Old Fashioned Sewing Box...
The little boxes for fishing things are great for sorting out knick knacks and buttons, too. I think they are for fishing tackle. I'm not quite sure what is included under tackle. Yes, my grandmother passed on her skills to me, too. She taught me to knit (successfully), whereas my mother had failed. She taught me tapestry and tried to teach me to tat as well. Chinese checkers was a favourite of hers and I remember happy times playing that with her. She had one of those mushroom things for darning socks. Thank goodness there is no need to do that now. Did you actually learn to darn socks?

Creature Comforts...
That was good. I liked the birds in the nest best. But........... check this out: My cockatiels were riveted by it. It is a canary whistling to a beautiful melody and has superb pictures.

Old Fashioned Sewing Box...
That is the most beautiful sewing box! You can treasure it and pass it on yourself one day. I think there is something about grandmothers and sewing boxes. My grandmother bought one for me and lined it herself. I still have it. It was just a tiny one suitable for a little girl. I now find that I need a lot of space for the reels of thread for my sewing machine and overlocker. My solution has been to buy a lovely big plastic tool box from a well known hardware store. It has a large compartment at the bottom and nice lift-out tray in which I can organise smaller items.

Another Scandinavian From Sweden...
It is a lovely set up. You will need to do a lot of housework to keep your living area clean. I like my birds to have room to move around inside, too. I have a sunroom which is for my birds only. I go in there to play with them but they are free to follow me around the house. I have two cockatiels sitting on me now as I type.

Purchasing Budgies
This is a very interesting discussion. It seems a pity to me that it is still under a heading about budgies sold in pet shops. That matter was left behind long ago. Can it be moved to a more appropriate heading?

Hey, Pearce Birdhaven is a very nice person who understands our child-like psyche very well. Only about eight of us entered that competition and we all won! I'm just wondering why she likes you better than us. Just kidding. Well done! Thank you Birdhaven, I'd have logged on just to play in the competition.

Your birds are stunning! You have taken wonderful photos of them. This forum is a great place to practise English and to learn more about birds. I am amazed at how much I have learned since I joined.

Hello!
Hi, featherybird. Welcome. I'm glad you decided to come in out of the cold. Yes, this is a good forum. I've had fun and learnt some stuff since I joined recently. Your birds are absolutely gorgeous.

Limit To How Many Words They Learn?
Yes, they do pick up what they hear from you most often, even when you did not intend them to. I was delighted when the first thing my first cockatiel learnt, was to laugh like me. My budgie does not talk but he knows all the tunes and sounds that all the cockatiels do. In fact, he taught my first cockatiel his first tune. He is still learning new ones. You have an amazing little bird there. I've never had one that could talk. Have you seen that film called "Paulie" about a parrot who could talk intelligently and who searched for his owner for about 20 years?

Bird Haven is probably in bed, so you will need to wait. I think the prize is a banner. Thank you for finishing the game. It was fun, wasn't it? :glare:

Budgie Friends
I had a budgie first. He was fascinated when I got my very gentle cockatiel. He begged to be introduced and promptly gave my tiel what for. Now I have eight tiels. I can tell you they all run for cover when the budgies are out. My little budgie hen is ferocious in her dislike of the tiels. If I lock up the tiels, the budgies spend most of their out-of-cage time on the tiels' cages tormenting them. In my opinion, if you have just the one budgie and want another bird, it'd probably be better to get another budgie.
