One of the walls (the one facing the outside, obviously lol) is going to be made of mesh. (I've also bought two big UV lights, not sure how useful they'll be but just in case the wall wasn't enough or didn't end up being possible) I'll have to buy a clear plastic shade to put over it though, when there are storms or when winter arrives. By The Way, if anyone knows of a site where I could buy some of those (since the room is about 10ft wide and 12ft high I'd probably need a few) relatively cheaply that would be nice. I know they'll absolutely demolish the trees--having a world of fun with it, no doubt--so I've bought quite a couple and was thinking of rotating them to allow the trees to recover. Camera currently has run out of charge, plus lost the cable so it may take a while. Been taking regular photos with my iPod as the construction continues however, to have a good record of the progress. Also: Thinking of buying some maidenhair fern, and either hanging some basket/pots...or I have another idea but no good way I know of to implement it; I want to have some sort of frame over the roof or part of the roof, where vines or ferns will grow and hang down?

Hmm sounds cool, could you elaborate more on the 'overhanger' idea? (I can't really get a mental picture of it ) You have any ideas if there are any types of moss that is bird-safe? I quickly googled it but couldn't find any... Already bought some eucalyptus trees to actually grow in there! Thanks for those ideas, certainly have given me somethings to think about! Looking forward to anyone's opinions, the more the better.

Is Blueberry Ash a safe tree for budgies? Including branches, leaves, flowers and fruit. Does anyone know if any/all of those above are safe? Thanks!

I'm building an indoor aviary at the moment (actually turning one of the rooms of the house into an aviary). It measures approximately 12ft (tall) by 10ft (wide and deep). We've already done the roof and a bit of one wall, so there's still quite a bit to go. I'm basically looking for any ideas to do with the construction and even things I can add in. There is already the wooden frame and cement as a base, I'm using a sort of AC sheeting for the walls (though they could possibly be chewed, I used them as a wall for another small indoor cage and had no problems in the years I kept budgies in it, also will be covering any and all areas that could be chewed such as the edges). I've already got a tree stump that has been carved at the top, and I'm going to use it as a sort of bird-bath/waterfall. I am going to have it as a planted aviary, as my dream pretty much has always been to have birds in a huge aviary that is as natural as possible, as much as outside in the wild without the predators and illnesses. So growing trees inside, sand for the bottom (cement is underneath)...what else? Any improvements? Thank you, any replies muchly appreciated.
  5. Are they still for sale? Geelong is very far away from where I live..? :s
  6. Okay, Far North Queensland; Atherton Tablelands. http://maps.google.com.au/maps?client=opera&rls=en&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest&q=google+maps+atherton&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x69820a8b0b9eb4c1:0x400eef17f2071a0,Atherton+QLD&gl=au&ei=lNkZT8yyEOS4iQfZuaWgCw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CC4Q8gEwAA For TCBs, am willing to freight if you know how to organise it..
  7. Hi Wanting to purchase a few Texas Clearbody budgies if anyone has any available. Must not be over about 4 years old as I'm planning on breeding them. Please PM me with info. Muchly appreciated.
  8. Thanks! Would love to hear more opinions on why her cere changed so late...But I kind of kicked myself for a stupid question once I looked at that picture. Obviously a hen..:/
  9. They're two Fallows I bought a few months ago. Both are about 1-2 years old...When I got them, both had evenly pink ceres...although one did have a bit of white around the nares, though nothing like a female; it is this one who now does kind of look like a female! Okay so this one I still think is male: And this one..Male or female? I put him/her down to breed with a hen, but all he/she did was sit in the nestbox. Didn't lay, didn't mate with the hen. So either a female or a pretty hopeless male. Looking at that photo, it looks pretty obviously a hen. However, I still would like other opinions..also, for a year or two old, isn't the change a bit late? (I know the age based on their leg rings, look at my last post when I got the birds)
  10. That looks like feather mites to me..
  11. I Jen144 AS KNOWN ON THIS FORUM FROM Queensland STATE OF Australia COUNTRY AGREE TO ALLOW ANY OF MY PHOTOS OF MY BIRDS FROM ANY OF MY POSTS THREADS ON THIS FORUM TO BE COPIED AND TRANSFORMED INTO PAINTINGS/DRAWINGS BY THE FORUM MEMBER KNOWN AS GENERICBLUE AND FOR THESE PICTURES/PAINTINGS TO BE DISPLAYED AS SHE SO CHOOSES DATED 22nd of October OF YEAR 2011
  12. Haha, alright, thanks again!
  13. Thanks Kaz, thanks macka! I'll probably be back soon (once I've found the cord to charge my camera with....) with pics of the two guys. Especially since I'm suspecting the one with only one legring may be female. Got a paler cere than the male and very definite white rings around the nares. No brown or anything, that's why I'm not certain.
  14. Thanks. So the first one is born in 2010, the second in 2011 (or the other way around?). Why the two legrings on one bird? And different colours to what would correspond to 2010 & 2011 in the list?
  15. Hiya all, I've just bought two new--gorgeous Fallow-- English budgies from a petshop. I've already looked through the post about legring colours to determine their age, but I'm confused. One of the two boys has only one legring on his right leg. A very definite purple, with: CDB (then a '10', reading from top to bottom) LW and 3 numbers. I'd have said he'd have been born in 2010, but his legring is purple, which is apparently for 2011? Also, the second bird has two legrings. One on his right leg that is purple like the first bird, with the letters CDB.. then '01' when reading from left to right..since it's sideways, not just one above the other like the previous ring. Then of course the LW 029. On his left leg is a bright blue ring, saying: CDB (then '10', sideways, or '00' with half of a '0' missing because that's where the edge of the ring is. Unlike the previous ring where the '1' was a definite 1, this number just looks like a bent line..like the punctuation at the end of this sentence) LW 021. I hope that wasn't too confusing!! I'd like to know what ages they are, especially since I bought them specifically for breeding and adding the Fallow gene into my flock. Thank you!
  16. The hen was with the fallow, separate from the rest of the flock, for quite a while before she laid eggs. I'm not sure of the exact timing, but definitely much longer than 10 days. Asia has iris rings, plus I thought dutch pied was just another name for Clearflight Pied? (Or Recessive Pied, can't remember which) If not, what IS Dutch Pied then?
  17. Pics I just took. This chick is definitely not a Spangle and definitely some kind of Pied... Asia's mum was a Clearflight Pied so it is possible that Asia is somehow Clearflight Pied and not showing it and passed it onto this chick. OR, both parents could be split for Rec Pied, although as far as I know neither of Asia's parents were Rec Pied or split for it...
  18. Thanks all for the replies! Update: The chick isn't Opaline...however, am I correct in saying that Recessive Pieds can also have white down when they are chicks? If so, that would confirm that the baby is Rec. Pied and would also explain the white down.. If that's all true, now I have to figure out how the parents are both split for Rec. Pied!
  19. Here are photos of the mum and dad. Oh, and the chick is most definitely Pied and not Spangle, as his/her 2 middle tail feathers aren't clear like a Spangle, and his/her right wing pins are also clear, along with the Pied spot behind his/her head. There are no visible signs of either the mum or dad being any kind of Pied or split for it, so that is what has me wondering! (Although the father is a Fallow and his markings are pale enough that he MAY be Clearflight Pied but with no visible pied head spot) picture of the Fallow, plus the other bird is the father of Asia (grandfather of the chicks in question) Another picture of the Fallow, plus a picture of Kestrel (sister of Asia) That is not a pied marking on Asia's front, By The Way, just a feather out of place.
  20. Okay so I paired these two birds together. Asia, a female Light Green Spangle split for blue (her parents; a violet Clearflight Pied Opaline Spangle female and a Dark Green Spangle male, the splits--if any--of the male are unknown except that he is probably not split for blue) and a Skyblue Fallow male (parents unknown, never bred him before so any splits are also unknown) I got two chicks, who are currently 15 and 14 days old. The oldest appears to be a Green Pied (which type I don't know) who is also either Opaline or split for it. The second looks like a normal Blue. I'm just wondering what kind of Pied the first chick is, how that appeared, and also if he/she is Opaline, as you can clearly see the white down in comparison to the grey down of its sibling.
  21. Just got three new budgies and am trying to figure out their mutations. None of them are related, but I haven't seen any of their parents so I don't know what their colours could have been. I'd say...A male skyblue Violet YF2 Spangle (Greywing??) Female Violet (possibly Skyblue DF Violet) YF2 Spangle, also possibly Greywing? And an unknown. A female, YF, definitely Cinnamon according to the markings visible on her head. Also some sort of Pied, but not Recessive (as she has iris rings).. Opinions?
  22. Agree with Elly. Chick is a Dark Green, mum an Olive Green (Opaline, too) and dad is a Light Green.
  23. I've been handfeeding a baby budgie since she was 10 days old due to unfortunate circumstances. She's now 25 days old, developing well (only a few days behind, if that, in feather development to one of my other chicks that had a much better beginning in life) and very active. I've been feeding her every 3-5 hours, except for one longer break during the night where I let her crop empty completely. She isn't showing any signs of dehydration or malnutrition, but I also haven't been keeping track of how much she's been eating at each feeding so when I fed her--her crop was completely empty--this morning I decided to record how much she ate. Her crop was totally full and she didn't want any more once I'd fed her 7ml/cc's of food. Try as I might I can't find exactly how many cc's I should be expecting her to eat and be completely full at so I figured I'd ask here..make sure I'm feeding her enough, often enough. So..7cc's. Is that a good amount for a 23-25 day old budgie chick? Too much or too little?
  24. Agreed, though I believe the first one could be a female? BUT probably both males, definitely the second one is a male.

Congratulations on your new budgies, and welcome!! They appear to both be females, only very young.
