  1. okay, I went out to check the new chick last night to see if it was going okay and..............surprise!!! there were 2 chicks (this hen has another hens eggs under her). This morning when I went out to check the birds I found I had another hatch out (from pair 8), but it was stone cold and not moving , so I got it out anyway and immediatly heated it up and it slowly started moving. I went and put it under another hen but it was to weak and she was just gonna flatten it so I bought it inside. I gave it a drop of sugar water and then attempted to give it some baby budgie mix, its crop looks to be fairly full so we will see how we go. It is moving around now so I have my fingers crossed.
  2. Wow, very interesting read. Lots of very different opinions. I have only been into budgie breeding for the past few months, although my mum bred budgies for about 20 years when I was younger and has just started up herself also. I started off with one aviary with a division down the centre, I had finches in one side and I had a few budgies in the other side (no nests at this stage). Whilst looking for budgies I got onto a friend who was going out of budgies he had about 30 budgies and also about 30 breeding cages and a few show carry cages (although he was a colony breeder had all his budgies together). My mum and I went halves and bought the lot for $300, but then a month or so later another friend approached me and offered me her 15 budgies and a big 3 bay bird cage, so now I also have that and another cage I got of my aunty. So I have got 5 cages with only 2-3 pairs in each exept one which has young birds and some older ones for sale in it, some hens are sitting on eggs some are not. I have also got 9 breeding boxes with pairs in them, so I am using both methods currently. But as I havnt had any eggs hatch out in the aviaries yet I am unsure of what will happen, originally when I got all of the breeding cages I was going to breed just in them, but after trialing a few pairs for weeks, some of them just wouldnt lay or go near the nest, so I just swapped them with other pairs in the aviary, and after about 2.5 weeks most of them were laying, and it also worked the other way, I had some that wouldnt even pair up in the aviary so I had to pair them up in breeding cages, now they are all laying. So for the moment I will be using both methods, but after reading some of the above posts as soon as I see a problem in the aviaries some birds will be getting moved.
  3. Well first baby has hatched out this morning, its a bit on the small side so hopefully it will do okay. And it is out of a pair that I forgot to post, cock is a green recessive pied and the Hen is a clear wing Violet. Hopefully we will see some more hatch out soon.
  4. Thank you so very much, you certainly know what you are talking about. I look forward to seeing what comes of these eggs. I will let everyone know what colors I get. Once again thank you Nubbly5
  5. Thanks for the tips, I am only learning that's why I came on here so you lovely people can help me out:) I have majority of them in breeding cages. I have 4 other aviarys, I have got 3 pairs in 2 of the cages, and 2 pairs in each of the others, I supply each cage with redgum logs and breeding boxes and always have more nests than pairs of birds. A lot of the birds shown are not bred from and are not going to be bred from some will be sold as I have a great deal of males without partners. I havn't had any chicks hatch out in the aviarys yet so I am not sure what is going to happen but for the moment they seem settled so I will leave them be for now, but if my chicks get attacked by another bird I will certainly take your advice and seperate them all.Thank you all again for your comments and advice :)Also would anyone like to help me out with some of the colors as I am only just learning about the genetics and mutations.
  6. Ohhh, okay thats fine I guess it will have to be a surprise then......will keep updated as to what hatches what.
  7. Here are the rest of my birds!!!! Thats it for now, I will ad more at a later date.
  8. Hi, I am not new to budgies but new to breeding them, I have had budgies for some time but have never really been interested in breeding them, but since my mum starting her breeding back up after not doing for over 6 years, I have been extremely interested so I have decided to pair up some of mine and begin breeding with them. I have also, over the last few weeks been researching all about budgie color genetics and mutations, I think I am slowly getting my head around it all but I know I still have a lot to learn. I have got some colony birds but then also some in breeding boxes, currently I have got 5 hens sitting on 5 or more eggs and about 3 or 4 more hens looking like sitting. I have posted some photos of my budgies for people to look at. [/img] Thats as much as I can fit in one post, I will make another post to ad more.
  9. okay I have started a new post as I didnt have enough room for all of my photos on the last post Once again you will have to excuse the quality of some of the photos as some of the hens are sitting and didnt really want their photos taken This is my 12th pair. My 13th pair. My 14th pair. This photo makes her look darker than she really is, was hard using the flash. My 15th pair. okay thats it for now, I have got pictures of other birds that are for sale, mostly blue males but I will post them at a later date.
  10. okay, so I am new to this uploading from photobucket so I will see how I go, I will just post photo's of the pairs so that people help me out by telling me what colors they are, and what color babies I may get. Some of the photos are not so good because I took them at 7am this morning so the hens were out of the nest and I could get photos without disturbing them too much. This is my 1st pair they are in an aviary with 1 other pair. This is my 2nd pair who share an aviary with the above pair. This is my 3rd pair who share an aviary with 2 pairs below. This is my 4th pair. This is my 5th pair. This is my 6th and 7th pair who both share an aviary together. All 4 birds sitting in their pairs. One pair Photo of the pied male on his own. My 8th pair, who live in an aviary with the following 2 pairs. My 9th pair. My 10th pair. They are the 2 sitting together at the back. The following birds are all being kept in Breeding cages. My 11th pair. My 12th pair. http://i674.photobucket.com/albums/vv105/murraycavaliers/DSCF6908.jpg I am having trouble getting anymore to load so I will put another reply.
  11. Sorry, as I did say I am only learning , I am going to post photos of them all today and then you can let me know...
  12. okay here I go, I have had budgies for some time all in outside aviaries, I have just recently decided to breed them. I have paired some of them up and I am just wondering what color babies I am likely to get, although from reading some posts I know without the parents genetics this may be difficult. As I have not really been worried about breeding from them before I was never really concerned about knowing all about the genetics and mutations......etc. So now that I have decided to breed from them I have spent weeks and weeks researching all about genetics and the mutations...etc, and I think I am slowly getting my head around it. So my point being I would like some opinions on my pairing and what color babies they are likely to hatch out. As I am just learning my colors you may have to be patient, I may get some wrong. I will start with the 4 pairs I have in Breeding cages: Cage 1 has got a normal violet blue Cock and a mauve dominant pied Hen. Cage 2 has got a normal blue opaline Cock and a violet opaline cinnamon wing Hen. (sitting on 7 eggs) Cage 2 has got a recessive pied cock and a violet clear wing Hen. (sitting on 7 eggs) Cage 4 has got a dominant blue pied Cock and a Sky Blue spangle Hen. In the outside aviaries there are the following pairs: Aviary 1 (3 pairs) 1st pair- Recessive pied Cock and a normal grey Hen. (sitting on 6 eggs) 2nd pair- Sky blue clear wing Cock and a normal dark mauve Hen. (sitting on 5 eggs) 3rd pair- Normal grey Cock and a recessive blue? pied Hen Aviary 2 (2 pairs) 1st pair- Dominant blue pied Cock and Normal Blue hen. 2nd pair- Both normal blues. Aviary 3 (3 pairs) 1st pair- Golden face mauve Cock and a clear wing sky blue hen. 2nd pair- Normal blue Cock and a blue spangle Hen 3rd pair- Cobalt blue Cock and a dominant green pied hen. ( Not sure about this Hen, will post photos tomorrow) Aviary 4 (2 pairs) 1st pair- Recessive green pied Cock and Blue dominant pied hen. 2nd Pair- Grey dominant pied Cock and sky blue clear wing hen. Well thats about it, some of my colours may not make sense as I am just learning, please feel free to correct me, I will try post pictures of the pairs soon. cheers
