  1. Can you post a picture of your set up and that will help us to advise you ? One hen doing it here and there can happen but if a few are there is a problem with something in your set up.Kaz, sorry should have read the post before i posted it.the birds arent going into the boxes. they hang of the side of the flight cages. One hen today i noticed had dropped her egg on the floor, and a few days ago i noticed another had done the same, but that hen has been laying eggs in the box before this egg on the floor. Yes i did fix the issue with the slanting issue. Went and got the wood and stuck that at the bottom of the boxes so it made them level. did the job.Was thinking of putting wood shavings in the boxes. what do you think, or just best to leave them plain?
  2. what is that in the next box? looks like some sort of grass, dried.
  3. have recently paired my birds up and have noticed a few havent went into the breeding boxes at all, but are laying eggs. they are just cracking, as the breeding cabinets are made from the flight cages. Any reason why they arent going into the boxes and laying the eggs?
  4. The avery is brand new, cabinets brand new. He is the only bird out of all my birds like this. even the hen is fine that he is paired with. Im going to take him out today and give him a spray and let him sunbake for an hour in the sun so he drys off.
  5. I agree. There was a bloke here in sydney that used to own a pet shop, and used to breed budgies in the back of there bird shop. he bred a black budgie, and there were alot of offers thrown around. The bird ended up going to Don bourke, along with the parents that bred it. Not sure if anything was ever written about this. I actually saw the bird, but to me it just looked really ugly, with really weird markings. Must admit had never seen anything like it, this is going back years ago. Maybe 5 years.
  6. What is everyone's thoughts on breeding cabinets with the boxes. Does anyone put anything in there boxes or just leave them as is? Ive heard some people put wood shavings in there. thoughts?
  7. this has happened since him being put down to breed. he is still in great condition and chasing the hen around whenever she comes out of the box wanting more action. they have 7 eggs already. He is still very energetic. i thought maybe he might have just plucked them cause he was bored.do you think it would be alright to spray him even though he is breeding? Just take him out to spray him? ivermec spot??????????
  8. catching the bird isnt a problem. i just noticed that it is getting worse today. Ive just paired up some more birds today and i try and leave them for a few days without disturbing them.
  9. One of my good Pieds, over a 2 week period has lost feathers on one leg, and alot of feathers under its belly more towards its bum area. It is in a cabinet and the hen is sitting on 7 eggs. WOuld it be worth spraying the bird for lice / mite, or is it more like he is just plucking them himself? Can you spray the birds whilst in the cabinets for lice / mites whilst in the cabinets? If the spray gets in there water can it be bad?
  10. I am wanting to breed size and quality. these are only a few of my birds, i had enough of it taking so long to download the pictures onto photobucket. I am wanting to breed pieds, and my aim is to try and bred yellow face violet pieds. I have some good violets and violet pieds that i have paired so it shall be good to see what i get out of these. Then i shall put the babies to some yellow face with and see what i end up with.

  13. Let me know what you think.
  14. Some more. these are babies. What are your thoughts. Would these be up to standard to show? http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp42/bu.../Budgies006.jpg
  15. A pair http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp42/bu.../Budgies005.jpg
  16. What are you putting your spangles to? Normals or double factor?
  17. How old is the person across the road that does it for you. I would like for a teenager to come twice a week and clean and feed the birds for me. Saves me doing it and allows me to concentrate on the important things. Dont think much can go wrong with someone doing this, as long as they are careful.
  18. If you click on my name and look up my topics you will see all I have posted about my birds including photos. I am classed as a novice at showing but I do pretty well with my birds in shows. I aim to breed quality birds of a show standard and colour does not come into it at this stage. My preference is for pieds. thats exactly what im wanting to bred to, Pieds. Here in Sydney not many breeders seem to have alot of pieds. Ive been to about 8, and out of these people, the most any of them had was 4 pairs. Non of them had alot of pieds within the birds. It is hard trying to get good pieds. I have been lucky to find some good ones, but there isnt alot of good birds floating around at present, and i think breeders know this, so they are asking big dollars for there birds.
  19. How much would you say each rack of 4 would have cost you to set up including the cages?
  20. the great advantage with Kaz's system is all of the husks and dusk wouldnt go everywhere like our setup. Majority of it would be caught on the sides and end up down the bottom of the racking. Do you put anything in the bottom of your boxes like shavings or anything like that?
  21. Non bird people who mind our birds.... are notorious for assuming birds have food when all they have is husks. Most often when birds get sick from being looked after by "friends" its due to starvation. Non bird people think their food dish is full when it isnt. The day you arrive home is the day the minder puts fresh food and water in and its usually too late by then. Many a bird has been lost this way. Perhaps in this case too ? id dare say there could very well be a big chance of that. wasnt very happy as i lost my 2 best birds.
  22. Do you clean it daily, and give them fresh water everyday? Vacuum floor once or twice a day. Main cage cleaning once week. Fresh water as needed...budgies foul water pretty fast even with using drinkers. Seed on their beak goes into the water as they drink it and sours the water in no time flat. How long would you have to spend with your birds on a daily or weekly basis having that many birds? Half hour in the mornings.....especially to check nests with chicks, checking food and water. One hour in the evenings...checking nestboxes, breeding cages, restocking food and water, vacuuming floor. Sometimes checking through the day also as I work from home How have you gone at the shows? Won many awards? What type of birds are you aiming to breed, or currently breeding?
  23. Great idea with the door.Do you have any pics of how your cabinets are set up?Do you use the same boxes as Kaz with the sliding back?DId you use a hook, to hook on the boxes? Where on the box did you put the hook? I do the same as MB From what i can see in the pictures, it looks like the frames for your cabinets are solid. is this correct?Mine are hollow just the frame.Where do you screen your hooks into the boxes? How far up do you have the dowel from the bottom of the door? Trying to make sure i put the hooks in the right area on the box. Shall be doing that tomorrow, so hopefully shall have eggs next week.
  24. Yes...mine like endive Maybe you were feeding lettuce which has a high water content and little nutritional value. Also the greens must be fresh and not slimy or old. I doubt your birds died due to being fed greens. There would have been other issues involved...maybe even pesticides on the greens ? they got sick during a period when i had a friend feeding them. when i came back they didnt look well and i lost a few. i think the person feeding the birds was giving them to much greens, not washing it properly and just leaving it on the concrete and not picking it up. I only leave the greens with the birds for an hour and whatever is excess i pick up and throw in the bin, as i like to ensure they are eating quality and not something that could have been lying around for hours.
  25. Have you found any useful tips over the years of breeding? Do you put your birds in the cages with the breeding boxes straight away? Do you take the doors off when you hang the breeding boxes off the side? if not how do you keep the door up?
