  1. Minty (did someone say that?) I was thinking of opal as well Birdy?
  2. Good news so far, Tikal is improving without treatment. Sorry for the mistake above, it was not exactly scaly "face" as she had it on her legs. I found some Ivermectin at a fodder store where they had 2 types, one for horses and one for livestock. Both were about $100 each, and I have no idea what the correct dosage for a budgie would be (you would have to dilute it wouldn't you?) so we didn't buy any. Talking to the staff of the store, they said I should not use Ivermectin for my bird unless it has an extreme case of scaly face (which it wasn't) as it is toxic and I would need to find the correct dose (even though I know a lot of people use it without problems). The woman even said that the Poultry Association used RP7 (lubricant oil) on chickens for mites. Anyway she had put me off buying the Ivermectin so I figured I would keep trying with olive oil or Vaseline or something.
  3. That blue hen looks a bit like Meeple (but bigger). To me she looks like the most normal one out of all of them... *not a show budgie fan*
  4. I think I might have a new budgie soon! How much do you want for him? TOO cute!
  5. 103. When you wake up at 10am to squawking angry budgies and think, "Oh God, I haven't fed the budgies!" then run and start grating carrot so fast that it goes up the walls
  6. I dunno. When was the last time you had a shower?
  7. Of course it's normal! What on earth would budgies do all day if they couldn't hang upside down??
  8. A few days ago (sorry for the late update) I rang the Glenside vet clinic to ask if they had Ivermectin. They said they probably could as they had seen my bird before but when they called back they said they couldn't sell it to me without an consultation appointment as they had seen the budgie for canker, not scaly face.... If I wanted them to do it for me I would have told them! SO... Thanks Liv for offering to look for some at the NEBS meeting If you can find some I'll come and get it so you don't have to post it.
  9. Cloud of squawking fluffy things...it's all good!
  10.
  11. Well... A few days ago we were having a meal with brown rice in it. I thought, surely budgies could eat rice? So I set a bowl of rice aside for the birds, put a spoonful in their veggie bowl and put the rest in the fridge. My budgies are usually nervous of new foods, and the only way I could get Meeple to eat new foods was to show her they were food (ie eating them myself in front of her!). So, I came up to them with the bowl, showed them the rice and then ate a bit of it. No luck. I woke up the next morning to a lot of happy chirping and saw two little rice-covered budgie faces looking curiously at me! So, I've been giving them some every morning as they seem to love eating it and throwing it all over the floor (a job for the vacuum cleaner ). Brown rice is a success with my birds! Has anyone else ever fed their budgies rice before???
  12. I think the vet is just trying to sell you pellets Budgies in the wild eat seed and veggies don't they? I don't see why your vet should want your budgie to be eating pellets as they are unhealthy for budgies. Is your budgie overweight? You didn't really say why the vet told you Lemon should be eating pellets instead of seed. Or didn't they say??? Personally I would NOT feed my budgies pellets. Budgies need a varied diet of different foods like seeds and greens to stay healthy. Even budgies with a seed only diet will be unhealthy as they NEED a variety of things.
  13. Found this on YouTube when looking at budgie vids  http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lpud8NeilCw Very cute except for a couple of bits where budgies get eaten by lizards and birds of prey

Check this out...I wish I had some Click here to see it!
  15. Thanks Kaz... I'm not sure what budgie clubs are in SA though I'll also try some vets in my area - just to see if they sell it, if some one has to do it for me I'll go to an avian vet.
  16. I am looking for a place (vet, budgie club etc.) in or around Adelaide that sells Ivermectin. One (possibly both) of my birds has scaly face and I need something to treat it with. I don't want to have to pay a fortune for a vet to do it for me, just somewhere that will sell it to me so I can treat them myself. Could you help me find somewhere??
  17. :hi:
  18. It's nice to know that some shop owners know how to look after their animals :hi:
  19. Sent details of Adelaide avian vet in PM  Hope it helps!
  20. I agree I thought budgies could eat hemp seeds and navy beans
  21. It seems like every pet shop you go into has budgies. And I have pretty much never seen a pet shop without budgies with problems of some sort(assuming that they sell budgies of course :budgiedance: ). One of my budgies has scaly leg mites (trying to get hold of some Ivermectin as I have tried with paraffin oil with no results) right now. She has had the mites once before which we treated and has only recently gotten them again :budgiedance: It seems to be a fairly simple disease to treat, if you do it in the early stages. BUT Don't you hate it when you walk in to a pet shop and see a cage of budgies, with barely enough room to perch, dirty water and a food bowl with nothing but seed hulls in it??? One of the most common things I can see in pet shop budgies is scaly face - birds who could have easily been treated and cured of the problem if the pet shop staff kept a spare bottle of Ivermectin or something to treat them with. The birds have over-long beaks and crusts all over their feet....If I could I would be tempted to take them home and get a vet to look at them. I just wish that the pet shops didn't only care about the MONEY - they shouldn't be selling animals if they can't take care of them!!! I haven't had a good experience with pet shops but that probably doesn't mean that there are NO good pet shops ------- surely there are some people who actually CARE about the birds they sell. WHY DON'T THEY CARE??? :question:I guess you wouldn't be running at a profit if you had to pay vet bills for some poor little budgie you bought for $5 but they should try to treat what they can by themselves rather than leaving the poor things to suffer in their tiny cage, probably infecting all the other birds with whatever it has. I'm probably repeating myself a lot here but I can't see why they can't be bothered. This is why I am annoyed with pet shops, especially for not treating budgies with scalyface as it can easily be done. :budgiedance:
  22. My budgies make the same noise, i don't think it's anything to worry about. It's mainly Meeple when she's fighting over something and being her usual bossy self Good point Elly, budgies are often more relaxed in a fully or partially covered cage.
