  1. My lad has been with me for about a week and a half and he seems to be really happy and adjusted. He was fully weaned when I got him and is eating well, healthy etc He loves getting out of the cage and having a look around but has shown zero interest in having a bath (except in the sand), playing with his foot toys or the toy in his cage that is a swinging thing with a bell on the bottom. Is there some secret to getting him to discover the delights of these things? he knows they are there - he just has no interest. He does, however, love fighting with his ladder I want him to have an interesting and fun life, will time teach him how to play with his bits and baubles or is there something I need to do??
  2. It must be the season for it...my boy got out of his cage today as well (useful lesson to me, make sure the door isn't open half an inch as he can get out!). Luckily we were inside and the dog hadn't gotten out of bed yet otherwise I'd be crying!

  4. THey are all beautiful. I especially love the pics of them as young'uns. Just gorgeous!
  5. I remember reading that you can feed tuna to budgies (don't know if it is true or not!) but more likely they do eat moths in the wild??? perhaps?

^ thx. I really hope I can get my lad to enjoy water like that. Took him out of his cage today and he had a look around but he didn't want to know the shallow plate of water I put out for him....dirty rascal. Still not decided on name....although Benny is now another possibility. I used to be undecided but now I'm not so sure
  7. Ohhhh we must have pictures! welcome to the forum and have a lovely Christmas

I'm so sorry for you loss. Take it easy on yourself and don't be afraid to bawl your eyes out when you need too. People that never had a close animal companion don't really understand how heartbreaking the situation is. I really hope you have some close family and friends that knew Buffy that you can feel comfortable speaking with and remembering her in a fond way.....I loved the story about the tennis balls...for sure you can only smile when you think of that! What a lucky little girl she was to have found you...you gave Buffy a life that was rich with love and experiences, for sure you were both blessed the day you found each other. Remember too that you gave her a gift by the way she left this world...there are so many suffering animals that don't have such endings (and humans if we are honest)...truley this is one of the biggest gifts you were able to give Buffy. I lost my baby boy, Erin, in September 07 and there isn't a day that I don't miss him but at the same time, there isn't a day that I don't thank God for sending him to me to enrich my life for all those years.
  9. Those are the cutest photos. Just lovely
  10. wow, I'm glad you asked that question because I would have assumed that the noise would be scarey to a budgie...nice to know I won't have to tip toe around the budgie as much as I have to with my dog!
  11. Oh that is so sweet it is making my teeth hurt  what a cutie, I love his colour too. does he sound like you Una?!

^^ thanks for the heads up about ~Una~'s birds...will go look... ^^ I can see why you think they do it to annoy you. I cleaned Mr Mr's cage this afternoon and it looked lovely...so he promptly 'refurbished' and turned it into budgie seed den again ...the little rotter

 at the boxer short comment. Who would think I'd get Mr Modesty as my budgie? hahaha Here he is in his glory: No name yet, thinking of Gill, Banjo or Pippin. Will probably go for Gill...have to see... He has perked up today and is boldly exploring his cage and throwing his seed everywhere. Very happy to sit on my finger and have me talk away but I resisted the urge to bring him out of the cage...will save that for tomorrow perhaps...don't want to rush him. He does do two things that are a little odd: 1) sits at the bottom of his cage for the odd nap (in addition to his perch). My other budgie (from years and years back) never used to nap in the bottom of the cage 2) sits in his feed tub, puts his head down into the corner and then goes *** for leather kicking the seek out the back behind him. Is he trying to give himself a bath? should I put a small plate of sand on the bottom of the cage? I really want to teach him to enjoy a very, very gently running tap...if I give him a plate to have a bath in will this put him off ever enjoying a tap? okay, I'm cheeky...I'm going to go search on the board for answers to the above as I know every new owner must ask the same things!

aw...what a nice forum with welcoming members! Grey dominant pied vs clearflight....mmm...I'll try and get a full frontal photo of him tomorrow and post (not that grey vs clear means a lot to me right now but I'm learning fast!) I bought the seed and millet etc from the breeder as I figured they would choose the best for their birds so hopefully at least things will taste like 'home' to him even if they don't look and sound like home right now. As you said, there is a lot of great info on this site especially training, he kinda has me confused because he seems to know the first few steps of training - not afraid of people, happy to sit on your hand, doesn't flinch etc etc...I have a feeling this bird will be training ME rather than the other way around He's so lovely...even when he's sleeping.

Hi All, I've been reading these boards the past few weeks as I knew I'd be getting a budgie for Christmas. I've had budgies before and have wanted one for a while, it's just been a matter of waiting till the time was right before bringing a new family member home. My new boy has yet to be given a name although I nearly called him 'Flatley' after Michael Flatley because he danced all the way home quite loudly in his little box! :laughter: There were many colourful and beautiful birds to choose from at the aviary but this little guy flew up to us as soon as we arrived and wasn't perturbed by my petting him through the cage. He kept returning to us while all the other birds were behaving like we were cats wanting to eat them. He is very curious but has been kinda quiet this afternoon...then again, after being in a huge aviary I'm sure it is all very new and (comparitively quiet) to him. He has had his wings clipped today as well (the breeder said I'd have more success training him this way but that they wings would grow back so he could fly which I want him to fly). I think he's beautiful.
