  1. Maybe it is just me, but you have not indicated that either of the birds were spangles, and yet the wing marking on these birds look very much spangles to me. Am I mistaken here? Hi Dave, I have very much bred them as per instructions of Ken Yorke who supplied the Hen,who I will need to confirm what particular type of Dark Wing he classified her as. As for the Cock,Ken had no Blackeyed Yellow Cocks available so I needed to acquire one locally. I am certainly not a colour specialist, and accordingly rely on the advice of experts. But I do take your point re the wing markings, and might forward the picture onto Ken for appraisal.Maybe it's the Cock, that was hiding something. Cheers Patrick These 2 chicks are from a pairing of a Ken Yorke Dark Wing Cock and Hen, This nest of 5 Chicks is from my 02 Spangle Cock.He was put with a young Albino Hen which is not a great pairing, but it was his last hurrah, and her first. They had 6 good Spangles last round. He did nothing with previous Hens, so go figure! This Chick is one of my favs from the first round!
  2. Hi all,As promised I took some pics this morning. This is a nest of 6, from a Blackeyed Yellow Cock x Dark Wing Hen of Ken Yorkes. If I am to believe the dealer the Cock bird is a KK bird.I am thinking about getting the ring no. checked out to prove if is so.He didn't do anything with a previous Hen (eggs were blank)But certainly did the business this time around. CheersPatrick P.S. I hope I have saved this right! A bit of brotherly, sister love! This Hen had 7 chicks last round, and a sensible 4 this time around. Not forgetting Dad who is a Normal Grey Cock.
  3. Hi all, Very cold down here this morning, but the birds still need to be fed! Public Holidays don't mean nothing to them. I will start taking some pics again and get them on here asap. Thanks for asking. Managed to see Yusuf Islam aka (Cat Stevens) last night. If you get the chance to see him you won't be dissapointed. Have a good holiday! Cheers Patrick
  4. Hi GB, Congratulations, they look great! Can't wait to see what you have there. Cheers Patrick
  5. Hello all, Just finished my big Sunday clean up in the Birdroom and managed to do those things that don't get done when your rushing off to work. I split one pair who have finally convinced me a good quality Grey normal I have is infertile. I'll rest him for now and try again later in the year. Never say never! On the other hand I decided to pair up my good quality Lutino hen with my new TCB. She had no partner for a second round and still appeared eager, and fortunately they appear to click. While I acquired them at different times they are from the same reputable stud down here. So fingers crossed. Also chick no. 50 of my second round hatched out this morning. Hopefully amongst my 100+ chicks there are one or two with potential. Cheers Patrick
  6. Hi Rachel, Thank you for reading my journal, though there's not that much happening, besides feeding and cleaning on my part. Though I should be happy they have bred so well. I'm hoping it can continue as the quality of the birds gets better. I will try and get some more pics up, though the photos of pinkies in the nest look a bit like baby photos after while. Have a good weekend! Cheers Patrick
  7. Hi all, Chick no. 45, of the second round hatched out today bringing the flock total to 202. As my first round youngsters mature the noise level is certainly growing too! Cheers Patrick
  8. Hi all, My flock should hit the 200 mark today or tomorrow and with the increased population, boy! how the seed intake has risen. Some serious culling will no doubt be required. We have an Auction coming up in Adelaide next week and I am almost reluctant to go for fear of seeing some great birds. That said I have a few holes in the breeding team I would like to fill for the Spring. Any excuse will do! Cheers Patrick ps Chick 41 of my second round arrived today. Had 65 first round, but that's a long way off at this stage unless all the eggs are goodins'
  9. Hi all, Cracked the 100 mark for the season last night with the hatching of chick 101! By the time many of these second round chicks are ready to be weaned the Aug/Sept season will almost be here. Can't believe half the year has gone already! Cheers Patrick
  10. Hi Taboo, Yes there's something special about Luts isn't there! These two come from a pair that has good bloodlines and are hopefully the first of many more. Four of their siblings died in the first days of life so there could have been six. But I am certainly happy with these two! Cheers Patrick
  11. Hi all, The 36th chick of my second round hatched today, taking my season total this far to 99 chicks not including the odd unfortunate death. As my first round youngsters head towards twelve weeks I am looking forward to getting them into their flight. Cheers Patrick
  12. And another.... And another..... http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx85/je...57/P1030278.jpg And another... This nest of 6 in my second round are from a Blackeyed Yellow Cock x Dark Wing Hen from Ken Yorke. Cheers Patrick http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx85/je...57/P1030293.jpg
  13. Hi GB, Thank you for the lovely comment, all going well thus far but I know I have a lot to learn. As the birds teach you daily. I believe KK lives close by so maybe it's in the air up hear! Have a pleasant Sunday. Cheers Patrick This is some of my first round youngsters.
  14. Thanks guys for the kind words, I only hope they breed this well as the quality improves. 34 chicks as of this morning with my best pairs so far with two and the other with 3 chicks. The later had 7 last round so I would be happy with this result. Tried getting some pics as they were feeding and will load the better ones later. The youngsters like children don't sit still. Cheers Patrick
  15. Thanks Taboo, Yes it's something of a maternity ward in the Birdroom at the moment, with 32 chicks in the nest and 63 in weaning cages. I didn't know what to expect when I started the first round back in March, but they have exceded my best expectations. And yes the work load has grown with every chick so I am looking forward to them taking a break! I am really thankful things have gone so well as it doesn't always go to plan. Cheers Patrick
  16. Hi Jo, That's great, they'll be hooked now! It's funny when you bring in new birds and they begin to get use to a new home and new food. Initially some act a little disinterested in greens etc until they get the drill and dig in like everybody else. When in Rome,I guess. Cheers Patrick
  17. Hi all, 30 chicks as of this morning in this my second round of this season. There are still quite a few eggs to hatch, but I don't expect the numbers of the first round. Getting closer to a 100 chicks for the season which would be a first for me. I have really enjoyed the experience the quantity has given me, and look forward to bring the quality up in the future. Cheers Patrick
  18. Hi all, Up to 28 chicks in the second round and my first chick from my best pair this round which is great. We had our coldest morning this year in S.A. with temps under 5 degrees, which makes that early morning visit to the birdroom a bit chilly, to say the least. Don't think the birds are that impressed either! Cheers Patrick
  19. Hi all, Two more chicks tonight, so it's been a good day. That's 25 this round. I hope to get chicks from my best pair, which should be any day now! Cheers Patrick
  20. Wow! That would be amazing to watch. Fantastic stuff. What greens do you give your birds? Cheers, Jo Hi Jo, They're a bit spoilt at the moment, as I have been giving the baby spinach which is way too expensive from the shop.I've just bought some raised veggies beds so I hope to grow my own in the near future. They get carrot and beetroot every morning mixed with soaked hulled oats, striped sunflower and wheat.I top that with a couple of Dr Rob Marshalls supplements. It's occured to me that there's a similarity to what we do and the huamn fitness industry in building up our birds. Hope that's a help! Cheers Patrick
  21. Hi Kaz, I hope you are well! To be honest I wouldn't know what is the norm, but yes loving the new chicks! That's the great thing about the forum in being able to assess what everyone else does. I've also been visiting a few local breeders here in S.A. to get an idea of what thay do with their birds. It's so varied which is great! Cheers Patrick
  22. Hi all, Five chicks hatched today which is great. One was actually coming out of the shell when I arrived home tonight. Great stuff indeed! Cheers Patrick
  23. Hi all, Sunday for me means a bigger clean up than is possible during the week and stocking up on seed etc. There are now 17 chicks in the nest from this second round with a number of eggs still to hatch. I'd be happy with smaller clutches this time round to make it easier on both the birds and myself! Cheers Patrick
  24. Hi all, Just wanted to share with you one of my favorite birds at the moment. It's a Clearbody Opaline Grey Green Cock bird that I acquired at an auction recently. I hope to use him in my Spring breeding season if not before. I love the colour! Cheers Patrick
  25. Hi AB, All the chicks from this last round have left their parents and are in large stock cages holding on average eight chicks a cage. I have them in the birdroom where they can get use to the noise and activity and not be spooked by people.I am also beginning to get some of the better chicks use to the show cage for the future. Mi intention was to have one round in March/April and start again in the Spring which coincides with both many of the birds breeding cycle and the issue of the club rings for 2011. So not to over work the parents I have now decided to take another round now while it's working and breed my remaining pairs and outcrosses in the Spring. My plan is to keep the chicks I have bred long enough to assess their true potential.Which will probably mean having a member of the club visit my shed and help cull which is not worth keeping. Cheers Patrick
