  1. I'm from Noosa, Sunshine coast QLD Splat. well nubly, I feel a bit better knowing others have spent lots on birds as well! I'm going to another breeders place today in Brisbane, as I have various finches, doves, lorikeets and other parrots to sell there, this guy wants only $50 per violet, but he did say they aren't the biggest birds around! So I will go there and at least have a look, but if I do decide I like some, and also get the $200 pair, I must quarantine them away from each other, plus away from all my current birds, that's okay got heaps of room. I'll let you guys know how I go
  2. Hi, I new as well, love dom pieds and albino's! but mainly the violets, anyway see you on the forum
  3. When I spoke to him he had very detailed records for all his birds, he also mentioned something about the nationals? ( wasn't really listening ..... hipnotised by the birds LOL) he is a very serious show breeder, so that's how I read it, trophy's were present too. And yes he had so many different colours, he was going on and on about this normal green bird...... it was nice. but he had alot of violets compared to most breeders I had spoken too. GB, I have a similar story....... I had a sky blue dominant pied cock, and got him a lutino hen ( I liked their contrast LOL) and when she laid her first egg, I was there and saw it, She turned around sunk her beak into it and threw it out of the nestbox! The next day ....same thing, so the day after that I was ready, as soon as she laid it, I whistled really high pitched and she jumped out the nest box! I had rosa bourkes on eggs that were infertile, so I placed the egg with them, they raised this budgie beautifully, and because it was the only chick, it was big and fat! My friend still has 'Albert". So without me doin that that pair would have never reproduced!
  4. Love all your birds, they are all so nice, thats one thing I love about budgies....... such a variety of colours and patterns! Well getting my first pair tomorrow, so I will definately add some pics of them
  5. Thanks rach, LOL Dean.
  6. Well the hen is almost a year old, and the cock bird is 2, he hasn't bred with them before. He had several other cock birds caught ready for me to look at, but when I saw them I wasn't too fussed as they all looked like sky blue single factor violets. I looked in the aviary, and said ....... what about that one! He looked at me for a moment and then grabbed his net LOL. Nearly all of his birds are violet, or violet factor, he showed me some stunning violet dominant pieds in the nest........ they were so nice. I know that I could be wrong about the DF sky blue, but what else could he be? Such a deep blue with purple washed through, and the hen he said was cobalt violet SF dominant pied, but she would be purple if that were the case. Anyway the pics will tell the story...... post them in a couple of days.
  7. I will take some pics in the next couple of days, thanks again.
  8. Well just returned home! What can I say........ stunning! absolutely stunning! The violet cock bird is HUGE, and looks really showey, the hen is very pretty and sits on the perch very nicely (she is sky blue SF violet dominant pied) I know it's alot, but they look awesome. I pick them up tomorrow, got to get my cages set up! I will take some pictures of them and let you guys be the judges! Ps I just sold 2 handraised lutino rainbows, that's how I can afford it, LOL
  9. Well I went to a breeders house today, and he showed me the birds he has for sale. The cock is supposed to be violet, and the hen is supposed to be cobalt dominant pied. Looking at the hen after all deans info, I would say she is a sky blue single factor violet, because she has purple around the neck, and if she were cobalt she would be visual violet. The parents of the hen are as follows - cock = dark green, hen = dominant pied light green, the the grandfather on the fathers side was opaline violet. The cock bird was much more interesting for me, he almost looked violet, but wasn't quite there, really intense blue with purple wash, so would he be a sky blue double factor violet? Has to be, i'm sure of it. Because if he were cobalt wouldn't he be intense purple? He had a really purple bird that I asked him to catch and put in the show cage for comparison, and the one I call sky blue DF was more blue, but still purple..... make sense LOL
  10. Hi guys, I am going to a breeders place today to look at some violets and pieds, he is asking $200 per pair! How will I know if I am getting my money's worth? It seems a bit steep to me! He metiomed one of his foundation stock birds cost him over $600! So I would love some pointers to help me get the right birds. I won't buy anything today, just a look..... but I'm hopeless..... no just a look LOL.
  11. Hi to everyone here, I Started posting a couple of days ago, and totally by-passed this section LOL. As you can tell by my username, I am violet mad! Very happy to have found a site where people are like minded (most of my friends call me the crazy bird guy HAHA). Thanks to everyone who have replied to my topics, muchly appreciated! Especially Dean and Kaz Cheers.
  12. Great pics, there is nothing quite like seeing the birds you breed out in the wild, I remember on a road trip from Noosa to Darwin, seeing many a wild budgie, plus zebra finches, cockatiels, northern rosellas, hooded parrots and many many more! At a rest stop about 80km north of Mt Isa, we come across a massive breeding colony, every nest hollow had chicks or eggs!! It was incredible. Also nesting with them were Cockatiels, and on the ground their were spinifex pigeons. I should upload some pics, as I have thousands of pics from several places in Australia
  13. Wow, what beautiful birds!!!! But this one is my definate favourite, it's exactly what I hope to breed! Am I right in thinking most of the other budgies have violet factor? I am going to a breeders house today to look at a pair for sale, the cock is a single factor cobalt violet, and the hen is a cobalt dominant pied. He is asking $200 for the pair, little expensive I thought, but I suppose you you get what you pay for.
  14. Hi guys, Just starting with budgies again after a few years without them. Am totally hooked on the violets and really want to start breeding violet dominant pieds! If you have any pics you want to share I would LOVE to see them. Cheers.
  15. Yeah thats what I see too! Is it due to the purple around the neck? and do violet factor birds have any other traits to tell them apart?
  16. Ah, great news..... might try that down the track!!
  17. is PARTIAL dominant - meaning the single factor of the gene can express itself visually and the double dose of the gene expresses itself more so. Thanks heaps for all the info..... brain starting to understand the complex violet LOL. So does that mean the intensity of the colour violet or the percentage of violet young produced? ( with the DF violet)
  18. Beautiful!!! Am I right in thinking cloud has the violet factor? (trying to train myself to spot birds with the violet factor)
  19. Firts off just wanted to say that the 2 combo pieds are stunning!! I have never been a big fan of the recessive pieds, but something about those 2 I really like! I might give it a go with the violet factor, I assume you can get violet recessive pieds?
  20. Love the colour!!! Could she have the violet factor aswell? Looks like she has a purple tinge.
  21. Thanks for the advice guys. I am still a little confused LOL, so does that mean a violet cannot be 'made' and that to produce a violet parent birds must carry the violet factor? So all sky blue and mauve violets are genetically as potent as a visual cobalt, just that cobalt intensifies the violet? And how do you get a DF violet? would that happen by mating 2 birds together with the violet factor, and are they visually different from a SF violet? Also with the second mating I thought that you would get Dom pieds as the hen is, but I could be wrong? Dean you really have excellent knowledge on genetics, it is fantastic! Hopefully I'll get it to. Thanks again.
  22. I am just starting up with budgies again after a few years without them, I have never been a big breeder, and mainly have Lorikeets and psephotus parrots, but I do love budgies. The enless combos with colours is very appealing to me. I am purchasing some birds in the next couple of weeks, and just wanted to know with the combos what colours I should get. I have a particular interest in the violet and dominant pieds, and want to breed violet dominant pieds. The following are pairings I am thinking of mating up..... violet cock x cobalt blue dominant pied hen = ? violet cock x grey cinnamon wing dominant pied hen = ? I know the basics in mutations, and am learning more all the time, but for now I need a real mutations wizz to tell me if these pairings will produce violet dominant pied. Any help would be great. Cheers.
