  1. awww great news!
  2. My search for "night fright" didn't yield any results similar to my problem at the moment, so here goes: We've noticed, on several occasions, that Django has been climbing the walls of his cage after the lights are turned off. His cage was moved to our study about 4 weeks ago. We turn down the blinds in the study when it gets dark outside, and cover him at about 8.30pm with a light tablecloth (folded about 3 times). The BF and I usually stay in the study at our computers until 10.30pm. The main light in the room gets turned off the same time we cover him, leaving a desk lamp for ambient light as we work at our desks. The nights have been warming up, so we started sleeping with our bedroom door open last night, and heard lots of "clink-clank" going on. I wasn't surprised, as the previous time it happened his cage was in the living room, and I had hung a long purple dress on the wall opposite from his cage. The dress was probably the reason he got scared and started climbing, so I took it down and left a lamp on overnight. The BF puts him on his top perch every night, but he jumps off anyway. We are unsure if he does his nightclimbing activity every night, but will monitor from now on. We're going to buy a night light this week and pop it in the room, hopefully that will help?

 I'm so sorry birdluv. RIP Tequila
  7. :fingerscrossed: He sounds like a fighter, and yes I agree with Daniela, please post pictures when he's feeling better!
  8. That's really interesting, and very different from human RBC! In Haematology, we were always taught that the absence of a nucleus in a mature red blood cell reduces energy usage and allows the cell to carry the highest amount of oxygen/carbon dioxide possible, so it's amazing to ponder how birds can still metabolise so quickly with all their RBC nuclei working away. Thanks for posting your slides Chryso :fingerscrossed:
  9. Just thought I'd post a video of Django talking, his vocabulary isn't that extensive yet, but he's managed to say "cutie pie" and "baby boy/bird" with much accuracy after two months of practice, and he's picked up on "Are you a cutie pie?" as well in two weeks! Watch Note: I know that the wire ties holding up the ladder in the back will concern some, and I'm actually going to remove them this afternoon and leave the ladder free-swinging. Django's never touched them, not even a nibble, I swear! :fingerscrossed:

So adorable I've never seen a budgie roll on its back before and it must be so cute to watch!

That must be so much fun! Awesome photo
  12. Such a cutiepie!
  13. Such lovely photos! P.S. your userpic/avatar scared me a little at first, I thought it was a real ant running on my screen!
  14. Excellent job, what a great end product for $60
  15. Watched them all, he is so polite! Does he call out to the birds outside frequently?
  16. Charley is a very talented budgie... my jaw dropped when I heard him say, with perfect intonation, "Charley's a bad, bad boy"! Please post more videos when you can!
  17. The other day, I was on the computer when Django hopped to his water dish and took a few sips, less than a metre away! It was like being given a nonverbal thumbs up from him that said, "You're okay, human!" He now says "cutiepie" and "baby bird" in that funny budgie voice. It is so adorable! He's also become quite fond of coming out of the cage on his own... a thick natural branch extends all the way from the back of the cage to outside the main door. When the door's open he waddles out cautiously and flies laps around the living room, landing on his perching stand next to the window where he chirps and chirps to the rainbow loris outside. In the morning when the BF uncovers the cloth cover, he is right next to the main door in anticipation of being let out. I don't think he'll ever be a very affectionate bird, we give him cheek and neck rubs every day which he enjoys, but he's not for close contact, which I guess is okay with us, as he's progressed so much!
  18. I'm sorry for your loss. RIP Turbo

He sounds like he is trying to make some specific sounds amid the cheerful chatter. Django has been chattering in a similar fashion for about two months now and his vocalisations have just begun to sound like "cutiepie", which we've been teaching him for the past 5 months!
  20. Congratulations Kaz, love that photo, he looks like he is giving you the evil eye, plus spiky feathers!

RIP Junior Boss From your heartfelt eulogy he seemed like a great personality. I'm sorry for your loss.
  22. Toshiro is an angel indeed... hope Kiwi feels better soon!
  23. Going through his first major moult... This is what he looked like a week after he was brought home: We called him Stumpy for a while, even though he already had a name. Which is why my siggy says "stumpy no more!" :emoticon112:
  24. She's coming around just great Eating millet from your hand is a good sign of initial trust.
  25. Thanks, maesie. We'd never have gotten this far without your advice about keeping training sessions short! That's great to hear, featherybird I'm a first time budgie owner, and when the BF first got Django I was equally confused about his unusual behaviour. Would never have learnt as much as I know now without the BBC forums and help from other members!
