It's not often that I brag about my birds .... but a couple of days ago I was very tempted to take some pics of Mojo, my amazing Recessive Pied cock chick. He's a week off fledging so I decided to postpone it. As is so often the case with the most promising chicks, yesterday Mojo's mum decided she didn't like him any more and attacked him. So he has a big gash above the left cere nostril. :thankyou: Hey ho, so he is now in the hospital cage recovering and I'm crop feeding him every 4-5 hours. I'm using ER formula and a drop of Baytril just in case 'cause of the likelihood of infection. I regularly swab the gash with iodine and anti-sceptic cream. Any way, so here he is - looking a bit worse for wear So my questions are the following - Do you think he is a Feather Duster? I have my suspicions 'cause his feathers look very, very long. What's the best way to clean up the blood on his head?
  2. So sorry about Quilla Liv. :thankyou:
  3. could be full body grey wings what colour are the cheek patches its the only way to tell between clear wing and full bodyed grey wings Cannot be greywings............the flights and tail are far too light. Clearwings are dominant to Dilutes .... don't know if that helps. Unfortunately when Greywing and Clearwing genes get mixed up it's very hard to tell with the added complication of Dilutes ..... it's a nightmare
  4. You can persist and follow Ikon's advice .... personally I don't have any time for egg eaters and they go straight to the Retirement Village :thankyou:
  5. I have had a good look at the initial photos of your set up Marlon and I was wondering what your mortality rate is? Over here in Australia there is a high incidence of psitacocis, canker and megabacteria, to name the main health problems. Which is why we strongly encourage everyone quarantine their new budgies. As a major supplier of budgies/parakeets in the Phillipines I was wondering how inbred your birds are and how often you bring in 'new blood' or what is also referred to as 'outcrosses'. Do you have many cases of feather dusters and Beak and Feather disease? I note that many of your cages are made of wire, how do you go treating your birds for lice and mites? Looking forward to you reply.
  6. Well done GB ~ they look lovely!
  7. Sounds like psitacocis, you will need to do the doxy treatment.
  8. It looks like she is going to have that shaggy feather that is so in vogue!
  9. Some people call them 'love bites' .... it's when they draw blood that I draw the line.
  10. bummer... never mind... Thanks for looking into it for me Thats odd, when I spoke to Peg she seemed to think Renee was a bird bred from Vinci stock. Yes, she thought so but didn't know for sure. I know that she had Manno, Levy, Norm Wheatley, Brett Wood and Lloyd birds but no Vinci birds from the ring codes. And as I said, she couldn't recall the parents.
  11. I spoke with Peg on the week end. She remembered Renee as she bred her herself but unfortunately she couldn't remember her parents at all ....
  12. Related to this, I also found by accident that a bucket half filled with water and a few handfuls of swept up husks etc sprinkled on top makes an excellent mouse trap! Especially if you provide the mice with an easy path to climb into the bucket. Yes Daryl, it was that in mind that prompted me to post this topic. Unfortunately if one of your budgies gets loose you may find you end up with more than husks and the odd mice in your bucket.
  13. You know what really shits me Kaz, is that barely an hour had gone by since I gave them all their soft food and this stupid bird escaped from its cage and nose dived into the bucket which wasn't very close to its cage at all .... in fact I find it incredible that it ended up in the bucket at all considering how many other perching alternatives it had. Ggggggggrrrrrr.
  14. If you put Caesar, who we have established is split INO to an INO hen you will get 50% INO and split INO cock chicks and 50% INO and normal hen chicks.
  15. okay, the INO gene is sex linked. Only the cock birds can be split INO. Hens are either INO or Normals. If you put a split INO cock bird to a Normal hen you will get 50% split INO and Normal cock chicks and 50% INO and Normal hen chicks. So it is quite possible that Caesar's Dad was a Grey SPLIT INO! INO's can mask other domiinant varieties, I have an albino hen who unless paired with an INO chucks Spangle chicks.
  16. So another tale of caution ... I rotate my breeding cabinets quite rapidly and always wash them out before a new pair go down. I use a 'natural' cleaning product that is very effective and non-toxic to my budgies. For some reason I left the bucket in the breeding room last night and forgot to remove it today. So imagine my horror when I just popped into to check on them and saw 2 budgies happily chatting up their caged counter-parts .... yes they were out! I quickly caught them up and returned them to their cabinet only to espy another sitting on the shelf! A quick glance revealed an open cage door. So I caught her up and put her back .... but couldn't for the life of me see where her partner was. Yes, you guessed it, he had committed budgie suicide and was floating in the bucket of water. Actually this is not as unusual as it sounds. Over the summer I lost a couple when the lid of the tree bucket got misaligned and they fell in and drowned. So be careful, open buckets of water are a peril.
  17. Well done Dave! You WILL love it once it's finished - just a little bit to go now - and you're birds will be happier for it! By the way, is that eucalyptus green paint you've used?
  18. You know Matt, it looks uncannily like Fussy Chook's leg .... and that was a tumour that had to be amputated. Here's hoping it's just an infection that can be cured with antibiotics
  19. Congratulations on the roofing Kaz .... and remember you're only going to have to build it once and then it will last foreeeeever!
  20. Oh don't worry Dave, I can safely say I'm Kaz's nemesis at the moment BUT come next year it'll be a different kettle of fish. Though I have a couple that have popped out lately that should give me a fighting chance .... But really the number one novice this year is Gaza who benched some absolute beauties last Sunday. I was supposed to be stewarding with Nubbly and I couldn't help admiring out loud - and then had to banish myself from the proceedings as my comments could have been overheard by the judge ...
  21. So true, I suspect Kaz is holding off showing till next year when these beauties will come into their own!
  22. Liv..........you will find that legring is WABC 345 06 .......WABC being an uncoded ring. Best ask Renee whar she knows of the mothers background, okay, just checked my records and she is one that I inherited from Peg - so sorry cannot help more. Maybe I'll follow this up when I catch up with her.

A BIG shout out to Gaza today who took out Best Novice bird AND Best Reserve Novice bird :hooray: :party0011: :bliss: CONGRATULATIONS :bliss: :party0011: :hooray: also Nubbly5 who took out Best in Variety for Blue ..... and there were OTHERS too but I can't remember WELL DONE
  24. Oh NO! This is a terrible result what with feather dusters and weepy eyes ..... Don't put this pairing together again. And to date I haven't had a feather duster .... mind you Renee only gave me 4 chicks in total but I understand Robby comes from a stud of Feather Dusters.
  25. Oh My God! Blow drier asap Pleeeeease!
