I think it varies, but first thing in the morning seems to be a biggie for play time, and obviously night for rest. I'm not so sure about the rest of the day in between.

We're going away tomorrow for two weeks, and leaving Cosmo with my parents, which should be fine. The problem is that he has had a few stressful things this week and now he's acting unusual. I'm just a bit upset I guess that it had to happen now. Because he was already bound to get stressed by being moved to stay with other people, but he's already being really nervy this week. I think it's mostly happened since we had him out the other day when friends were over... he was enjoying socialising and being part of the action, but then he flew onto the 2 year old's head... and of course the little boy freaked out and pushed him off. We have been trying to keep Cosmo off heads for ages, so hopefully he learned his lesson, but he was a bit traumatised after that. Now he has just been very jittery, like if we put him up near things he flies away, when he would have used to have played with that thing... and I just had to chase him around the room to put him back in his cage and he squawked a lot Such a shame that we have to give him to my mum when he's already stressed. I had spent the morning calming him down and he eventually had a good preen on my finger and had a good head scratch, but then putting him back in the cage he freaked out again. This will probably bring on his moult.. as he has already been moulting heaps of downy feathers lately.
  3. Now, we all know Cosmo is not a nesting little baby anymore. Cosmo sure knows that, and is not usually cuddly. But this one time, when a neck scratch was on offer, he could not resist....
  4. Haha that is so incredibly cute. My friend's canary does a similar thing. Reminds me of a beanbag... just flopped there.
  5. Haha that is really funny and cute. You must have a really good camera for his foot to not look like a blur when scratching.
  6. I wonder what he means by red, too.... like, whether it's a bright red like a king parrot, or if it maybe had a pinkish hue or something? I have to say... I remain skeptical, although I believe you when you say you trust the guy and don't think he's making it up. I just think he's got something mistaken in the whole story.
  7. He is such a cute little fuzzball babyface. I love them at that age Looks perpetually ready for a neck scratch
  8. Aw, this is an old thread but too bad
  9. There is no real reason for my name lol. I have been using it for years on the internet in various places. I think I just made it up because I wanted something that didn't sound too generic, but also didn't give too much away I have a bit of a thing for made up words.
  10. It was a long time ago now, but I had a male for a year once who was extremely tame. Then we got another baby boy, and I think he was young enough that it was no trouble to tame him given that we already had a very tame one. I think they bonded very well with each other, but the old one was still very tame towards us and the new one was plenty tame enough to get out and play with although not seeking out human company particularly. They were both friendly and tame enough that it was a nice balance. I have thought that in future if we find we don't have as much time for Cosmo as we do now we might get him a little boy as a friend and tame him too. But for now we'll just stick with the one and hope we can always give him this much attention! Edit: oh yeah and also talking. The first boy was a big talker, and when the new one came along he talked in words to him, and even learnt some more words (the new one's name), and eventually the new one learned one or two words off the old one. He probably talked a little less eventually, but was still always a talker.
  11. My parents were in the worst hit area. But their aviary is on the veranda that faces north, and the wind came from the south. So the opposite side of their house got smashed up, but the budgies were totally fine! Not so the cat -- she decided to hide in a cupboard right in the room where a window smashed and shards of glass flew and hit into the door of the cupboard she was in. She didn't get hurt, but she was just trembling for an entire day, and wouldn't eat or drink until the following night.
  12. My mum has a violet normal hen who is 11 years old, had quite a lot of babies, and now is so frail that she can't fly or climb very far, but just clings on and on for life... Other violets we've had seemed to live and die all kinds of ages in the same sort of pattern as any other type. So I haven't seen the pattern. I had a similar suspicion about sky spangles for a while though lol
  13. No wonder I'd love to see it when it's grown up. Congrats!

Haha - Cosmo was playing with a paperclip today and started to get really into it like that... and I agree with you - the look on their face when they drop it is priceless

Haha poor Bobby... he was so placid and good-natured, I could do anything to him and he didn't seem to mind.
  16. Seriously looks like two hens to me too.... and then I just assumed the yellow one is a male because sometimes pieds or inos or other interesting types don't go blue. Then everyone else started saying the olive one was male and the yellow one was female and my head almost exploded. I'm very confused now lol.... And no help to your original questoin either

Oh dear.. I am ashamed to say that when I was 12 little, I dressed my budgie in barbie clothes :party0011: Sorry if this was a thread hijack but I thought it was kind of relevant :party0011:
  18. I don't think any birds are rejects, so I found your question a little strange - unless you are talking about breeding birds to show. In that case, they are too small, you would have to breed show type budgies (in which case all your birds are probably rejects ) Seriously though, they're beautiful, and it's up to you if you want to keep them or give them away.
  19. The amazing thing was that 15 minutes later he was already fully dry! It's been a stinker today. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that he oiled his feathers this morning.

  21. For some strange reason, my husband poured himself a glass of water and left for work without drinking any of it. "Hmm, we're in a drought", I thought, "Better not let it go to waste on such a hot day." So I went and flicked a tiny bit at Cosmo. To my surprise, he fluffed up and ran over to the side of the cage where I was! So I flicked a bit more. He continued to fluff up and roll himself all around, so I went a bit overboard with tossing water at him. This was the result: I know I've put wet Cosmo photos up recently.. but he really reminds me of a cockatoo lol
  22. Wow, they're beautiful! Have you wormed them? I don't have any tips on the health unfortunately... I can't believe they took all their birds and left such a beautiful pair behind! How strange. Oh and I agree that you've got one boy one girl.
  23. We had some we handraised because the hen mutilated them. Most of them ended up as untame but relatively normal budgies. One did end up tame, but he was also a very aggressive biter and was unable to have a proper bond with another budgie and somehow, he never actually worked out how to mate properly. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. But others we had which weren't handraised, were a lot tamer even. So I didn't see any difference handraising, and it's a big effort anyway with a lot of risk involved. I'd feel pretty bad taking a chick away from a nest and handraising it if it died, if it was fine with its mother. The only ones we handraised were because they had no alternative - their mother tried to kill them - and a few of them died anyway.
  24. Could he be dilute, or is the camera just really washed out? He looks very different from how I originally thought he looked when I saw the first blurry lot of pics! He and Bluebell would have blue babies.. my very inexperienced guess would be half normal half spangle, and maybe half yellowface half not? Anyone want to correct me lol?
  25. Thank you! It was very close and I must say that the other one that almost won did extremely well too - was such an adorable photo of a cuddly baby crawling into anything snuggly that it can find lol.. so sweet. The background to this picture is that when we started to tame Cosmo, he was still afraid of our hands, so we used a chopstick to teach him step up. It was not long at all before he let us scratch his head with the chopstick. He has always loved a good scratch. We don't use the chopstick anymore, but he still loves a head scratch with our fingers. Here is a video my husband made of the headscratch with the chopstick, not long at all after we got him. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=tvwVzSnpeoE It's the same video I put up before for those of you who have seen it.
