Full Spectrum Lighting
Well , it is hard to say if it suits reptiles , it will suit to us The following info is from Vikipedia . Human health-related effects of UV radiation [edit] Beneficial effects [edit] Vitamin D The Earth's atmosphere blocks UV radiation from penetrating through the atmosphere by 98.7%. A positive effect of UVB exposure is that it induces the production of vitamin D in the skin. It has been estimated that tens of thousands of premature deaths occur in the United States annually from a range of cancers due to vitamin D deficiency.[7] Another effect of vitamin D deficiency is poor absorption of calcium which can lead to bone diseases. Some studies show most people get adequate Vitamin D through food and incidental exposure.[8] Many countries have fortified certain foods with Vitamin D to prevent deficiency. Eating fortified foods or taking a dietary supplement pill is usually preferred to UVB exposure, due to the increased risk of skin cancer from UV radiation.[8] [edit] Aesthetics Too little UVB radiation leads to a lack of Vitamin D. Too much UVB radiation leads to direct DNA damages and sunburn. An appropriate amount of UVB (which varies according to skin color) leads to a limited amount of direct DNA damage. This is recognized and repaired by the body. Then the melanin production is increased which leads to a long lasting tan. This tan occurs with a 2 day lag phase after irradiation, but it is much less harmful and long lasting than the one obtained from UVA. However some tanning lotions and sprays available in the market don't require UV exposure. [edit] Medical applications Ultraviolet radiation has other medical applications, in the treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo. UVA radiation can be used in conjunction with psoralens (PUVA treatment). UVB radiation is rarely used in conjunction with psoralens. In cases of psoriasis and vitiligo, UV light with wavelength of 311 nm is most effective.[citation needed] [edit] Harmful effects An overexposure to UVB radiation can cause sunburn and some forms of skin cancer. In humans, prolonged exposure to solar UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eye, and immune system.[9] However the most deadly form - malignant melanoma - is mostly caused by the indirect DNA damage (free radicals and oxidative stress). This can be seen from the absence of a UV-signature mutation in 92% of all melanoma.[10] UVC rays are the highest energy, most dangerous type of ultraviolet light. Little attention has been given to UVC rays in the past since they are filtered out by the atmosphere. However, their use in equipment such as pond sterilization units may pose an exposure risk, if the lamp is switched on outside of its enclosed pond sterilization unit.

Full Spectrum Lighting
Hi Shannon , Thanks for your promnpt response . I hope I understand your question right (Sorry , if I judged it wrong , I can be thick smetimes when communicating in English), the budgies can get direct sunlight for a limited time if they choose to get as there are shade places that they can hide , mainly the end of the breeding cabinets and the aviary . I had not decided yet where to place this additional lightening but , I will keep their option about lightbathing .

Crushed Coral
Hi Renee , I hope grinding the boiled and owened (I am not sure if I have done right to use owen as a verb , apologies in advance for possible mistakes about my English) egg shells in a slicer robot is adequate ? By the way , sorry for the typing mistake in the soft wood as it should be soft food :hi: Never the less , I am planning to place a piece of lime as their chewing material , I guess this is nothing to do with their crops .

Crushed Coral
Hi Linda , Thanks for your answer . My buddies get grained egg shells with the soft wood and I am also ordering Calcivet with some more products from Vetafarm recently but I am just exercising on additional ways . I have never looked the matter from your point and I was believeing they were crushing already dead corals , I do not remeber now where I get this , but will have a search . As a person maintained lots of corals , I would mean no harm and not purchase if they are killing the living to have me an easy maintenance of the PH and calcium levels in the aquarium water .

Crushed Coral
Hi , I was jut brain storming about different ways to supply mineral stock to budgies . Apart from budgies , I am an aquarium hobbist by having seven tanks with cichlids from different lakes for the last 20 years . Tropheus species from lake Tangalika needs a moderately hard water to live on and crushed coral sand is recommended to keep the mineral levels (especially calcium) high , it is very cheap and natural , made from dead corals and can be found in different sizes , I have a 50 kg stock of 0-1 mm grains . Would you think will it be a good idea to add this to budgies daily served soft wood ? Sorry , if this question is very odd for an experienced budgie owner , but you may want to take my budgie hatchling degree written on the left just under my name into consideration and I usually look more smart when I am not thinking

Do you think to use Calcivet twice a week with the egg shells added (only the ones used when preparing the soft food , not additionally) could cause an overdose ?

I regularly use Vanodin , it is hard to say good or bad as I had no chance to benchmark it with another product , but as far as I am concerned I had never faced with a bacterial problem .

Chemicals That Should A Breeder Obtain
Hi , I am new to the forum and not sure if I am sending this under the right heading , if not I would appreciate some help forthe correct location . It is always not well possible o find locally specific products that are dedicated to budgerigars and their breeders , after spending time in reading the forum , I have decided to obtain Vetafarm Calcivet via an Australian shop that offers international sales . As it will be more beneficial to get the vital produts (for a breeder) all together rather than ordering them one by one , I would like to learn your suggestions for such products . Thanks in advance .

Doughter And Mom Nesting Together
I have a pair just had their first clutch for the year and the last of their youngs was out of the nest a few days ago . Yesterday , I have found this last baby again in the nest , when I checked early in the morning I saw her sitting with mom and sharing the two eggs which probably have recently been laid , may be her grandparents babysitters ? This is the first time , I am facing this , is there anyone who have experienced the same ?

Bleeding
Hi Everybody , I would like to benefit from your experiences on taking care of wounds as I have done a mistake to carry two pairs in a box for a quick travel and in no more than ten minutes a male is attacked by the other pair's female on the neck , the bleeding has stopped in a short while and I have been watching the cock carefully for the last 24 hours , there seems no stress as he is very active and continously sending messages from his quarantine to his mate What precautions should I implement to prevent any infection risks , should I clean his neck ? If yes with what ? Thanks in advance for all your responses . PS : The mate of this cock has already punsihed me for the mistake , she bite my finger when I was tryin to relocate her from the box and have not opened her jaws even after I freed her into the cage .
