its been awhile since ive been on here and updated my progress, almost had aviary 100% finished but have decided to add on again to it with the addition of a indoor flight which i hope to start as soon as the weather improves i begin breeding within the next few weeks too so im in the process of upgrading my breeding cages to better ones and relocating the nesting boxes to the front of the cages (instead of the side) i will post some pics up asap

Well said Heathrow, I breed them to show and the Nationals is the big stage - nothing else counts. Our carers are among the best budgie people in the job. They won't risk transporting, let alone selecting birds that are of questionable health. It might be different in the "smaller" states. Transport has to be practical. We can't send 70 odd birds in individual cages and a breeding cage mnakes a great quarrantine when they get back. Why breed EXHIBITION budgies if you don't want to show them at the best show in the country???? Cheers PT agreed, some people on this forum believe in having birds put in quarantine for 6 weeks which is their choice i believe its excessive especially as you say the birds that get selected are usually at the top of their health, i have tried the quarantine game when buying new birds although i kept them separate for 3 weeks and then with the next lot only a couple of days and honestly it didnt make a difference to my existing stock or the new stock when you buy new birds you usually buy birds that are healthy anyway i realise that it doesnt mean they arent already carrying the bugs for sickness but i guess you cant protect birds 100% of the time if they get sick they get sick so be it. i would think it would be an honour to be selected to go to the nationals i know that i wouldnt hesitate to send birds if selected. some things you just cant help and with all of those birds sitting in a show whose to say there isnt airborne pathogens flying around anyway? im not trying to critisise people for their beliefs or opinions just adding my own:P

id be inclined to agree with kaz i brought some nice birds back in october 2010 and it took them a awhile to get into breeding condition, changing environments is hard on a budgie, but otherwise id be very stoked with what you brought they look nice and will be a great start for you in the hobby. good luck

update time. roof is all framed up and ready for the iron to be put on, i would of liked to have got the roof on and done but sadly i ran out of time so that will just have to wait untill tomorrow but thats okay, tell me what you guys think? a picture with just the framing done and with all the nogging and netting on and a view from the front. ill have more progress to report tomorrow with a bit of luck. then the next time will be to paint it! exciting stuff.

yeah and im planning to have at least one sleep in too! hard to say taboo at this stage ive culled pretty hard so im sitting at about 8 birds right now that i think are worthy, but i feel 30 comfortably. when i get to that stage (which will probably come around all too fast) i will probably either extend again or go with a indoor flight set up,

im just wondering if anyone knows of any good books on budgies that go into genetics and breeding in depth, ive had a look at my local library but it seems the only ones i can find seem to be the ones for first time pet budgies owners and dont really get into the sort of stuff id like to know. i realise that the is alot of great info on here but it would be nice to know of any books that have the sort of info i need and i could just have a read whenevr i need to if this makes sense? so if anyone could help me out by telling my titles and names, authors of any good books that would be awesome!!!!

its a real pity that i am not over there or i could show you, the simplest why i can think of explaining it would be to say if the bottom is say 25mm out from the top you would rip down a piece of timber 25mm to 0mm over the distance of the bottom to top if that makes any sense then your door frame would be plumb, of course that may mean you might need a new door to fit your new opening size cause it could alter it. im not sure if you have or not but could you post a picture up of the opening with some indication of how far its out?
  22. kochy23 replied to splat's post in a topic in Aviaries
you might have to pack the frame out plumb on both side how big is your opening?
