  1. I went out just before dark tonight and "Surprise" I found another hen had started laying, so I now have a normal blue hen x Blue and white dom pied cock sitting on one egg Thanks, it was touch and go there for a while for 2 of the chicks but they are all good now, mum is doing a really good job and this is my first time breeding and my first nest of babies so I am rather proud I went out this afternoon and *OMG* the chicks crops were so so full, she is doing a wonderful job, their crops were that full they could barely move
  2. okay so for health reasons I have had to remove my Albino hen from the breeding cage and foster her eggs to my blue spangle hen, so now my blue spangle hen is on 6 eggs , but I am thinking just from looking at them the the eggs are still very clear so I am guessing they may be infertile
  3. Apart from the swelling she seems very normal and healthy, I have separated her away from the male and fostered the eggs to my blue spangle hen who is sitting on 2 eggs of her own, although just with a glance at the eggs they all seem clear so I am thinking that they are infertile I will candle them soon and know for sure. I will just keep an eye on her over the next few days and see what happens. She seems to be pooping fine, as she is sitting on eggs she only comes out mostly in the morning and lays a big poo.

  5. okay, so I live out in the middle of no where and I am pretty sure our closest avian vet is 2 hours away....I went and sore my vet who happens to live up the road and she said the same thing either tumor or some problem with oviduct she said she should be okay to stay in with the cock as she doesnt seem to think it is a disease. So what to do what to do???? Because she has been laying and the swelling appeared from one day to another I think it's very likely that she has an inflamation of the oviduct. I would ask your vet from up the road for an anti-inflamatory drug, perhaps Baytril? I wouldn't just leave her with the cock bird, I would foster the eggs if possible and place her into a nice, warm cage on her own. Try PMing Chrymosome or Hamish as they are Vet students. Best of luck! Thanks Renee, will do!!
  6. okay so I have posts all over the place so I decided to make a journal and tell everyone whats been going on and what happens in the future, must easier just to come to one place okay so I have got my Albino hen x Grey and white dom pied on 4 eggs. I have a Blue cinnamon wing spangle Hen x Blue spangle cock on 2 eggs. and I have got a Violet spangle hen x Yellow and green rec pied on 5 chicks all doing very well. I have also got a lot of others pairs, some in breeding cages and some in aviaries, I will update about them as they start to lay I have added a picture of my 5 chicks: As you can see I have now placed bedding in with the chicks as per the advice of some other breeders thanks guys

  8. I am also guessing that because of the swelling her vent area would not have been easily accessed by the cock, so chances are her eggs or at least some of her eggs may be infertile, guess I will just have to wait a few days then candle them.
  9. I did say I only noticed this yesterday, I did check her over before breeding her and there was no sign of it then. I have posted a photo now so hopefully someone has some idea of what it may be or whats causing it.
  10. okay so I went out and she had layed her 4th egg so I caught her very quickly and took a photo, not sure you will see much from it, but I have noticed it isnt really a lump it feels just like swelling but it is way too big for just egg swelling, I would think anyway
  11. Well I have only just noticed it there yesterday, and I haven't noticed it there before. She is already separated as she is on eggs in a breeding cage . It doesn't seem to have gotten worse and over all she is a very healthy bird. I could take a photo but not sure you could see much from it as she is a pretty feathery bird, she is due to lay her 4th egg today so I dont wanna upset her. I will try get picture soon The reason I say it may be a tumor is because my mum has her sister and she found a tumor in the same spot not long ago on her

Thank you very much I am hoping to also get some very nice colored babies this year as it is my first time at breeding.
  13. Just this afternoon I have noticed that my Albino hen has a massive soft lump in front of her vent area, and no its not just swelling from laying eggs ( she is currently on 3 eggs, 4th due tomorrow), the lump is a little smaller that the area of a 20 cent piece, it is soft to touch. Also areas of the lump are a light purple color almost like bruising.Could it be a tumor of some kind?
  14. Thanks KAZ.......figured someone would be able to tell me :thankyou:
  15. Hi I got given a new Hen today and I was just wondering if someone could tell me what color she is?

I have got pictures of my birds in other posts but figured this is probably where I should have them, I went out today and took some new pics, plus I have posted pics of my new blue spangle hen. This is a picture of my first nest of babies, 5 in total. Oldest one is a week old. I have not got all of my birds pictured as I have a lot in breeding cages and it is very hard to get pics of them without upsetting them so I am leaving them be for now :)The birds below are my 2 new hens. The first hen I think??? is a Blue spangle and the second one I have no idea !!! :thankyou: I was given this pair of hens of a friend who thought they had a pair and was trying to breed them but when I told him he had 2 girls he told me to take them......so I went and picked them up today the green coloured hen is a little on the small side so not sure whether I will pass her on or try pair her with one of my larger males, still undecided
  17. I havn't been on for a few days so thought I would leave an update. The little chick I was talking about in the last post has done extremely well, it is just as big as the hens original 2 babies. Since then she has hatched out another of her own also doing very well, but just yesterday I had to place another birds chick under her as the other hen wasn't feeding it and the hen it is under is currently the only hen I have with chicks. So I have a violet spangle hen sitting on 2 of her own babies and 3 from other pairs ( 8th , 1st and 14th pairs), so if successful in rearing all 5 she should have a very colorful nest of babies, the only problem arising from all this is that the hen has still got 3 eggs of her own but going by the dates I am thinking at least one is bad but because the eggs are so dirty it is hard for me to tell so I am just leaving them until her time is up. How will this hen go if the 2 good eggs do hatch? will she be able to rear 7 babies? and if so what is the chances of them being small and weeding because of the large number? I guess for now I will just wait and see :emoticon112:

I am a stay at home mum who lives out on a farm, so I pretty much have nothing to do, this is why I went into breeding budgies...A. because I love them and B. Because I needed something to do to fill my day in. It turns out now that I spent most of my time with my birds and not inside. I guess I have a lot more time on my hands than the average person, so I guess I can afford to be patient

Cool, thanks again for your help KAZ. You really know your stuff....how long have you been breeding for? it is good actually because my mum and I have been after Lutino and Albino Budgies in our area and have had no luck so far. While we are on the subject my mum has got 2 yellow recessive pied paired and they have got a red eyed baby is it albino or lutino

Kaz, That is great, I have just read right though all the posts. mind you it took me over an hour and that was just scan reading. What an amazing setup, so going by the dates you have being doing this setup for how long? what an awesome job you guys have done, it may be taking you a while but my gosh it is defenetly worth the wait. I love your birds, would love to have a setup like that, sometime in the future maybe I cant wait for more updates!!

Thanks Kaz, I thought that may have been the case but as I am knew to this I thought I would get an experts opinion I know this will sound dumb but does this mean that the baby will be either Lutino or Albino or will it just carry the red eyes?

I have got both aviary birds and breeding cage birds, for the breeding cage birds when they get low I just tip whats in their containers into a bucket then refill with all fresh seed (daily if need be), I wait until we get a windy day, take my bucket of old seed and an empty bucket out into the wind and just slowly pour the old seed into the empty bucket, by the time you have finished all of the husks have blown away and all you will have left in your bucket is full seed and no husks , then I reuse it by topping up the self feeders in the aviaries, they do waste a lot of seed in some of the self feeders but this does not bother me as I have got quails in the bottoms of all my aviaries and they love it. I know my method might seem to some people as being "tight" but my theory is that once the husks are gone that whats left is perfectly good seed. Liv's method is a great idea, but I have got so much greenery around our farm that my birds get abundances of it and absolutely love it  I have only been cleaning out my cabinets once a week as I have been told that cleaning the birds cage to often during breeding may disturb them, so the seed of the floor of my breeding cages gets pretty dirty, especially when the hen is sitting on eggs (they make a lovely mess). So I just pull out the slides from the floors and the seed and mess gets turfed out the shed door, the local parrots clean it up pretty quick

Hi, I have just had 3 babies hatch out in the past 48 hours. 2 under one hen and 1 under another, my question is why is it that 1 of the babies was born with red eyes and the others have got black eyes? neither pairs of parents are Lutino or Albino. There is probably an easy explination for my question but I have never bred before this is my first time. Is it possible that they could have thrown back to the Lutino or Albino?
  25. Yes it was lucky, I have the flu at the moment and it is keeping me up all night, so at 6am I went out and checked and thats when I found it, I have placed it back under the hen now and I am checking around the clock. It still seems as though she is squashing it more so than keeping it warm. If it is still looking like its not going to be okay under her I will bring it in, only thing is I do not have a heat source good enough to keep its temperature right.
