I just phoned the shop and the bar spacing is 1.5cm, which would be too big, wouldn't it? They said it would be perfect for budgies, which makes me think they just want to get rid of it. If they're going to treat me like that, then I'll take my custom elsewhere.

Thats a good idea Its at our local pet shop, so I'll definitely post a picture of it before buying it. I also want to re-check the spacing again. I don't think it was above 1/2 an inch but it was up there. I assume from Kaz's post it is probably designed for a slightly larger bird. There are slightly cheaper cages in town, but though I should support our local store. Cheers

I've read the info in the FAQs about cages and I think I've found the right cage for us. It ticks all of the boxes as far as your recommendations, good size (about 60x45x45-ish) flat roof, black bars, right bar spacing, has its own stand, perches from front to back and it also looks well made, but it has an opening roof. Is that going to be suitable/useful. What is the purpose of an opening roof? I like the idea of a play gym on top, will an opening roof affect that?

Go fish, we only buy pressies for the kids and make a family donation with the rest of the money (last year we (my mother brother & sister & families) gave $1000 to my cousin's daughter who is not doing so well with cancer - most rewarding present we've ever given!! Our fingers are crossed we can do it again this year!!) Is christmas still a religous event for you? (as apposed to just another holiday)

Oh what a pity, don't rats make such great pets!! They're almost as responsive and loyal as dogs. I really miss my old rat Ralf, unfortunately my wife has put her foot down and banned me from getting another one. (but me and my sons are still working on her ) I'd definitely say if you were used to rats, then budgies, or love birds as mentioned above, would be the best replacement.

If you just want birds to looks at, we used to have some pretty colourful finches a while back. I would never let them just fly around the house though as I'd never be able to catch them to put them back in the cage. I've only ever been able to do that with parrots & budgies.
