  1. okay thanks very much , this little bird is about to go to my nephew as he is very friendly already and my nephews died
  2. okay so I know this is going to sound really dumb, but I know my colours sort of ( thanks Kaz ) but not that well. So I get the DF and the Spangle part but not the suffusion....a little help???
  3. I am lucky enough to have most of my aviaries in full shade at the hottest part of the day, but being in Northern Victoria my birds still feel it, we are getting one hot day after another here. I have shifted all of my breeding cages over to the dairy as it seems to be about 5 degrees cooler over in the big shed than it does at the house. The only problem that seems to be occurring due to the heat is the fact that it is literally cooking my eggs . We have had days of 46+ here and even in the shade the birds still get way to hot, I have opted for the sprinkler on the roof of the aviaries now just to try cool it down for them. I had 2 hens due to hatch 3 days ago and after the day of 47 I have just been out and they are all dead in the shell .If we keep getting these hot days I am going to put all my birds out and rest them until after the summer heat.
  4. I am just wondering what colour you would call this little fella, he is out of 2 sky blue spangles. There are 2 other babies out of the same nest they were both normal blues. You cant see it overly well in the picture but he has got slight grey marking on his wings. Any ideas??
  5. okay so what you have decided is that both are split for blue????? is this correct??
  6. Hi I have got 2 Lutino's they laid 5 eggs but only hatched 2 they are now colouring up, one is a very bright Lutino and the other is an Albino. Does this mean that either mum or dad are split for Albino?? and if so which one Mum or Dad??
  7. I have given him a good feed and put it out with mum and dad again to see what happens, maybe now that it is a bit healthier she will keep feeding it
  8. Thanks Maesie...I might try that but not sure how it will go as mum has 4 other bigger babies and both times I went out there the parents had pushed the baby right to the other end of the breeding box away from them and the other babies.
  9. I have bought one of my chicks inside as its mum hadn't fed it since last night and he was looking a bit worse for wear. I have decided to try and hand raise it, but I am not sure how I am going to keep it warm as I have no source of heat for it. Any ideas would be great. By the way the chick is 4 days old so he is a youngster
  10. okay so it seems one of my other hens has decided she is going to be a plucker too, only this time this hen has waited until all the pin feathers have well and truly started to come through then plucked them.......I am wondering could it be the hot weather? does the hen think that the chicks are getting too hot or something to that affect and plucking them thinking it may cool them down? I know this is probably not the cause but I can't think of any other reason. :WobbleSign:
  11. here are some pics of my chicks, I have younger ones too but I didnt want to upset them so I will take pics of them as they get older.
  12. I will try and get some pics today but, they are pretty bald babies around their heads and necks . I have a fair idea on what colors they are but then I have gotten the colors wrong lots of times on here I will try and get some pics today but, they are pretty bald babies around their heads and necks . I have a fair idea on what colors they are but then I have gotten the colors wrong lots of times on here Here are some pics of some of the babies. I will post other pics under my journal.
  13. I have just been outside and taken some pictures of my new birds.... This is a picture of my youngest Ino baby This is a picture of my new Lutino pair. This is my new Albino hen and her partner. This is another new hen. Colour?????? This is a picture of 2 out of the 3 babies that are now out in the aviary. And the last photo, it's just a random that I took while walking through the aviary.
  14. Dad is split ino and that makes it a little hen chick. Will be albino if mum is split blue, or lutino if she isnt. okay so we have white pin feathers so mum must be split for blue, correct?? Also my grey and white dominant pied hen x normal grey cock have hatched an Ino too, does same thing apply here? I finally got a pair of Lutino's so we will get Lutino babies now , also bought a new hen which I believe is a........hmmm, I will post photos of her later and ask what colour she is 99% chance I will get it wrong if I try and guess I have started to mark my eggs as I got myself a little confused with some babies this time round.
  15. No....I did not "Just go away for a few days", I had my mum checking my birds 3 times a day for the 2 days I was gone, and yes I put in some Millet and some chunks of bark which seems to have done the trick, and as I said she has stopped now and the chicks are getting all their pin feathers regrowing.
  16. Agreed....now how old are they ? Probably the same age as they were when your previous question did not get a response I check on here mutliple times a day - I am addicted, i know. Why doesn't everyone else? I do agree with Kaz though, age is a very important here. So the question again... How old are the chicks? So sorry for not replying...I had to go away for a few days and only just got back tonight. They are 2 weeks 5 days old today. The plucking seems to have stopped although not before nearly completely plucking their heads. I can actually tell what color they are now Normal sky blue, Sky blue Grey wing, Sky blue spangle.
  17. I only have one other hen on babies at the moment and she has got 4, 2 big and 2 smaller ones and my Ino is in that nest so I don't wanna risk my Ino getting flattened by bigger babies other wise I would move them right away. I have been looking for Ino budgies and havn't been able to find any in our area, now that I have bred one of my own I don't wanna have it squashed :fingerscrossed:
  18. Thanks Kaz, and no its not only the down feathers she has stepped it up and it seems she has started to pluck the actual pin feathers.......I will try to take photos later. I have already got seed in the nest box, as she was not feeding them well so I put heaps of seed in the nest box hoping she would feed them better (it worked) they always have full crops when before hand they never used to , I guess I wil just keep and eye out to make sure it doesn't get any worse. :fingerscrossed:
  19. I have a nest with 3 chicks in it and over the last few days I have noticed that they don't seem to be as feathery as they should be. Their pin feathers have been coming through for about 10 days, when I went out this morning one of the chicks has got a bald patch on top of its head and a bald back, and the other 2 have just got bald backs. So my question is what can I do to stop this and how do I know who is is doing it Mum or Dad? :fingerscrossed:
  20. Hi I have a pair of budgies I am going to post a picture of, I am after guesses as to what color their babies are. The babies are out of the nest already so I know what color they are, but I am just interested to see how many peoples expectations are right . I will post photos of the chicks at the end of the day and see who guessed correctly.
  21. Dad is split ino and that makes it a little hen chick. Will be albino if mum is split blue, or lutino if she isnt. Thanks Kaz, I knew you would be able to tell me .........I was so surprised I was expecting her to have just blues or greens and I forgot to mention mum is a green spangle...not sure if this makes any diffenerence. I have moved my 3 older babies into a cage on their own. I have seen them eating and drinking on their own and mum has started laying again and the babies kept getting back in the nest and busting her eggs. I have them in a small cage inside at the moment just to make sure they are going to fair okay without mum and dad. Guess I wil have to wait to see if I have a Lutino or an Albino...I will keep posted
  22. okay so I am a little exited...I finally have an Ino baby  . Went out this afternoon and it had hatched...and it has very red eyes. Not sure if it is going to be a Lutino or an Albino...but I guess I will wait and see.....for those interested it had hatched out of my green hen and normal blue cock........is this possible?
  23. The green hens 3rd egg hatched but when I found it, it was flat and lifeless.....so me being me, I rushed it inside and breathed on it for about half and hour and it eventually came to life . I heated it up and fed it, it seemed to be moving around fine and cheeping at me so I went and placed it back under mum....it is huddling into the other babies so that has to be a good sign...I will keep an eye on it over the next few hours and hopefully all will be good.......will update in the morning
  24. Yes they can be bought in at night, after today's discovery I had decided to do this 1 of the hens that had the bad eggs has had babies before and the other I am unsure but she looks like a mature bird, this is her first lot of eggs for me...the only time the hens ever come of the nest that I can tell is when I go in the aviary. The hens I have in the breeding cages are fine they are hatching babies okay just the ones in the aviaries......I have 3 different hens in 3 different aviaries if its a disease whats the chances of it being in all 3 aviaries????. I have hens sitting on good eggs in the same aviaries :hap: This is soooo confusing........and ennoying  Guess I will just bring the cats in and hope that, that was the problem if it happens again then I will get worried  . I forgot to mention.....I have an owl that lives in the tree next to the house could it also be a possible candidate for being a menace to my hens? Hi Tonilee, I also wondered what caused d.i.shell chicks I had one hen lay 9 eggs, waited well past when first were due, she finally hatched 3 from 9. She was, I think first time mum and very scatty , she would fly off eggs kicking them around etc. every time I went in aviary. Mine were probably half formed when I checked them but all fertile. Even when she had chicks ready to leave nest she would hide under them. Maybe it's first time Mum's they may settle down with next batch. Fingers crossed anyway.Thanks.....I am going to bring my cats in just incase ......I am going to wait til they lay their first eggs again then I will only check them every time they are due to lay again...I am going to keep away from the aviary as much as I can to see if it makes a difference. Hopefully it is just because they were upset and scuttled around a bit too much, and this time round we may actually get fertile eggs that make it the distance
  25. okay so now I am really beginning to get peeved in the last week I have thrown out 2 sets of eggs, which were all fertile. It seemed that they had died early on and dried up but you could clearly see that they were fertile. I have just been out in the aviary and thrown out 6 more eggs same problem all fertile but had died early on and dried up. My question is could my cats be the problem? Is it possible that my cats are jumping up on the wire late at night and scaring the hens out while they are in sleep mode and they are not getting back on the eggs so they go cold and die???? I have seen the cat sitting at the base of the aviary some mornings when I get up but have never actually seen them jump on the wire. The only reason I say this is that the hens are barely off the nest at all during the day so this is the only thing I can think of that would be happening and going on un-noticed because its happening at night and by the time I get up the hens are back on the eggs, but unfortunatly they will have already died due to getting cold during the night. This may not be the reason for what is happening but I can't think of any other reason why the eggs would all do this....if you have any ideas as to what is happening or what I can do to prevent it plz dont hesitate to tell me......I am at my wits end
