe even a bevvy afterwards. cheers Dan
  4. Get him a tiny bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates, maybe a wash and a splash of after shave. Used to work for me. Actually no point me giving advice on this one. Listen to Kaz.

Sad to hear Julie, looks like a terrific bird and you had the good fortune/management to breed him in the first place and his legacy will live on.
  6. Huge effort, well done. Blows the whole idea that you need to have fistfuls of cash to be successful. You are a great advertisement for our hobby (not fancy). I am sure that with the birds you are producing yoiu will keep doing well. Congratulations Julie.
  7. Some super birds there Julie. Look out when you get a full season together.
  8. The Blizzard hen is visually just a bird, which I got for $30. But she is a breeding machine, she laid a clutch of 13 eggs. I knew that she would have some breeding behind her. So far they all look like keepers. The Armstrong bird looks to be pre-potent. I have 2 of his sons already which i bought at the same time and they are very nice. I will develop a line around him. They throw the feather out from the cere laterally and forward. I can see that the big grey chick will do the same thing.

Thanks dan, i might have to join a club, might help me a bit, do you think he could be bred to a bird with head width and mask and actually have some chicks with good qualities , i really like this bird and would love to show them, i think i will join a club though, do they give you much info, i heard they have meetings what are the meetings for do you know? Anyway thanks again dan They have meetings and birds are usually shown, go along and find out. Ask lots of questions there and see if you can visit some people. In all honesty for $20 or $30 down here you could buy a bird so superior (show quality wise) that it makes your bird not worth perservering with as it would take many years to get that bird's progeny to an acceptable standard. Hope that helps.
  10. Kind of like Brad Pitt with the charm of Sean Connery, you won't miss me:blush:
  11. Just read this and canker would be my first guess.

Hiya You obviously have an interest i breeding "show" type budgies so you should try to get in touch with a local club and meet a few of the breeders. Hopefully by going to meetings, visiting some breeders and seeing some shows you will get an appreciation for what a good show bird looks like. Clubs usually welcome new members and I know my club bend over backwards to get new members started, As for an appraisal of your light green. it is a nice healthy looking but it doesn't have the head size, width, mask or spots to make it useful for show breeding purposes. None of that matters of course if you like the bird. He looks pretty happy with himself. cheers Dan
  13. Look forward to seeing them in person, or in budgie, or whatever.
  14. Thanks people, yeah they aren't too bad for my first 3 rung birds. I think I was fortunate in the stock that I have manage to collect. I know the features that i was looking for and was able to get stock from people who i have known for a while and got pointed in the right direction from breeders in the know. Getting a good start can save a lot of wasted time and heartache. First 2 birds are from a PT - Blizzard pairing. I have 7 out of that nest and it looks like it will be a really nice consistent nest. I can see that the next couple feathering up look okay as well. Look to have size and directional feather. Both parents are showy and good in the wing and back so I am confident that these guys will be solid birds. The grey is out of a Gary Armtsrong cock that I got at a fire sale and a Tevelein family hen. There is five in the nest and the grey pictured is the oldest, the next couple of siblings don't have his width or size. He is a big budgie. I will wait to see his outline and wings but he could be a real good budgie. This pairing was put together to produce some big normals, but this bird has surprised me with it's feather. I have had some disasters as well with a prolapsed hen, egg eaters and the odd clear round, but it's part of dealing with new birds and figuring them out. It's a lot of fun at the moment. It's nice to be starting up again with half a clue.

Probaly be okay Ellie, check to see that it is feeding. Watch it carefully to see that it is able to crack the seed, that is take the outer part (husk) of the seed off and eat the centre. If the bird looks fluffed up and depressed then get it to the Vet as it will be starving. Did you try clipping it's beak?
  16. "> At about 30 days old . The grey is from a different nest than the other 2.
  17. Good luck, should do well. Cinn Op hen is also a ripper and very showy. All are great birds but she is my fave from those photos.

John Ennis is in my club and is breeding some super YFs at the moment. His YF line is really good Kaz.
  20. Ah good, Digby would have been shattered if i told him that we couldn't show for another year.
  21. Well there you go, never knew that, have never bred one.
  22. Yeah I am not sure I like the new ring issue date, it's confusing and from what I understand I won't be able to show my birds as young birds 2013 which is really disappointing. Good luck GB with pre-selection. For me it looks like this lot of chicks will be a couple of weeks too early to be considered, still a week or so off knowing for sure but I am happy with the way a few are looking. PT's birds look like they have thrown me a couple of gooduns including 7 in one nest.
